Last week my wife unexpectedly was laid off her job of 29 years. We are now in the agonizing process of readjusting our retirement plans. Not looking for any sympathy. It may be the kick that we needed to get on with it and start our next chapter. After all what can you say? Here’s what…..

It’s Gone

Grey clouds move in from the west
Looking for cover it’s probably best
Even in sunlight it’s hard to explain
I always feel the warmth but I always smell the rain

It’s something that we all learn
from an early age
When it’s time to move on
Simply Turn the page

Searching our souls chasing a ghost
Hard to believe it will come to a close
Nothing last forever it is plain to see
That one day we will wake up and suddenly
It’s Gone

pick me up slowly glad you’re around
if you weren’t here I’d likely still be on the ground
It’s hard to know that one of us will someday be alone
We built this house together but it won’t feel like home

It’s something that we all learn
from an early age
When it’s time to move on
Simply Turn the page

Searching our souls chasing a ghost
Hard to believe it will come to a close
Nothing last forever it is plain to see
That one day we will wake up and suddenly
It’s Gone

Searching our souls chasing a ghost
Hard to believe it will come to a close
Nothing last forever it is plain to see
That one day we will wake up and suddenly
It’s Gone

I believe it's the heartfelt songs which come out of personal experience that resonate most deeply with the listener. This is one of those.
I'm grateful I grew up in a military family. We got used to change very early in life and mostly it was an adventure.
Excellent track, tommyad. Enjoyable on many different levels.

Hey, Tom!

It's great to see you here again, I've missed you and your music.

Your stuff is always so good on all levels, so much attention to detail! That guitar lick is the hook that drew me in right from the start.

I'm not even going to start and list all the things I like about this, let's just say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Welcome back!

Tommy, life throws us unexpected curves. Many times it's God's way of telling us to take a different path. I was fired, quite unceremoniously and escorted off the property. Two weeks later, I started my own business. That was 29 years ago. Time to evaluate and move forward..... maybe retire and enjoy the time.

The Song: this is probably right up there in the top 3 songs I've heard from you as far as being my favorites. Of course, Waterline is a high bar to top....

Everything sounded great in this. And the lyric crafting is in fine form as well. Right from the beginning, with that cool signature guitar lick, I knew this was gonna be a good ride. Powerfully written.

A great take on the concept that nothing lasts forever.

Best of luck in the next chapter, Tommy - this is a rock solid tune you have here though. Gorgeous and sincere, and among my favourites from you yet. Your vocals are absolutely stunning. It really showcases your talents for songwriting.

Great driving song, Tommy. Excellent set of lyrics, and they fit perfectly with the background story for the song.

The guitar work is sensational, so are the vocals.

Nice to hear a new song from you. Sorry to hear about your wife's situation, but it clearly has inspired you to write a great Springsteen style song with a strong personal message, yet something for all of us. Melody is powerful, including the guitar riff, and your vocals really heartfelt.

Oh yeah, when its a heart song it stands out so much more!!!!, sorry to hear about your wife Tommy, we are close to retirement also, things are always fluid in this world.

Your vocal is just amazing on this. The Biab is so well put together, this is a classic country masterpiece. I have listened to several today on this forum and now I must say this one stands as good as I have heard!!!! CLiff

It’s been a busy year. I did a complete remodel of the house by myself and continued to work all the while. In addition to that madness we managed several weeks on the road in the Keys and also in the Smoky Mountains. Something had to give with that schedule and it turned out to be music. For me it is like riding a bike and I seem to be able to jump right back into it without much trouble. Thank you for your kind words. Coming from you they are not taken lightly, Tom

"Grey clouds move in from the west
Looking for cover it’s probably best
Even in sunlight it’s hard to explain
I always feel the warmth but I always smell the rain"

What a creative and emotional way to juxtapose
the positive and negative.

You are a master at writing the relatable song and this
one is a great example of that.

And, man, did you ever deliver the lyric with the vocals. Just the right
amount of emotion. Plenty of soul but not angst ridden,

Throw in the always remarkably supportive guitar and fills and the
bar even goes higher. Finalize all that with the band choice and
the production values and WOW!

Sorry an unfortunate life thing caused the muse to drop by but dayum we
as listeners got a real treat!

Tommy,

What a powerful song. Immaculate production and song arrangement.

I'm sorry for the circumstances. Big adjustment to make but may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Super production! Your vocal here reminds me of John Hyatt (I'm a big fan). Great harmonies! Lyrically a great write. And I'm a big fan of how you mix BIAB with your own guitars.

