Interesting but...
It's really simple, it's all generational demographics. The current generation sets the standards and buys the majority of the music, the following generation would not be caught dead listening to that old crap and so it goes, on and on...

It's really cool to hear this guys' views and what he's found as he looked in to this. We were having a conversation earlier about how we don't really hear a lot of rock anymore in the top 40s. With rock's disappearance from the charts, I think it has a lot more to do with rock music from the 60s-90s just being so good that people in the 90s and early 2000s are still listening to old rock music from before they were even born. It transcends generations. I don't know a single person that doesn't know and listen to the Beatles, or who doesn't know who Led Zeppelin is.

Mike, good video. One thing that I feel was kind of left out.. You look and base your findings through a prizm of "charts". What I mean is that most "signed" rock musicians are already pop by default. Rock as a genre is anti establishment music by definition. Only very certain people were able to come close to the oracle. The last one, I believe was Kurt Cobain, but even his music is considered to be sub genre. From "classic rock" time there were Doors but I think much of their music came from the guys like Vaughn Monroe. What unites them...they are like unshaped raw nuggets. And it is a rare event that such people get to the top. Most of Rock is played in garages. It is born in dark places So maybe charts just show who got paid more for their music thanks to the labels/advertisement and has absolutely nothing to do with genre with "distorted guitars" P.S. If you put "election" money of some tiny government on the table, that would probably be enough to propell "Rock" back into "top hits" One song goes something like: Rock and roll is dead, but I am not yet... (1982)

Part of this guy’s analysis is terribly flawed, and that is what is defined as rock music over time. The Beatles early hits were way more sweet and non-rock than some who came before. Should they have been considered rock and roll at the time?
You can ask this question all throughout the history of what has been identified as rock and roll.
What results is a whole bunch of stuff that doesn’t sound anything alike.
Would anyone not call AC DC rock and roll? And yet they were definitely not pop.

Distorted guitar is rock? Don't tell Chuck Berry that, or Scotty Moore, or any of the other of the early guitarists. He left out the 50's rock although he did mention it in passing at the end. It all depends on what you call rock.
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Some good discussion happening here - in particular, the term "rock music" has become so loose that it can apply to a large variety of music these days. It's such an old genre at this point, and has been re-invented so many times that it is hard to say. I'd definitely say you can argue that there is rock music without distorted guitar - or even with no guitar whatsoever, which is the case with certain tunes by bands like Supertramp.

The first vid posted by the OP is a decent statistical analysis. This one is a really great explanation about all this: Why Modern Music is so AWFUL This is good. Millennial Whoops? Two guys have written the majority of all pop songs? Detailed analysis of the decline in lyrics? Good stuff. Also very depressing. For past couple of days I tried to find quintessence of my thoughts on this thread. This is what I came up with. "Charts" and "Popularity" of music mostly have to to with generations and peaks/revolutions in genres(including Rock, the theme of this thread) plus technological innovation and of course it takes a very special boy, girl or a team to create a spark and popularize and shape genre.
I am sure, this had been said many, many times before but here it is:
Kids who grew up on first rock / blues /pop of 1940's-50s Took it to the new level in 1960s when they became "ripe". Mainstream got tired & wanted a change, DiScO with good old space Funk (Synth based) come to the playground in 70s. Later, the kids who grew up, listening to 1960's Rock matured and brought numerous Big Hair Rock bands (+Metal etc.) that became super popular late 70s-mid 80s. Then again mainstream started yawning. At the same time R&B and Hip Hop took the stage until about late 1980s...And a new wave of "kids" grew up, the ones that grew up on pop music of 70s, bringing Madonna, Michael Jackson and many others to main stage... Continuing revolving you have mid 1990s "comebacks" of Metallica, Guns&Roses and again "new kids" of 1980's : Kurt Cobain, Cranberries, Green Day etc. And then....Internet knocks on the door... shuffling cards and chocking BMG/MTV/VH1 mafia and clearing landscape for musicians of all walks to get heard. I am sure, in 50 years people will laugh at our "charts" because it takes time for a history to be written.
To put it in one sentence: We popularize the music of our childhood.

Yep, I've said that a gazillion times but this new vid takes it to a whole new and depressing level. Past generations certainly had their divergent tastes but the music was still built upon solid musical foundations and theory. But, past generations did not have the high tech connectivity the current group has.
It's funny we've been talking for years about how the internet and home studios has opened many opportunities for indy artists to get seen and heard. This vid basically throws that idea into the toilet as far as making it in the biz is concerned. Sure, go ahead and throw your latest up on YouTube and have fun. You and about oh, 200 MILLION others. If this guy is correct and it sure sounds like he is, it's worse now than it's ever been. The top of the whole industry is basically controlled by a very few.
We're witnessing the ultimate dumbing down of musical tastes. Luckily, the word majority does not mean everyone, only the largest group. There is still plenty of room for good stuff and we can hope that the majority will grow some taste as they get older.

Well Bob, this is one vivid reason why BIAB has to modernize and bring in new kids and be relevant in the foreseeable future, not only for the realtracks but as a software. Most of programs that are in the wild today are not oriented toward music composition like BIAB with "live" instruments, but for beat making stuff. It is a shame that progress on key "user friendliness" items is so slow.
If you take visual arts, there was quite a stagnation in 1950s... comatose... Then it came back again wildly. I think it is just a sad period in time for music, people will get bored (like they always do) of the mainstream radio music and producers will start scratching their heads again. As history had shown, exiting music is usually born during turbulent times. (not that I am a great fan of turbulence) I believe we will see pendulum swing in other direction during our time.

Musical taste evolves. The dumbing down is subjective. To my ear, I cannot tell the difference between hundreds of doo [*****] songs. Homogeneous chord progressions and harmonies, etc. 60s psychedelic rock? Maybe 20-100 songs survive through to today as standing the test of time. Same is true for the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000’s.
Now, you likely objected to my statement above when I got to ‘your’ decade when you fell in love with music. There are very very few acts whose catalog endures to future generations as popular. The Beatles are one. Journey is another, albeit much smaller success over the decades.
Others? Rock. Not soul or RnB or something else not categorized as rock.
I think it has always been a cyclical and small slice. Pop music has ALWAYS been controlled by a few at the helm; fewer in the past than today.
This is chart and radio discussion, not to be confused with making a living playing someone else’s music in a live setting. That certainly has declined, but that isn’t the premise of the video

Bob, I've never seen that video before. There are some interesting points to consider; but he definitely exaggerates things to make his point seem more credible. The moments that would be "ah ha!" moments for someone who didn't know about music, arranging, mixing, mastering and production would be more like "Yeah, but..." moments for most of us. A quick example would be him talking about compression and sounds getting lost. There are obvious was of doing this so you still hear them. Of course, he doesn't address that. Don't get met wrong. I loves me some dynamics. Things change. They always will. There is no universal music. I'm glad. I like hearing what people do with what's given. 2 of my daughters LOVE one of the bands I'm doing some work with. There are some songs by them I really like. Then there are some that seem like pretty obvious fillers to me. To them though, EVERY song is "the best." I find it painful to sit thru some of them. I try to find what I CAN like about the song. It doesn't always happen. I don't say much negative though. I really would like for the to like the music they like...then look for opportunities to expose them to more. We trade off and I get to listen to songs I like as well. Because of this; there is some cross over. They end up liking some of what I play as well. I say this because, it's easy to make a video like this guy did and create separation. Any title that has words like "the TRUTH" and "Awful" is to draw people in who feel that way. To build bridges is much more difficult. I say be open to sharing and be open to actually listening. Just my thoughts.
