Dear "cubanpete"...

You hope we like it??? You hope??? Man, that's like me asking you if you enjoy making music!

My mother was born in Louisiana, my father in Arkansas. Your blues conjures up images of times, places, and people I still remember from trips I took to their birthplaces as a child more than forty years ago: of backyard dogs barking at the blasting horns of mile-long freight trains barreling down the tracks at 2 a.m. through sleepy towns where the nights were as hot as the day...of fishing holes where the water was so muddy that it looked like oil...where every family had a relative that lived right next door, and so on. Yessiree, it's all in there!

This is atmospheric, emotional, gut-wrenching, story-telling blues that sounds like a "live" performance, "cubanpete". I have a feeling that you know how to get exactly what you want out of B-I-A-B, and I'm not talking about only chord changes. I'm talking about the experience of listening to a composition that has a "shape", a beginning, middle, and end. It has that elusive feeling of spontaneity that makes me think it came out of your head (and heart) whole, and not piecemeal, as sometimes happens when a composer (such as myself!) spins the "circle of fifths" wheel searching for "good" chord progressions.

Would you tell us what is the name of the documentary that inspired your composition? I'd like to watch it and listen to the soundtrack so I could determine if it sounds as good as your blues!

Sincerely,

"bluage" (a.k.a. LOREN)

Thanks for sharing cubanpete! I love the atmosphere of this tune. It's the kind of music you can close your eyes and just float away to. The arrangement is impeccable - you should be proud of this one!

Cheers,
Deryk

Wow Bluage or Loren, your comments had blown me away.I really appreciate the non deserved praise from someone whom actually had experience the South such as your self unlike myself who actually had nothing to do with it though inspired by images seen on a documentary. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of a said documentary. I think it was in the History Channel as part of a series. Maybe you can do a search of it. Again, thank you very much.

Dear "cubanpete"...

You're welcome, but I gotta disagree with you, sir, and vehemently, about your self-described reference to the alleged "non-deserved" praise you received. The fact that you composed music that is so illustrative of a musical tradition that is said to have originated in a region of the United States that you say you have no first-hand knowledge of, makes the composition even more impressive.

Why is that? Because to my mind, what was at work within you as you composed "By The Front Porch" was your musical imagination, your soul, and not your literal connection to the customs, culture, and/or geography of the South. If the test of a composer's musical legitimacy was based on him/her being born, raised, and dying in a place where the musical style he/she works in evolved, that musician would be severely and unfairly limited in what they could produce. It would be akin to being told that you couldn't possibly, truly appreciate dining on Creole cuisine because you ain't from New Orleans!

I am utterly convinced that a composer's ability to write music in any genre is absolute, inarguable proof of what I believe is the fact that all of us are a part of each other; genetically, culturally, socially, and in whatever other ways people have interacted with other.

The latest discoveries in the field of DNA research have proven that over the vast span of historical time on this planet, people have physically migrated from one continent to another, have intermarried, then moved on again to another place where they raised their children, who repeated the same pattern and scattered themselves all over the globe, which, to me, means that there ain't no such thing as "pure" music, anywhere. It has all grown out something else that came before it.

As I said above, "true" music that entertains, excites, and moves it listeners comes straight out of the composer's soul, and not their heads.

So, go ahead and say, "Wow!", take your bow, and then write some more music -- right now!

Sincerely,

"bluage" (a.k.a. Loren)

Hey Mike,

Laid back yet energetic ... great combo of sounds. That harmonica really wails! I love the relaxed acoustic guitar ... holds everything together. And the slide is just right. great mix of tracks, production and a great feel. My ears are smiling! Best to you,

Alan & Di

The two of us have spent our entire lives in the deep south. As a small boy I learned to love the blues from going to sleep listening to an all night radio station that played a lot of blues. Our thoughts about the blues are "you either get it or you don't" as it is hard to articulate what is so captivating about it. For us it's just the raw emotion that flows from it.

You did a fine job of capturing the feel and created it with an excellent sounding production.

Kudos!!

Mike

You captured the blues from the very first note.

Sultry, smooth, and a little drizzle of sweat running own someones brow.
