A search of this question returned no pertinent results, so I'll pose it: is there a way to create a one or two bar drum break as a transition in a song? I'm trying to get a backing track for ZZ Top's La Grange and I want to generate the drum break that transitions from the spare boogie opening section to the hard rock/blues overdriven guitar section.

dkm,

You haven't mentioned which version of BIAB you are using.

If it's a more recent version of the program, and if I'm interpreting your question correctly, the following will probably do what you're after.

Since you've been a forum member longer than I have, I will take this to mean that you know that it's part markers that control drum breaks. To get these to accomplish what you are after, they need to be used in combination with Bar Settings.

Let's say you want the hard rock rhythm to come in at bar 17 and to be introduced by a drum break from that hard rock rhythm in bar 16.

1. Right-click on bar 16 and select Bar settings.

2. Click on the "Realdrums" button I've highlighted below that's found in Bar Settings.

3. Navigate to the drum pattern you want to load.

4. Close the Realdrum picker.

5. Close bar settings.

6. Click on the number 17 (for bar 17) to create a partmarker (blue or green) for bar 17. (This instructs a drum break to occur in bar 16.)

7. Generate and play song.

I haven't tested the above but, in theory, it should do the job.

Regards,
Noel

If I was planning to recreate the drum break in La Grange, or any other song.... for whatever reason.... I'd do it this way.

Use BB to do the music. Leave room in the song form for the break. Use a programmable drum synth to create that fill part. Put it together in a DAW.

You need to get a drum VST that would sound similar to the BB drums or perhaps use the drum synth in the entire drum part of the song.

Trying to get BB or even RB to create Frank Beard's ZZ Top drum fill will be impossible. It will never play that fill. That's why, if you're looking to get it as close as possible to the original, you will need to program it via midi. If you're not looking for perfection and just relatively close is good enough, perhaps BB/RB can generate a fill that will work.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

To get a little more action, you could make you break using a series 1 note bars using F5

I think I would mute the other instruments and put a part marker on each of the one note bars. Varying the part marker might also add interest.

I've generally specified to rest all instruments except drums (e.g. C7.d) over the measures for the drum part, then used a mix of part markers, and sometimes a style change during the drum break.

Not necessarily for this song, but using the "rest" feature, it makes it easy to, for example, bring the bass (or any other instrument) in a couple of beats for everyone else starts back (C7.db).

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
