Hi Folks.
Came to a roadblock. Last several tunes I made I was importing my midi arranged song, created outside BIAB(through file open) and trying out different RTs/Rds in BIAB to see what works best. Recently I opened a newly made midi arrangement in BIAB and it seems that Realtracks/RDs play different tempo than my midi file....like they are not in sync.
I thought that it is some global issue, but older files (my midi arrangements+Realtracks) play as they should. Is there a setting in BIAB to sync tempo of opened midi file and BIAB content?

Thank you in advance!

Misha.

Misha,

When you import your MIDI file does Band-in-a-Box set the tempo that is embedded in the MIDI file? I bet it does.

My thinking is the issue may be more style selection than tempo. Sometimes it is really difficult to select individual RealTracks to replace MIDI; especially when you're starting from scratch and have a specific sound in mind that you're wanting to obtain. Style includes feel (even/swing) and time signature as well as tempo and instrument selection. Each of these can drastically affect how a particular RealTracks matches the song project. May I suggest an alternative approach?

Try playing your MIDI file in a media player using whatever MIDI sound module the media player natively uses (such as Windows Wavetable GS). Record the media player audio and save the audio as an audio file.

Use the Audio Chord Wizard to import and analyze the audio file. How close does the analysis match your intention? How do the chords, feel, tempo and time signature match you're song? Repeat until the analysis is acceptable. Finish importing into BiaB.

Now select styles that match the imported audio analysis. Any difference in style choices from when you tried with the MIDI file?

Hi Misha

I have just tried this again and it is working as expected.
That is if you open a midi file in BIAB it comes into the melody track all channels play (if multi channel) , and it sets BIAB to the tempo of the midi. It also makes a chord chart based on the midi.
At the same time it disables the style, you can enable the style, and even choose another one but the tempo of the project is still that of the midi file.

I have found that Midi styles are best for this but it does work for Realstyles providing the tempo of the style is within a reasonable range and the feel is suitable.
Cant understand why this has stopped working for you.

Jim,
Thank you for detailed suggestions.
Yes, my midi files have tempo embedded, but it did not give me trouble before. I arranged several tunes in such manner.
I was able to find suitable real tracks or drums to replace or add to the composition.

Mike,
Thank you. Yes, I am paying attention to feel and "suggested" tempo range of RTs.

Here is the thing. If I use same MIDI file and export a Real Track as WAV that are not in sync in BIAB and manually align these MIDI + WAV in DAW, everything playing as it should (in sync).

Ember(of PG) agreed to test it for me., I hope she will have a solution, as this workflow is crucial for me.

If you are using the built in Coyote wavtable synth this is the issue. There is a setting to sync it up.

John,
Thank you., I am using Halion Sonic. If everything fails, I will consider Coyote, but sadly it is not tool of choice.

Just to be clear ..
If you open one of the newer (not working right) files, does the Tempo in BiaB show correctly?

Does the Tempo Percentage (right beside the Tempo in BiaB) show 100% ?
Lastly, is the Time Signature correct?

.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Tempo of my Midi file shows correctly in BIAB. Time signature is correct. Not syncing to Real Drums (or other real stuff for that matter).

If I export same Real Drums track as WAV, it would be in sync to my MIDI file in DAW.

Mystery that I can not solve...

Update....

This issue was driving me absolutely nuts. Finally, I decided to contact tech support. They opened my midi file, and were able to re-create my problem. They will look into it.

Seems that BIAB does not map MIDI correctly in some instances. For example, I believe it trips, if there is a program change before the first note. It sees that program change as a "first" note and maps bars incorrectly. In any case, I am glad they acknowledged the issue and VERY hopeful they will fix this, as most of my midi things are/will have same characteristics.

May not be your problem, but are there multiple tempo changes in the MIDI file or, just a single tempo at the beginning? Remember, BIAB only recognizes tempo changes at the bar level, and it needs to be a whole number (unlike RealBand, which can recognize fractional tempos anywhere in the song). If BIAB is playing the MIDI file with embedded tempo changes, and those changes don't fall on the bar line, I could see how the RealTracks could get out of alignment.

Why not try importing the MIDI file into RealBand, selecting the same RealStyle, and seeing if things line up better there. Just a thought.

John,
thanks for trying. I do not believe it is related to tempo. Realband is a big no-no for me. Believe me, I tried it, several times... Something inside of me screaming "Stay away!". I will figure a way around the issue for now plus I do not want to abandon the ship if it only has a few minor holes in it's hull smile

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
