In the 70s, Roger was at the top of his game with a succession of #1 hits. An envious Nashville songwriter asked him if he wanted a co-writer, to which Roger quipped: "Did Picasso need a co-painter?"

While painting and songwriting are 2 artforms in separate lanes - I do understand what he was trying to say And Roger Miller was certainly a gifted writer.

When I was in junior high, I liked Roger Miller better than the Beatles.

Hey good buddy I think that Roger Miller's best quote was you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd!
I want my last spoken words to be "I hid a million dollars under the........................"

There are countless songwriting teams where the collaboration makes some great music. And there are just as many songwriters who can make great music by themselves. I suspect the prospective songwriter may have wanted to hitch a ride on a sure thing to share royalties. I know when Motown was courting us, they wanted to have a staff writer's name on any songs we wrote, so that Motown can get a share of the songwriter royalties. You know when they own the distribution chain, they make the rules. It's either play by my rules or someone else will gladly take your place. Duke Ellington had Irving Mills' name on quite a few songs in which Mr. Mills had zero input on. But without Irving, we may have never been able to enjoy Duke's music. I read an interview with Otis Blackwell. The interviewer asked Otis if he minded having Elvis Presley's name on some of his songs when Elvis didn't write any of them. Otis said he loved it, because if Elvis sang one, he knew his half the royalties would be bigger than all the royalties if anyone else sang them. Business feeds on business. If I sell a user style disk for BiaB, the shopping cart gets a fee, the credit card authorization company gets a fee, the credit card merchant's account gets a percentage, and after so many deposits, the bank starts getting a fee. Add the monthly flat rates and I have quite a few 'silent partners'. But it would be very difficult to do business without them. I'm not much of a songwriter, so I'd need two songwriting partners. Miller.... what a prolific writer
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I suspect the prospective songwriter may have wanted to hitch a ride on a sure thing to share royalties.
Roger Miller was so well known for spouting memorable quips that could be used as lyrics that a number of Nashville songwriters would go to great lengths to sit next to him in a bar so they could scribble down some of the gems that would spill out of his mouth. Miller’s publisher, Bobby Killeen, once said that everything that came out of Roger’s mouth was a potential song. According to one story that circulated in Nashville, Kris Kristofferson made a comment one evening about having nothing left to lose, to which Roger said, “Nothin’ ain’t worth nothin’; but it’s free”.

People who can spout out great lyrics like that are admired by me. Try as I might, every lyric I've attempted to write has sounded too corny, too contrived, and just too lousy. I can do music OK, but lyrics are just not my forte.
Roger had a nice, natural way of twisting a phrase that worked well in his music. Much of his music appealed to both country and pop markets, and that is not an easy thing to do.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
