I am returning Dani Lindroos' favor and notifying the Forum that one of our most beloved and respected members, starting with a variant of the flu without a vaccine, has progressed to pneumonia. It's clear from his communications that he is experiencing a potentially dangerous assault and has endured serious suffering. I'm relieved to report that things appear to be coming under control and Dani seems headed out of danger.

I know Forum members will want to show the kind of support for Dani that was shown me, as well as kudos for winning the BIAB contest. Justifiably so.

But, this is also an occasion for triumph. No one can sing this version of Look of Love the way Dani can. He has captured the male Brazilian singing style (think of Astrud Gilberto with a bass voice) and delivers it with total authority. You've never heard a version of Burt Bacharach's classic like this. And, modesty aside, I don't think Dani could have chosen another arranger.

With the exception of RealDrums, instruments constructed entirely from zeroes and ones are played. At least at some point on their way to the BIAB hard drive, a real person played - as opposed to sampled - a real drum.

Vocal:...............Dani

Drums:.............Lewis Nash, Bossa Lewis #196

Aleck Rand plays:

Keyboard:..........Xpand2! Mark 2 soft layers
Guitar:...............Xpand2! Nylon String Acoustic
Strings:.............Xpand2! Big Soft Strings
Fluegelhorn:.......Native Instruments Session Horns Pro
Tenor sax:..........Native Instruments Session Horns Pro
Bass:.................Trilian Bass Module Bass Legends. John Pattitucci's sampled upright bass

.........................The Look of Love

Sensational Dean and Dani

I really liked the discordant use of notes, giving the song an amazing eeriness.

Dani, keep getting better.

Dean, your arrangements never cease to amaze.

Yes, I think one of the best yet.

Floyd,

I had this idea that it was Dani's best ever too, but your agreement certifies it. Just a beautiful compliment. Dani will appreciate your kind words of support as much as I did when it was my time.

Trevor,

You caught it. The "mysterioso" feel and the stretchy changes. Every tune should have a good intro and a good ending. I arrange myopically so what comes to mind in the intro usually sets the mood for the whole tune. This intro popped into my head and it made no sense to shift gears the moment the chorus started.

Dani wrote a whole damn song for me when I got hit, and I don't have nearly his ability as a composer/lyricist. I wanted to repay him in some way so, before all this happened to him, I asked him to name a tune he really loved and we would do a killer version of it. He named Look of Love, and it nearly killed us.

I couldn't get the key right. I couldn't make Dani's vocals work with the piano voicings. We were both getting discouraged. But Dani would not give up even when I wanted to. I kept adding more and more. Horns. A nylon guitar. Strings. More horns. Then, Dani delivered the vocal track. Bam! We had it. And this was so close in time, he may have not been feeling well even while giving unquestionably his best singing performance. It tells you a lot about the guy.

But still a human being, he'll benefit from the support just as I did. Thanks, mate, for delivering that.

Charlie,

Your kindness carefully punctures the screen and hits the heart. Make that two hearts. Dani will appreciate your support as much as I do. He may have already been getting ill when .. well, let me quote from a previous reply to give you the picture:

Dani, This is a sensational vocal. A perfect vehicle for that smooth bass voice of yours. So fight hard to get better. We love having you around here. Dean, this once again shows off your harmonic sensibilities and master class arranging skills. As I have alluded to a few times before , your understanding of theory is so advanced that with a few well placed changes you could turn chopsticks into a full blown concerto. Great Job! Tom

How cool is this!!!! Dani has always reminded me of Bacharach in his writing style. This fits him like a glove. Love the soft, intimate sound of the vocal! And, with Dean, the master of jazz tracks, you knew it would be delicious. Sorry to hear about Dani being under the weather but I'm sure he will emerge stronger than ever. Great stuff guys!!! Take care. Greg

Guenter,

You have a big heart as well as a big talent. I was listening to Fanfare today and really marveled at the way you finessed Ron King's trumpet into the changes. Ron has produced some of the absolute best RealTracks - the guy has such beautifully coherent ideas and you used them to the max.

Dani was the star in more ways than one. I was kind of your opposite on this tune. I couldn't fit Dani's vocals to the changes. It seemed like the harder I tried the worse it got. But he wouldn't give up and somehow in the end I snatched victory from the jaws of defeat (my real expertise has been shown over and over to be the reverse).

Let me thank you for the both of us. We're both lucky guys to have stumbled into this Forum, a humane world unto itself. If only the real world could be so.

Alyn,

I've deduced that you are a medical man but you really had me ... get ready for this ... in "stitches" with your reference to the rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu. I've been in need of a good laugh lately, and you delivered, mate. There was a sobering element there too. Pneumonia, "the old man's friend" doesn't just visit old men. It can kill a younger person just the same. You've had it and your coded description had danger and suffering written all over it. Luckily, it's one thing I've never had. I've never had colds. Why? It could be one of the few benefits of having a deranged immune system - it jumps on them the way Lynn Christie came out of the blocks, on the "b" in bang, not the "g" in bang. Then it jumps up and down all over me.

Dani and I both appreciate and value your support .. and a good laugh.

Tom,

I started out trying to write a decent reply and the size got out of control. So I sent you an email. But I also want to thank you for your kindness and the support you showed me and now Dani. It's so much easier to put into words- lots and lots of them - the story of me and music theory than it is to properly thank a stand-up guy who says something really important in just a few.

There is very little that we could possibly add to what Tom, floyd and many others have said. The song showcases two exceptional artists and reminds us of the love and incredible music that have emerged from this community.

Janice and Bud,

Our version of Look of Love was more than just two old guys doing a tune. It was an act of defiance in the face of adversity, where two old guys showed they are not going to go down easy. You're right about this being a special community. Dani and I are grateful that the two of you are here, and proud to have you as friends and supporters.

Dani,

There used to be this show on TV called "Kojak" starring the Greek-American actor Telly Savalas - I wouldn't be surprised if you've seen episodes on Finnish TV. Being partially of Greek descent myself, I loved everything about this show: It had a great theme, and Kojak was the spitting image of my uncle Theo complete with the Greekness and wiseguy personality. Telly's full name on the show was Theo Kojak. The thing I carried away was what he would say so often to people he saved or helped or just liked. Departing from them, Kojak would say, "Who loves ya, baby?"

So, who loves ya, baby?

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
