I just looked at the forum user list and sorted it in different ways and calculated the following. I just thought it was interesting.

The user list currently contains 24,194 total users.

Of those users, 12,115 have made zero posts and 5,049 have made only one post. So 71% of the registered user population has made either zero or only one post.

Of the 24,194 total users, 21,189 users (87.6%) have not logged into the forum in the past year; of those 21,189 users, 13,958 users (57.5%) have not logged into the forum in the past 5 years; of those 13,958 users, 4,357 users (18%) have not logged into the forum in the past 10 years; and of those 4,357 users, 433 users (1.8%) have not logged into the forum in the past 15 years.

As my dad would tell me, "you can put that in your notebook of useless information".

For what it's worth...

A lot of one-time posters are spammers. Do they still show up in the User List if their one post has been blown away?

I am always amused when someone makes a thoughtful first post and I look over to see they actually registered many years ago. It does make one wonder how many lurkers there are, and if they are all as content as this would seem. I suspect so.

As far as those of us in the upper range of post counts, I see you are only two behind me this month, so I'm simply keeping pace with you by this reply!

So how many active users does that leave after all those subtractions of users not logged in?

And then there are the users who post sometimes for years and then suddenly stop.

Anyone remember some guy called Mac?

WienSam and the lady guitarist from same place Vienna (forget her user name)

Mark from N Ireland who posted for a while a few years ago.

Ruby (forget his full user name) who came on a for a while a few years ago, asked a lot of stuff, bought the audiophile version I believe, great singer of Sinatra stuff, haven't seen him on since.

Gary who was a prolific poster and very helpful guy who helped me a lot at start, believe he has other hobbies now, don't see him on much.

Moohead who usually comes on at Xmas to say hello and his guitarist friend.

Maybe they are all wiser than us, too busy making music to sit around and post on the forum.

I took time a few months ago to do the same thing with the last 100 User Showcase songs. I wondered who was the most popular poster. I omitted contests where multiple songs were posted in the same thread and also omitted PGMusic Posts.

Noel96 was the runaway leader garnering both the most total views of a song and had the highest total number of replies in the comments for a song. I didn't save the statistics but it was an interesting exercise and who knows how the numbers may have changed since then.

Interesting statistics, and a bit of nostalgia too I guess.

Of course, sadly some users are no longer with us, but still remain in the members list.

And yes, Sly Ruby's name was mentioned. I really enjoyed his overwhelming enthusiasm. Certainly a very talented singer. One could sense the anticipation as he saved and saved his pennies. And then just vanished...

Anyway, not so useless information. Interesting in fact. All good.

If they were deleted, they'd really be dead because you couldn't access their posts anymore.

We know of some who were active. But there are probably a lot of forum members who were lurkers/sleepers from the very beginning who are now sleepers in aeternum.

Enjoy your easter festivities.

Why? I don't understand. Factual maybe, but why miserable?

About 2 dozen regular users and a few others.

The people I love are the ones who come in and dredge up a post that's 7 years old and proceed to post an answer to the OP's question like it was asked yesterday. But wait...there's more.... then you have the other folks who then proceed to add their advice to it.

Doesn't any of those folks check the dates on the posts? Yup... this happens in every forum I've ever been involved in.

I'm a bipolar musician and poster - my periods of music inspiration and playing last from 6 months to 2 years - and then I become dormant : )

I hope I give back a little in terms of my open-ended questions some of which result in background or "not explicitly solicited by the post question' - but very useful. Overall, I've taken I think more than I've given - but I am a gratuitous taker - thanks to all who have given to me : )

I would be interested to see a by "category" comparison. My feeling is that the Song Writer portion seems to have become the most popular since it's introduction. Very little talk about arranging, and virtually zero talk about BIAB live, other than the same rehashed topics. Hey maybe it's all been said Lol.

Of course unlike John's info, mine is just a gut feeling with no scientific research to back it up what so ever or as Mac often said, your mileage may vary.

Later,

Hmmm...

I've been having a few checks since this thread started. What is interesting is that there are approximately 3 to 4 times the number of anonymous users online at any one time compared to to registered users.

So this site is getting lots and lots of visits by users who are content to be 'read-only'

Or lots of bots searching!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Actually that doesn't include the search spiders, there's another separate list for them.

I don't think the count is accurate as you can set your profile to "Hide from Who's Online" .. so the number is always skewed

So the number could actually be higher not lower?

in defense of that practice (and the people who perpetuate it...)

Forums serve more functions than that of dispensing timely information. There's also a very significant social aspect to the good ones. Many times when people respond to an old post, they're saying "me too!" or communicating something else about their ideals, preferences or point of view. That sort of information is critical to the bonding that happens when the same people show up in the same forum on a regular basis.

Then there are the technical questions, which tend to be recurring.. so there isn't really a timeliness to them at all. Maybe the original person moved on and solved his problem 3 years ago, but some new user will have the same question tomorrow... so what's the harm in replying to it?

The real head scratchers are the ones that clearly ARE time sensitive, like "I need a copy of blabla song for my gig tomorrow... where can I find it?" Three years later, it is a bit of a moot point.. but hey, maybe other people want to know where they can get songs.

In the end, it's all good. We're just people bumping elbows as we pass through this life... may as well say hello as we walk past...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
