Wondering if anyone has experienced this problem?

I can load an .xml file into BIAB and it displays and plays correctly. I can make edits, change styles, add bars, etc. But BIAB will not respond to the "Save" or "Save As" command. Even when I try to exit BIAB and it asks if I want to save the file, it won't save it.

Other files save normally.

I'm using BIAB 2018 (520).

Hi Gary,

I don't use XML all that often and this is not a problem that I've experienced on those occasions that I have used this format.

What you are describing, though, sounds like it could be due to a dialogue box which is open behind BIAB's main window. I've sometimes had this happen with Stylepicker and it stops access to a number of functions.

To check this...

1. close all programs except BIAB

2. open BIAB

3. load the XML file

4. try to 'Save As' SGU/MGU file

5. if that doesn't work, press ALT+TAB and have a look at what windows are open

6. if there is a unusual window open, click your mouse on it to either open it, or to close it

Regards,
Noel

Did you pick a style and generate the song before trying to save it?

Noel, I have followed your directions and made sure there are no open windows behind BIAB...still no joy.

Bob, yes, I have picked a style and generated the song. Still no luck in saving it.

I'll also say that this behavior doesn't happen on ALL xml files. Most save normally, so I'm guessing there's something in this particular file (which was exported from EasyABC) that's causing the problem. I usually have better luck importing xml files into BIAB than I do importing abc files.

As I have continued to experiment with this file, I imported the abc file into BIAB and WAS able to save that, so I have a work around...just puzzled as to why the xml file will import perfectly but won't save.

Hi Gary,

I'm not quite following you as to what the problem is.

When I read the above, it sounds like you export EasyABC files as XML and then import those XML files into BIAB, and this is what causes the problem. Is this correct? I don't know much about EasyABC but I had the impression that it didn't export XML (hence my confusion).

Regards,
Noel

Gary, I wonder if you could share the problematic file so that others could trial it and evaluate different ideas?

Gary, I wonder if there is something corrupt in that one file. I would have suggested you email the song to Support, but as you cannot save it, this won't work.

Just to be sure I understand, when you try to Save or Save As and it doesn't work, you are trying to save the song as a BIAB file, correct? [If you wanted to save it as Music XML, you would use the Save Special menu.]

Matt,

You are correct...trying to save it as a BIAB file.

Tired to attach the file here, but I guess only images can be attached to posts. Here's a link to the file in my Dropbox. https://www.dropbox.com/s/v1wh0skgqyzw974/Do%20Lord.xml?dl=0

It's a very simple version of "Do Lord".

Noel,

Yes, EasyABC exports the file as a .musicxml file. After exporting, I simply change the extension to .xml and it will work with BIAB (except for THIS file grin

Just for fun, I imported the problematic xml file into Musescore (worked fine) then exported it again as xml. Same problem when trying to save it in BIAB.

Have you tried to import it to Musescore then have Musescore save it as a mid file? Maybe that will work for you.

Thank you Mario,

Yes, I've tried that and it works, but I only get the melody in BIAB, not the chords. As I mentioned earlier, I was able to successfully import and save it directly from the abc file, which is the shortest work-around, but I like to have a standardized work-flow (I'm a fiddler and import a lot of tunes from EasyABC via xml) and I like to know why things don't work right when they should grin

I hear ya! Sometimes I will spend days trying to figure out why something that is suppose to work doesn't. Crazy isn't it?

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
