In general, using computer based sounds/synths what is an acceptable MS latency number whether using BIAB live or other software.
I'm trying to understand how different musicians play live with kb and programs like kontakt . From previous discussions, latency has been a major stumbling block for soom, even with asio and a current kb
What am I missing or is there no issue and I'm just not up to speed on how to put a package together.
Thanks Wyndham

I'm not sure about live but I'll bet it is similar to recording latency. That is under 15 MS is OK for most people but for a few it should be under 10 MS.

Latency should not be a problem with native ASIO if it is set up properly.

Thanks live or recording would be the same performance issues. do you hear any delay at 15ms?

I do not hear any latency at 15 MS. I set my Roland Octa-Capture to the lowest setting I can without hearing any drop outs. It is normally set at 5.8 MS, however sometimes I have to increase it if I have a big load on it. If I'm playing back a lot of tracks and a lot of effects on those tracks then sometimes I have to increase the buffers, but as I am not recording during this stage it has no effect on latency.

I hope this helps.

I do. I set up my latency (buffer etc) to try to get under 7-10mS. Longer than that and it messes with my brain. If I find a plugin that can't tolerate that low of latency while I record, I give up on that plugin. Never performed out using plugins.

Are these CPU or RAM issues or both? RAM is relatively cheap nowadays. Just wondering.

The answer is maybe, maybe and maybe, Here is an article describing 5 causes of latency and how to fix them:

Many times, neither of them.

Maybe something interrupting the system, stealing the driver, or a driver that just doesn't work in your system.

For me, the Delta 1010 driver in it's last creation doesn't work for me when it does for others. I had to revert back one version to find joy.

.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I'm going to have to test myself. I have been running at 5.8 MS so long that maybe I forgot at what MS I hear latency. I do believe that 15 MS is the rule of thumb though.

Wyndham, rockstar not brings up a very important point in that you should never perform out using plugins. Look ahead plugins like compressors, limiters, etc wil cause latency. In fact if I have some of those effects on tracks and the decide to record another track I have to turn off all of my plugins to stop latency.

Guess I'm lucky with my simple set up. I use a Focusrite Scarlett USB interface for one or two mics running into Logic Pro X on my iMac. Often times I'll have 2-3 effects on each track running separate instances of each one. On rare occasions we experience a latency issue but a couple of tweaks to a Logic specific latency screen always fixes it. I'm running 20g RAM so perhaps that helps. Dunno. Above my pay grade. smile

The drunker your audience, the less they will notice.

But generally, 10ms is what you should be looking for. Sound travels about 1 foot per millisecond, so that's about what you get on stage with a live band.... it could be more but generally 10ms is acceptable.

Our band had some wireless gear and we soon learned that there are practical limits to how far out front you need to go. (unless you are using IEMs)

A good ASIO setup should net you under 10ms without any issues.

You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I'd forgotten the 1ft/ms, glad you mentioned it.
thanks

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
