Bud & Janice,
David got in good an early with "Superb, genuine, rootsy sound and great vocals".
A lovely tribute and a great story - told in a way that sounds like second nature to (y'all?). You're experience in this genre shines through - the instrumentals were excellent and the production and write is great, and sounds like everyone was in the room. It's a great piece of storytelling.
The bass player really knows his stuff!!(nicely recorded). Janice of course, is as ever lovely to listen to.
Brilliant.
Peter
Thanks Peter. We really do appreciate your comments. I'm excited that the concept worked for you. Regarding my bass - you are way too kind. I could barely tune those old nylon wrapped gut strings and the room filled with noise every time I hit an open string. It's a long ways from when I used to play walking bass on steel strings! Now it can stand in the room corner for another decade.

Janice & Bud...
It is no surprise how good this is. Everything you do is done to perfection - and nothing more so than when you return to your roots.
The production, arrangement and mix are impeccable. No one does details better than "Bud Merritt - Producer/Arranger/Mix Engineer".
It has gotten to the point that Janice's pitch-perfect vocals are taken for granted... and yet, must be applauded with each new performance.
An excellent write. The attention to detail worming it's way into that aspect as well...
Great bass!!! What a cool thing to be able to add...
Standing O. An achievement.

Great work. Everything is all right but I mostly like the bass line.
Always great songs by you.
Sergio
Nice of to say that Sergio. The strings were dead and I hadn't played in years but it was a very simple track. Thanks! J&B Janice and Bud
Hey, just how good is this, eh?
Every part has been masterfully put together, delivering absolutely a great hospitality country feel.
Take a bow y'all. What a great story, what a great tribute. May Clint's Mandolin play for a long time yet. Thank you for the very kind comments! I'm looking at it as I type and I can hear the ancient tones. J&B

What a super job you guys did here! This really sounds like a real band playing! The banjo is arranged perfectly with a nice spacious sound. Terrific vocals and terrific mix all over, as always ;-)

Hey Janice and Bud I hope you're not surprised to learn I love this track. Really nice song and mix and I'm deeply jealous of having Janice to do the vocal.
Your technique with the faders is the same as I've been doing with my bluegrassy tracks. There's nothing quite like the vibe of acoustic musicians stepping up to and from a single, sweet condensor mic, is there? It's good to see this kind of performance making a comeback. Thanks! We had hoped you would like it. Del McCoury has used this mic technique for years and they sound amazing on stage. We were on a festival bill that they headlined and the sound man, as he should, just got the mics as hot as possible and left them alone. I used to dread a sound man who tried to mix us. Just leave it alone and we'll do the mixing! Pardon the rant and thanks again for the nice comments. J&B

Hello, Janice & Bud
Beautiful tribute to your stepfather! As Greg said, I also love the early recording at the opening. I feel I learn the roots of your music a little. The photo on SoundCloud is very nice. Flat Mandolins are rare in Japan. Very interesting. Janice's heartfelt vocal reached my mind deeply. Very enjoyable listen.
Best Regards.

Great song! Talk about a perfect feel. I love it! I am tempted to run a few eq filters on it and add some vinyl clicks and pops to make it sound like the time I see in my head it's from. It wouldn't sound as great as you've done, but would make it feel authentic to me. If that makes ANY sense at all? GREAT JOB! Thank you! I thought about using the effects I used on the prelude throughout the song but decided to go with the contrast. Since it's all set up in the DAW I may see what it sounds like throughout the track by going from a 30's vinyl sound to a 60's maybe. BTW, the scratches and dust noise were from Izotope's Vinyl plugin and the end of the record clicks were a loop I found on the net. Thanks for listening and commenting. We appreciate it. J&B

J&B, Old school greatness here!! You have done an incredibly good job of capturing the sound you were going for. And yes, you are right on about the subtle ways that a mix can be enhanced by remembering to mute the rhythm of an instrument when a lead is playing. This made me think of my grandparents who were lifelong farmers. Thanks, Torrey Bringing thoughts of your grandparents is what this is all about. We appreciate you saying that. We are also excited that you felt the mix worked toward our goal. Thank you very much! J&B

J&B,
This is delightful! A great tribute to the real origin of Bluegrass. And now, Clint's Mandolin is famous!
Merry Christmas!
Regards,
Bob Thanks Bob. A lot of good pre-bluegrass music was made in the 1930's, particularly with some brothers duets, before Bill Monroe hired a certain banjo player and took it all to a new and great place in 1946.

This is the one of the best mixes I've heard on here. It's sparkling and smooth as butter. You deftly captured the fluid authentic flow of the arrangement in the mix. Bud playing that great sounding bass! Janice's beautiful voice. An outstanding production and heartfelt tribute to your stepfather. Wow! Thanks for saying that. It's been a while since we've done any bluegrass/acoustic roots productions and it's great that it worked for you. We appreciate it! J&B

Janice and Bud, What can I say? A great tribute and what a wonderful way to start this masterpiece.
That bass player knows his stuff, nicely recorded. Vocals, as usual, are above excellent from Janice.
Great stuff, really enjoyed
Hope you both have a good Christmas
Alyn

J&B, I really enjoyed your tribute. The intro is like like a few seconds of time travel...left me wanting more of that old recording. The song is beautifully recorded and has that " real" feel that I only hear in the most authentic country artists today ( Iris Dement comes to mind).
Well done!
Robert Saying it has the real feel means we accomplished our goal...thank you! J&B

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
