Happy Saturday!

I'm familiar with using the transposing feature, but today created a prob.

I was (want to be) in Em. Everything was fine. I was searching for a new chord for a progression of 4 bars starting at Gmaj and ending at a Gxxxx (the unknown chord, at that time...I think I have it now, G11(omit 5)).

I transposed the song into G, just to see if I could find it, knowing I could simply un-transpose back to Em.

Though I did and do reset to Em, the song no longer transposes to Em. It transposes to F#m. I re-gen'd, closed/reopened BIAB, etc. If I set transpose to "Dm," the whole song transposes to Em, which is fine, but I can't find what I did wrong. I've visited Help, searched here, checked Preferences/Transpose. The Transpose cell still shows "Dm", but like I said it is playing in Em.

Help?

Hi Andy,

I wonder if the problem arose because you might have clicked on the wrong column in the transposition options?

The column on the right will only change the key signature and not transpose chords or melody. (See the upper image below.)

Another possibility is that you might have accidentally activated visual transpose. (See the lower image.)

Also, a note on musical theory.... even though BIAB seems to do it, it's not possible to transpose a song from the major mode to the minor mode. These are two independent musical forms (the equivalent of apples and oranges). What BIAB does is to transpose to the relative major or minor depending on what was initially present. This means that if you started out with an E minor key signature and then transposed to G major (which is the parallel major of E minor), nothing should have happened with the chords. Where the difference lies is that BIAB will use the key signature when determining which instrumental runs to use. (Hope this makes sense.)

How to correct the situation...

If it turns out that the Visual Transpose is not active, you simply need to use the right hand column of the transposing options to set the new key signature. This will only change the key signature and not the chords.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Thank you, Noel. I will check into it. I'm sure it's operator error, my forte'. I did use/check the left column on the former attachment, but haven't seen the latter before. Things are a little wonkier when I use my laptop, which I was, rather than my desktop, which I am now, with two large monitors, much easier to control things.

Thank you for your help and time, Noel. Greatly appreciated.

Worked great, Noel. I set the left column on Cm, which changed my key to Em (my desired key), then corrected the visual key to Em in the right column.

Thanks a bunch!

Edit: Oops. I spoke too soon. Though everything visually appeared Em, it played F.

No worries though, live an learn. Setting the upper key cell to Cm, adjusts the playing to Em, and all the cells in the bars are based on Em, which is fine.

Don't worry about it. If I run into the problem again, I'll ask tech to suggest a correction.

Again, thank you, Noel. You are ALWAYS quick to fix things for me or at a minimum make knowledgeable suggestions.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
