So here is a new song inspired by the last great song by Robert Dean called Visions of Woodstock. I told Bob that I got all fired up and heard another song in my head right after I finished hearing his song, and I would send him the results. Here it is Bob. https://soundcloud.com/david-snyder-gigs/walking-backwardsI loved your lyrics so much Bob I decided to paste my here like a poetry slam or something. Dang there is some good stuff on this forum. They are also on Soundcloud. Real Tracks underneath. Have fun. David, YES! Love it! This is my kind of song... Such cool lyrics and another tremendous vocal workout - really great stuff. The guitars and instrumentation really stand out and build on each other with some nice separation. I can easily hear Dylan, Petty or Van Morrison doing this one. Thanks again for the very nice comments on my stuff. I'm a big fan. Bob

Wow, I love this!! Have not listened to Bob's yet-coming next (actually, it just started playing-I hear that dream guitar). Yours in very Dylanesque David. Lyrics are somewhat cryptic at times but the message is clear, and I love it! Energy, mix, arrangement are wonderful. Great stuff!!! Take care. Greg

Not one backward step here David. This was pure go forward; you are moving into your slot. Your challenging your own level and enjoying it, because it’s working. I enjoyed everything.

Hi David,
My goodness. It sounds like you really enjoyed putting this one together. The write, the performance and the production abound with enthusiasm. It's been really interesting watching your journey of the forum. One thing that's clear to me is that BIAB/RB has unleashed a whole heap of musical possibilities for you. And you seem to be chasing and catching every one of them.
All the best, Noel

David,
A good write. Neat lyric. Good energy in the delivery and production.
I found myself wishing that you were not "sounding like Dylan". The song is good enough that you should be "sounding like David Snyder".
The guitars sound good. And the vocal is well recorded and sits nicely in the mix. The drums need some definition (maybe just volume). They get buried in the mix at times.

Dylan style and clever but cryptic lyrics..oh yeah, that's in our wheelhouse!
It all works for us....agree with fj in that pulling up the drums would be good. Make that cool rhythm snap.
Great energy and very enjoyable!

Hi David, I think this is my new favorite of yours... I like the energy in it, and the band sounds perfect for the song. It comes across as more than a song, almost an anthem. It's interesting to see you feeding off Bob's energy. It had never occurred to me before, but now I see a real similarity of style between you two and I think you share the same core philosophy of what good music should be made of. I heard TANGLED UP IN BLUE all through this, but I think floyd makes a good point when he says that you should sound like David Snyder more than like Bob Dylan. Having said that, I think it's impossible to sound like somebody else entirely... so if you are comfortable with some of Dylan's vocal style, spin it a bit to make it your own. Or not.. I'm just kicking ideas around, not giving advice. I thought the lyrics to this were quite good. A few lines that stood out to me were: Greasy hair and diamond rings Tells me things I need to know I say tell me something devil Something don’t feel right Your music sounds like gunfire And it’s drowning out the night The lyrics remind me of something Paul Simon might have written. Anyway, I enjoyed the listen and I'm happy to see forum members inspiring one another! Let's hope that trend continues!

Hey Floyd, Thanks man. Drums are an easy fix. Hard to get all that right the first time without other ears. Glad I have you guys!! With regard to vocals, I just sang this raw with no filters, so I would have to think about how I would approach it otherwise. But I will think about it!

Thanks Pat, as mentioned to Floyd, I just sang this raw with no filters and have no idea what I would do on a retake, but I will definitely give it some thought.
Re: the inspiration. I have to say I get A LOT of inspiration from this forum because people are writing real stuff, and there are a lot of people writing from their guts. Bob is one example, but there are plenty more on this forum. When I hear raw authenticity, it always ignites another song in me so this forum is great for that.
I also am appreciative of the feedback, I trust it more than commercial feedback because people just seem open and genuine and tell you what they think, and there is no hidden agenda or freaky competitiveness going on. That makes me trust it more.
One final note about lyrics:
When I was younger I got to spend the better part of an evening sitting on top of a burned out Pinto in an abandoned parking lot with a young Micahel Stipe, right after R.E.M. had formed. He told me something to the effect that "if the lyrics make too much sense it's not rock and roll."
According to Michael, and I am paraphrasing, COUNTRY is literal (I walked down to the store today at noon in Memphis) but rock and roll is supposed to be more obscure, and is supposed to resonate in the subconscious. In great rock and roll, he postulated, every listener takes the lyric and hears it in an entirely different way and makes it their own secret story. Or that was the gist of it.
I think I tend to agree with him.
And I am looking forward to a lot more inspiration from this great forum. Thanks!

Really liked Bob's song, really like this one! man, you pack a lot into the 3:48 or whatever length of the song. Love the explaination of the difference between Rock and Country lyrics. Great images in there in these words. Cool song.

David,
Enjoy hearing different sides of you. This is like Dylan meets the Boss. I enjoyed the story and the raw emotion. Not trying to analyze it - just listening as a listener and you made me believe what the singer was singing. I thought you did a great job on the song.
(Sorry, I didn't read through all this thread - not much time on here tonight.)

Hello David,
As Bob says you can hear Dylan's and Tom Petty's style in this one. I like the arpeggiated guitar in background.
Nice lyrics. Very well sung (singing angry) very suitable to the style Sergio

Can’t say much more or better than what was already said, the mix, the lyric, the Dylanisk vocal and poetry like lyrics …love it.
About your comments about lyrics; I have a friend who worked with many rock groups as a publisher, producer or manager. He has walls full of platinum and gold RIAA certified records…anyway he pretty much gave me the same advice about rock lyrics. Hearing that you had the same advice from a young John Michael Stipe is a nice reminder and conformation to guide me writing for that genre of music. Thanks for sharing your story.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
