Well....

We've all probably felt we had something from our personal archives that we thought a BIAB resurrection could be a worthy effort.

This one is called "Rose".
Written in August 1974 (Holocene Epoch).
It did need a lyrical massage to improve on continuity/imagery.

I'm waaaay out of my comfort zone here and I don't croon well at all.
(that damn Torrey dude sets the bar pretty high :))

SPECIFICALLY: I'm curious about how the mix translates to other systems because I only have my near fields to mix on....EQ thoughts?....lead vocal volume?

First song on the list: https://soundcloud.com/chulaivet1966

_BRITJON.STY BritBluesInvasion Piano [120 RS]
BritBluesInvasionJohn piano with el.bass, 2 el.guitars, & RockClassicBritEv RealDrums. Upbeat groove reminischent of the blues-infused British Invasion bands of the 60s. (El.Bass, Ac.Piano, El.Guitar, El.Guitar, Drums=RockClassicBritEv^1-TtHt,RdBell)

I'm playing rhythm guitar. (Left channel)

Lyrics:
Verse 1
am dm7 am
I was travelin’ somewhere near LA
Passing through I had no place to stay
em7 dm7 am
Bitter cold, it’s time I find a bed
em7 dm7 am
Road to nowhere, demons in my head

Verse 2
Then I saw you, by chance or destiny
I’m hypnotized, it feels like sorcery
To my surprise, you said “just call me Rose”
“I’m pleased to meet you, can I walk you home”.

Chorus
em7 dm7
There’s sadness in your eyes. (you try to fight it, you just can’t hide)
em7 dm7
You know, it’s not so hard to tell. (you keep runnin’, you can’t stop)
em7 F C Bb am
You can run so long from place to place but you can’t hide from yourself.

Verse 3
Those summer times, the sun shined on your face.
The midnight fires and never ending days.
Love runs wild, a flame that burns so bright
As winds of change begin to show their signs.

Lead break – chorus music only

Verse 4
The Rose is restless At daylight she’ll be gone
and leave no traces or number I can call.
‘I’ll catch you later’…we all know how that goes.
With mixed emotions…I said good bye to Rose.

Chorus

Vamp to end: (you keep runnin’, you can’t stop)

To any that give it a listen...a sincere thanks in advance.

W,
First of all, I like it! Both composition and delivery.
You did pretty damn good job! (loved your comment on Torrey :), so right)
But as with "Looking For a World"... Bring vocals up! In my set up, they are a bit buried in.

Thank you for sharing!

Misha.

Hey Misha.....

OK...I still have a vocal volume aversion.
I will revisit that.

Out of curiosity.....what make of monitors/speaker size are you listening through?
That would be food for thought for me in the future should I live long enough to write another one.

(Chuckle...the Torrey dude is hard act to follow)

Many thanks Misha for the listen, vocal suggestion and favorable comments.

Thank you kindly Ember....love songs are not my genre of confidence so I had to muster up some courage to throw this against the BIAB forum wall.

Much appreciated...

This sounds pretty good to me as is...
I turned the volume way down low & could still clearly hear your vocals.
Good song...
I enjoyed listening to recording.
BTW... If its any consolation...
From my experience all Roses have thorns shocked

Nice simple "Dire Straits" rhythm, great vocals and harmonies - has some end of 70's punk vibe also (Jam). Your guitar and the piano play nicely together, I like the panning. Well known story as well, I like the melancholy wrap-up in the 4th verse.

Howdy Jim and Janne....

Jim.....
Ha...yes...roses have thorns that can't always be avoided. smile
I mix on my 3" Tascam S1010M's at very low volume then go to the KRK Rockit 8's.
But...I've no room for the Rockits now to A/B at volume levels.
Thanks for commenting that you monitored the mix at a low level...that helps.

Janne....
Yes...the music is quite simple and no flash.
I'm a simple guy. smile
Glad you listened for the panning placement as that amount of instrumentation/panning is kind of my preference when putting together the whole song.
Verse 4 was added on the current re-write.
"Catch you later" in this context usually means probably won't see you again but it's a benign goodbye gesture.
Just like when someone tells you....'maybe'....which turns out to mean 'no'. smile

I added the simple chord arrangement to the original post in case anyone was remotely curious.

Thank you both for listening and the kind comments.

Great work on this chulaivet1966, great work on this! Fantastic selection of instruments here and the vibe is very appealing. Really enjoyed the chord progression, very intruging! Well done!

fiddler2007....

I thank you for taking the time to listen and comment.
I'm continually trying to avoid pegging the 'you totally suck' meter. smile

"Hey Joe"...(if you get my drift :))

I'm pleased you found it worth a listen and thanks for the kind comments.
This song writing/recording stuff isn't easy.
If not for BIAB this one would have likely remained in a long forgotten dark closet on my C: drive.

Thanks again to you both....

Man I like your style! This track has some real personality to it and has a lot of interesting ingredients going into the overall sound! Your voice reminds me a lot of Randy Newman for some reason and that's not a bad thing by any means! I think you should bring it up a little in the mix and let it take more of the spotlight. I thought you did a great job with it! As a side note, I saw your comment on me and absolutely cracked up! I showed it to my wife and she laughed bigger than me! She was like, is there someone else on the forum with same name! Now I'm left to ponder the implications of that!! In all seriousness though, You did fine job here with this one!! Thanks, Torrey

Hey Torrey....

I know....Misha said the same thing about the vocals.
I am trying to deal with my aversion to being more bold with the lead vox.
I may require therapy prior to tackling it again. (IE: Crown Royal)

Glad you and the wife got some laughs....even though I was serious.
I thought it could loosen up conversation a bit. smile

I thank you for your very kind comments which are sincerely appreciated.

Carry on....

I had the same "feeling" Torrey had...you sounded like someone I knew, but it slipped me. OF course! Randy Newman.

Nice one-night-stand song that left its mark on the singer. Sounded good to me on the phones, but the vocals could come forward a bit, I think.

Howdy Tangmo...

Well...you're #3 that says vocals are still to low.
I'll revisit and bring it up a bit.

I tried to convey that is was more than a 'one night stand' by adding verse #3.
It was some weeks as how I would perceive their longevity time line.

Thank you very much for listening and commenting....I do appreciate it.

A good eve to all....

Mornin' Kenny....

Many thanks for taking the time to listen and the kind words.
Although I don't know much about ELO over the decades I do like their work and highly respect their level of musicianship.

I just did some refresher googling on ELO:

Video albums: 13
Live albums: 7
Compilation albums: 40
Studio albums: 13
Soundtrack albums: 1

I can't imagine being that prolific and having that body work under my belt.

Thanks again Kenny....much appreciated.
A good weekend to all.

Like Torrey mentioned there is a bit of a Randy Newman feel...and that's cool.

The mix sounds good on our KRK's albeit it a wee bit quiet by today's standards.

Guess all the vocal tweaks had already occurred when we listened as it sounded fine in the mix.

Well done!

Howdy Janice & Bud....

Chuckle...so, you're saying I'm not doing so well at keeping up with the loudness war.

After listening to "On A Dime" you two are also a hard act to follow. smile
We have the same monitors and it's good to know how the mix translates.

Thank you very much for taking the time to listen and comment favorably.

I should've modified my comments to say "perhaps a wee bit quiet by my shot 73 year old ears!"
