I've never had a problem unzipping the jbridge file with WinZip, so that's kind of weird. You did receive the licensed file from the jbridge folks, correct?

That file comes doubly compressed. The file you receive is a 7z file (created with 7Zip), which then results in a ZIP file (the standard WinZip format). You have do both decompresses to get to the executable installer program.

If WinZip didn't work for you, then you may want to get 7-Zip (which is free). WinZip is not free, but I believe they have a trial period to try it out. 7-Zip should be able to take care of decompressing both the 7z and the zip file.

You can find 7-Zip here.

Yes, thank you jford! I bought it from BIAB. I followed your advice and it went in perfectly. It was the double install that had me "quirked". Now everything is fine. Thanks, JZ

Yes that double compression made me crazy. At the end I had downloaded the JBridge file and decompressed 4 or 5 times. Then I noticed it was double zipped.

I could be wrong, but my guess as to why he does it that way is that a number of email system don't let zip files or executables through. This way, he hides the executable in the first zip, then hides the fact it's a compressed file (to save bandwidth) by compressing it again with 7-zip. No ill intent, just wanting to ensure it gets to you.

That would be my guess, but as I said, I could be wrong.

Just curious John, I see lots of folks talk about having to use Winzip.

I'm on Win 7 both at home and work and any time I receive a .zip file which is a lot (I do taxes), I first copy it to the desktop from the attachment, then right click it, see the menu item "Open With" and click Windows Explorer. No 3rd party unzip program necessary and this has been available for a long time.

Are you aware of this or do you see lots of zipped files that Windows can't open?

The problem, Bob, is that jbridge comes to you as a 7-zip format compressed file. While Windows works fine with standard zip format, it won't decompress a 7-zip file. So you need either Winzip or 7-zip to do that. Once you do that, you get a resulting zip file that you can then compress with Windows, if you want to, but hey, if you've already got Winzip (or 7-zip, which handles zip files also), why not use it.

Win 7 and win 10 handle this file differently. After I used Z-zip to decompress jBridge.zz on My Windows 10 PC, I clicked on the file and Windows automatically unzipped it to the same folder.

On another note, if this helps anyone else; The illustration on Js website shows installing jbridge to C:ProgramFiles/ But, after several frustrating attempts BIAB2016 (from external USB drive) continued to NOT recognize SampleTank 3 VSTi and told me I needed JBridge installed. I eventually re-unzipped jbridge and installed it to my C:ProgramsFiles(x86)folder. And now ST3 Full version works great in BIAB2016.
Don't know if there will be a future conflict having jbridge in both locations though.

You shouldn't have had to specify your installation location at all - jbridge always picked it up for me. I used C:\Program Files back when I was using Windows XP, but when I upgraded to Windows 7 (and 8 and now 10), it knew to install to C:\Program Files(x86). While maybe not clear in the instructions, I suspect J is using C:\Program Files generically, in that 32-bit systems still use that folder name, but when you go to a 64-bit system, it needs to go to C:\Program Files(x86).

Yes, I have not figured out how to make it work (even not when it is "un-zipped"! I see there is a new app on my Win 10 system called jbridge. I clicked on it but nothing happened except a question as to a 64 bit host or 32. I haven't figured out the answer yet. JZ

Is what you clicked on "jbridge" or "jbridger"?

"jbridger" is a stand-alone utility that allows you to "wrap" 32-bit effects for 64-bit hosts and 64-bit effects for 32-bit hosts. You won't need to do this with the PGMusic products, but other products that don't automatically support bridging will let you point to the "bridged" effects and scan them for use in their product.

For use with PGMusic products, you don't have to do anything with jbridge, except load a 64-bit VST or VSTi (jbridge does nothing with DX or DXi's). BIAB/RB will know it is installed and use it automatically. However, if you previously had the 32-bit version of the effect or softsynth already installed, you will need to remove it first from your list of available effects and then load the 64-bit version (you can't have both, since they have the same name).

I believe the documentation has information on using jbridger. But basically, you tell it you have, say, a 32-bit host. You select that and then you point to your 64-bit effects and tell it where you want to save the result. You end up with a new file that "wraps" the effect for the 32-bit host. It works inversely if you have a 64-bit host. But again, you don't need to do this with BIAB or RB.

Whenever I install new VST's or VSTi's, I always designate separate folders for my 32-bit effects and my 64-bit effects. That makes it much easier to manage within the host, as well as with jbridger.

So on my machine, I've got the following folder structure:

d:\AppsData\VST\32-bit\(all my 32-bit VST/VSTi's)
d:\AppsData\VST\64-bit\(all my 64-bit VST/VSTi's)
d:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\32-bit-hosts\(my bridged 64-bit VST/VSTi's for use in 32-bit hosts)
d:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\64-bit-hosts\(my bridged 32-bit VST/VSTi's for use in 64-bit hosts)

So in my 32-bit hosts, I can tell it to look for VST's in:

"d:\AppsData\VST\32-bit;d:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\32-bit hosts"

And in my 64-bit hosts, I can tell it to look for VST's in:

"d:\AppsData\VST\64-bit;d:\AppsData\VST\jbridge\64-bit hosts"

I'm sure that's clear as mud, and again, you don't need to do any of that for the PGMusic applications.

EDIT

John beat me to it (with more info)

END EDIT

Once installed you don't need to run IT, you need to run a 32-BIT program that will CALL it (like BIAB or RB) you don't (should not anyway) need to do more than INSTALL it properly

BIAB/RB will take it form there (it's actually pretty transparent to user) unless you want to mess with JBridge settings

Thanks Larry. I'm not to the point where jbridge works yet. I'm still showing it won't open. It might be because I'm running BIAB off of the "outboard" hardrive! I'll be trying again today. Jz

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
