Very well put Bob. GM and BiaB go hand in hand and I hope that never changes. However PGMusic could do a little more to make GM sound a little better by using non-quantized backing tracks, much like what they call SuperMidiTracks, which are really just non-quantized tracks.
But as you said to get a more realistic sounding emulation you will need a much better sound source than GM and a little MIDI control knowledge.

I was in the middle of replying when I had the brainstorm to try a Google search about humanizing midi files and voila! This thread came up from 2013. Peter gave a couple of great responses too and Notes Norton who is a master in working with midi has some detailed responses as well. There's a lot of gold nuggets in there and it's one of the best threads ever about this topic. If someone's really interested they should reread this several times until they understand what is being said here. I have to give a little background about Mac. He's a pianist, trumpet player and guitarist. All at a studio session player level. He's also an Electrical Engineer. He suddenly stopped posting with no explanation and is sorely missed. Bob

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
