Dear all,

This is my entry in the Xtra Styles competition recently announced by PG Music.

It occurred to me that there may well be users who only visit this forum and who could be interested in the side of BIAB that I've used in this work's creation. It is for those users that I post this link here.

Background
I really enjoy arranging melodies using the contrapuntal techniques of the Baroque and pre-Baroque periods of music. For this reason, when PG Music announced the 'Xtra Styles' competition, I thought it would be an interesting personal challenge to write an instrumental duet and to use BIAB as the 'continuo' that supports the underlying harmony. (In Baroque music, the harpischord, clavichord or organ often fulfilled the role of continuo.)

With the above in mind, I grabbed a duet that I started a few years ago but had not completed and began working from there.

I have never done anything like this with BIAB before. At the end of the process, I am incredibly impressed with the software and just how very versatile it is.

I hope you enjoy my version of "Oh! Susanna". It's probably best described as 'counterpoint meets Stephen Foster meets Band In A Box'.

That is wonderful, Noel. A terrific listen.

One of those pieces that flows effortlessly on the ears, but when one ponders it, would seem that much effort went in to making it seem so effortless....

Great mix! Really enjoyed that.

This is great, Noel! My training was classical (many years ago!), and I have always loved the baroque/counterpoint type of arrangements. You did a great job with this! Very impressive.

Noël,

What a lovely version of Oh Sussanna!
It reminds me of medieval songs and images like this one:

I could even imagine one of the girls might be Sussanna.
Great music!

Thanks floyd. Appreciate the visit and comments. I used to write/arrange heaps of instrumentals. Then BIAB came along and my direction changed.

I've read a few books on the subject and the principles of counterpoint are easy to understand (at least with two voices). Getting an arrangement together, though, takes a bit of time. It's a jigsaw puzzle in a way. At the end of the day, if you get the right bits into the right places, the end result works. After learning the basics of counterpoint, I came to have a whole new appreciation of the brilliance of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi.

Thanks again for the visit and comments.

Wow!

Brilliant idea and execution. After listening we went on a net journey to learn about the origins of the baroque style. Fascinating as we only had very peripheral awareness of the style.

We remain technically clueless smile but that mercifully doesn't prevent us from immensely enjoying a production like this!

Hi Steve,

It's great to see you again. Yep... counterpoint can work really well when in the hands of people like Bach. I have a LONG way to go, yet. Two of my favourite Bach works...

Air On A G String

Sheep May Safely Graze

Hope you have a great day!

Hi Anne-Marie,

It's good to see you! Believe it or not, when I was putting this piece together I thought of you and your wonderful vocal work with counterpoint. Some of the harmonies I've heard from you have been very impressive!

Thank you for visiting. I really appreciate it.

All the best,
Noel

P.S. Love the picture! That says so much about the Baroque period. Maybe Susanna is the flautist smile

Hey J&B!

Good to see you. Thanks for the comments! Appreciate them.

Baroque is an interesting period of music. The link below is to Beethoven. Even though he's from the Classical period of music, a couple hundred years later, this piece is very heavily loaded with two part counterpoint (mezzo soprano and soprano).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3eKhjkdzYY

When counterpoint is in progress, it's possible to hear two (or more) distinct melodies and one can concentrate and isolate each individual melody when listening. The above highlights this very well.

Harmony, on the other hand, provides aural texture. This occurs when the full choir sing in the above. When this happens it's no longer possible to isolate individual melodies because all notes are dependent on one another and create a single chordal sound.

Noel

Hey Mario,

Good to see you. As you show us time and time again, all that limits any of us with BIAB is our imagination! I don't know why I've never tried doing something like this before.... I think my own imagination drives in the ultra-slow lane.

Thanks for listening.

Noel,
Now that set my mind remembering!! I have a solid classical piano upbringing, from years back, up to Grade 6 Royal Academy of Music Theory and Practical and the use of BIAB as the continuo was initially disturbing but very soon grew on me.

Well done!

Alyn

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
