Classical music's 'official' number one popularity is something forcefully created by too many 'professionals', usually not-too-musical performers-turned-teachers, surviving in society thanks heavily subsidized schools and institutions.
Thereby creating an 'elite' subculture in society with a strong self belief as seen also in many religions.
The system works in our 'civilization' the same way as a virus does in a sick body, just keep the hosting physical body alive enough so that it can reproduce itself and meanwhile infect other bodies. Once in a time one meets the right doctor who has a cure, and HEY, something new appears on the scene. Remember the Police; all of a sudden it wasn't just a punk band.
Anyway, if you can't survive making a living as professional musician, an option is to teach, thereby creating more disabled 'musicians'. Especially works if you're in pursuit of a lively hood within this classical religion's protective shielded music business.
A kind of similar thing goes 'round in art ... there are so many IMO far better paintings than this Hockney swimming pool recently sold for 90 million dollars. F
I happen to know some of those academic-musicians. Some years back I attend a commencement service for a group of graduating students with BS and advanced music degrees. The keynote presentation was given by the dean of the music college. He made the statement, " Why do we get an academic degree in music? Because that is all we can do!".
After that comment, there was a moment of uncomfortable sighs from the students and family. He then continued, " By that I mean; music is so important in our lives, so loved in our life, so ingrained in our souls, so much a part of who and what we are, that there is simply no other course of action that we can pursue that will bring us joy and fulfillment in life, than to commit to its study and advancement as our life's goal.
After all these years I still think back to that comment. It helps me understand musicians who suffer for their art. I would never recommend to a young student to get a degree in music. Any young adult who asks for or needs a recommendation should not pursue an academic degree in music. They should only pursue this if that is "all they can do".
Fortunately I can make a living doing music and nothing but music. And it's a decent living. I would have been more affluent as an electronics engineer but I am living a happy life, on my own terms, and answering to no corporate machine.
I also know that popularity has more to do with promotion, peer pressure, and the opinions of others than of the intrinsic value of the art.
I look at Jackson Pollock paintings and see no "art" in them, just chance spatters. A house painter's drop cloth is as artful IMHO. Others disagree and have a right to do so. Yet the art 'elite' and the press made his work extremely popular.
I saw a documentary about a woman who bought a painting in a thrift store because it was the ugliest painting she ever saw and gave it to a friend. Someone suggested it could be a Pollock so it was taken to many art critics and art museum curators who said it was a cheap copy, definitely not done by Pollock because it didn't have his style, his artfulness, his greatness. After removing it from the frame and tested by forensic experts it was found on the back was Pollock's fingerprint in the same pigment as one of the paints on the front of the canvas. Now it is gone from worthless to a masterpiece and worth millions.
To me, some classical music symphonies are the absolute height of the art of music. But Nicki Minaj or Kenye West raps are much more popular.
I am ever so grateful to my first Band Director / music teacher in school who taught me how to really listen to music.
One example of the greatness of classical music that can't be understood on first listening or never understood by others:
I played Dvorak's 9th symphony in school in an arrangement for symphonic band. I wore out a vinyl record and tried 4 or 5 interpretations by various conductors on CD. I've heard this piece many hundreds of times.
One day, while listening, I'm in the 4th movement and I realize Dvorak has taken fragments of the main themes from all 4 movements and combined them in one short segment. Half of two themes spliced together make the melody, part of another makes the bass line, and part of another makes the countermelody. And done so slyly that I didn't notice it for hundreds of listenings. This will never happen with a much more popular rap, Nashville, punk, jazz, metal EDM, or other pop recording.
So the quality of art really has not much to do with the popularity of that art. But I am thankful that some of those who coudn't or didn't want to make a living performing dedicated their careers to teaching. I don't know if I would have really learned how to listen if it wasn't for Robert C Monroe (than's Bob).

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