Wonderful song!

Well that's the unadulterated gutwrenching truth - caught the emotion and theme there 100%. Great production. Glad to hear from one of my fav writers/producers on here again. So sorry this happened to your family Tom.

Well, that sucks. frown

Getting fired, not the song.

The song rocks. From the beginning to the end, sounds great. It's got a bit of a Warren Zevon feel. smile

Love the build and then drop at 3:00.

Hi Tom,

It's great to see you back in the forum smile

Wow this is good! You haven't lost your touch at all. The sound is professional, professional, professional.

I love that phrase...

"When it's time to move on
"Simply turn the page"

...it rings with so much truth!

I also like what Sundance said. She nailed it... "Well that's the unadulterated gut-wrenching truth - caught the emotion and theme there 100%."

After 29 years, it would be a shock to the system to be told that time's up. I hope that the negatives from this turn into positives and lead into a fine retirement for you both.

All the best,
Noel

'tommyad'...

Though you expressly rejected receiving it from us, I can't help but sympathize with the plight of your wife and you, 'cause it happened to me, and to how many more??? Thousands? Tens, hundreds of thousands? Millions? These companies, these corporations that employ us, they really got us workin' folks by the you-know-what mad.

Actually, it's not sympathy that your song, It's Gone, evokes -- it's admiration and amazement (from me, at least) that you could get back to your feet after being knocked down by that unwelcome, potentially life-threatening news, filter the experience through your heart and soul, and then compose something like It's Gone that admits to bitterness and cynicism...

..but then again, the fact that you created the song transforms it into the fist you shake in the face of that sudden adversity that has recently dive-bombed its way into you and your wife's life. Thank God for music! "Look here, life, you b*****d!!!", your song says. "You may be trying to bring us down, but at least I can sing about it!!!" Music enables us composers/performers/listeners to grab hold of things we'd much rather ignore, or run away from, and work out our feelings about it, but with the divine assistance of melody and harmony and lyrics at our disposal to smooth out the rough edges.

The sound and the feel of your song is ringing, even while it's wailing somewhere in the key of the 'blues', courtesy of the interplay among the rhythm guitar Real Tracks, and your own performances on electric and acoustic guitars. Your singing voice made me sit up and pay attention -- it's got as much 'presence' and authority as a father telling the bittersweet story of his well-worn life to his respectfully attentive children. That unresolved chord at the end of the song? Abrupt. Dramatic. Like a door being shut in your face.

I wish you and your wife spiritual strength, creativity, flexibility, and as much optimism as both of you can stand as you fasten your ropes around the rocks and climb the next mountain that's been placed in your paths smile.

Thanks for such a wonderful review, Tom

I love this song. Very well put together. I feel your pain, literally. I am the only one who is working in my household, and I am facing major neck surgery!!

Tom,

Very powerful song!
Great vocal and great guitar.
Very emotional.
Nice to hear a new song from you.
Sorry to hear about your wife's situation.
But as Janne says, I also think it clearly has inspired you to write a great Springsteen style song with a strong personal message, yet something for all of us.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi Tom ...

It was so nice to see a new one from you . You are tremendously missed when you're not here.

This is an awesome song! Sorry to hear about your wife's loss of employment. We didn't lose a job, but not that along ago, Di had to start a new medication that costs over $7,000 per month and insurance only covers 70% ... so we write a check the first of each month for just over $2,000.00. That's almost half our monthly income. SO, Di and I can relate to your situation.

But one helluva song came from it. This is one of your very best. The lyric, the b/g trax, the arrangement, the vocal ... what's not to hold in the highest esteem?

Wishing you and yours the very best with hopes of a new journey in which you find all you hope for.

Alan & Di

Wow this is good! You haven't lost your touch at all. The sound is professional, professional, professional.

I love that phrase...

"When it's time to move on
"Simply turn the page"

...it rings with so much truth!

I also like what Sundance said. She nailed it... "Well that's the unadulterated gut-wrenching truth - caught the emotion and theme there 100%."

After 29 years, it would be a shock to the system to be told that time's up. I hope that the negatives from this turn into positives and lead into a fine retirement for you both.

All the best,
Noel

Why is that painful life circumstances make for the best songs? You were certainly able to put it all in a tangible form here Tom! Beautiful work in all aspects! Hoping for the best for you! Thanks, Torrey

Well that kick got you inspired! I really liked this song even though I don't actively listen to Country. It was very well produced and sounded right out of a Nashville studio. It's amazing how such a life altering event can help to produce something so nice! Really like your work here Tom! Keep it up!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
