The Beatles used the 3 chord a lot in their early songs. You might say that they introduced it into the rock vocab. Of course they also used a lot of non-diatonic changes too ... like b6 (essentially as a sub for 4 minor), b2 resolving to 1, 3 major where you would expect 3 to be minor...
