"Will Somebody Make Me Ask That Girl For A Dance?" (Collaboration w/Floyd Jane)

Style is =AG_CLAP.STY. Texas Boogie, 2 Guitars (Style is natively Real & MIDI)
Key = Gb, Tempo @ 150, Length (m:s) = 3:24

Jodi Proznik on Acoustic bass (#399, Acoustic, Jazz Paul Sw. 140,'4' only) (substitution for the style's original Real Track artist, Dow Tomlin)
Brian Fullen on drums (#007, Nashville Shuffle, RealDrums)
Tom Britt on rhythm electric guitar (#651, Guitar, Electric, Rhythm, Texas Boogie, Sw. 140)
Sandy Willams on rhythm electric guitar (#654, Guitar, Electric, Rhythm, Texas Boogie, Shuffle, Sw. 140)
Jack Pearson on solo electric guitar (#818, Guitar, Electric, Soloist, Country, Classic Swing. Sw. 190)
Tom Keenlyside on solo tenor sax (#716, Sax, Tenor, Soloist, Rock Boogie, Ev. 160, Bluesy)
MIDI acoustic piano

Howdy, all you foot-burners, hoofers, barn dancers, and more laugh ...

This song was composed in 2009, the result of direct inspiration I received after only listening to the demo for the 'Texas Boogie' style I indicated above. That's all it took to get to composin'. It's a perfect example of Band-in-a-Box's ability to get the ol' creative juices flowin'!

Bein' a city bo', myself, at that time I realized that I could not sing the song in the proper vocal style that its 'country' genre/style obviously required. I thought Mr. Floyd Jane would be the ideal candidate to vocalize the lyrics, but it took me ten whole years to get up the nerve to ask him to do it. Well, about two weeks ago I P.M.'d the invitation to him. He accepted it, and the result is posted here:

https://www.soundclick.com/artist/default.cfm?bandID=1321235

Mr. Jane, I've already expressed my deep gratitude to you for saying 'yes', so I won't ruin the mood by overdoing it here, but I just want you to know that I'm ready to do something like this you anytime and anywhere! You're obviously a highly talented songwriter/singer (did I leave anything out???), but now I believe that you're a kind and generous person, too. God bless you, sir!

'rayc', my friend, have at it! That goes for everybody else who cares to listen to it, of course smile !!!

Thanks for listening to our collaboration, people!

LOREN (a.k.a. 'bluage')

VERSE ONE

Will somebody make me ask that girl for a dance?
The last song's playin’ and I won't get another chance
She moves to the music in her own sweet groove
The folks on the dance floor do approve
Will somebody make me ask that girl for a dance?

VERSE TWO

Could that guy dancin’ with her be her man?
‘Cause he could be the road-block in my plan
I ain't that handsome and I'm kind of shy
But I like dancin' 'cause it gets me high
Could that guy dancin’ with her be her man?

BRIDGE (16-BAR ELECTRIC GUITAR SOLO & 16-BAR TENOR SAX SOLO)

VERSE THREE

When I find the nerve to step out on the floor
Gonna dance that girl right out of the door
And she will stay with me forever more!

VERSE FOUR

One day we’ll waltz on down the aisle
Get hitched, have kids and live in style
No other life could ever be worthwhile…

VERSE FIVE
(transposed one semitone up from Gb to G, from here all the way to the end)

Will somebody tell that girl she's got me charmed?
So we can get to hoofin' arm-in-arm
And we'll jump off into a true romance
A pair of plain folk at a country-dance
Will somebody tell that girl she's got me charmed?

VERSE SIX

Will somebody make me ask that girl for a dance?
The last song’s playing and I won't get another chance
She moves to the music in her own sweet groove
The folks on the dance floor do approve
Will somebody make me ask that girl for a dance?

Loren,
This is pretty nifty.
I think the band hangs together well. The sax solo seems a little louder than the guitar solo but that's probably apparent but not real.
THere's some sibilance that's more pronounced earlier on than later.
I think it's a cool performance and song.

Cheers

Loren & Floyd,
This hits all the bases for the style- fun lyrics, upbeat snappy melody, sung with energy by the best country male voice around here, backed up by a good band.
I enjoyed your toe-tapping collaboration... and the intro, revealing the songwriter to be almost as shy to approach the singer as the guy in the song to ask for that dance!

Great lyrics, and floyd jane makes this especially enjoyable to listen to.

But... G♭? Surely you mean F♯! wink

Bouncy fun!

Dear Loren, dear Floyd,

well, I sure wouldn't have expected this one...

What a nice tune, Loren - glad you opened your treasure chest. The lyrics definitely can't hide who wrote them, love them a lot.

A fantastic backing track (what a nice idea to mention the musicians behind those great RealTracks) and I do love the guitar and sax solo a lot.

The whole thing is so toe-tapping and finger-snapping...

Well, and I would neither have expected that collab - hats off, Loren, for finally bracing up and asking Floyd to jump aboard - a very cool decision.

I don't think I remember having heard Floyd singing a jumping thing like that (but I'm still sort of a newbie to the forum...), but that was great and maybe you should consider to throw in an uptempo song once in a while, too, Mr Jane - sure looks good on you.

You see, I am totally avid - if I could I would really like to write this plaudit in Loren style, but who could do that anyway...?

Thank you so much for that treat, guys.

Take good care,

Stefan

Hi, y'all... folks should keep in mind when commenting that this is really "all Loren" (bluage). I am just a hired gun (a cheap one smile ). It is Loren's writing and producing and mixing - and I'm just "along for the ride". (Collaboration seems too strong a word, I think).

He could have easily gotten a more "pure Country" vocal from fiverr (I would guess). It is always a bit strange for me to sing someone else's song - I've spent most of my life just singing my own... and I never really thought I had a "Country voice"... when we were demoing real "hat act" songs, we always hired one of those "pure Country" voices to put it across... it's a bit out of my element...

But, I was happy to lend Loren a hand on this... he has been truly kind to so many folks on this forum... the credit for this goes to him...

Enjoyed this from start to finish.

The BiaB 'team' have really delivered (again)

The Sax solo was especially great. Fitted in so perfectly.

Great job everyone.

Loren

That was a hell of a lot of fun and floyd's vocal was the icing on the cake.

A real toe-tapper nicely put together with a good rockin' band.

Excellent work all round.

Loren this is a very cool tune. The backtrack had me bopping in the chair. Super selection of instruments and cool lyric. That fella singing the tune was to shabby either. Sounds familiar tho ;-). Well done. Love these collaborations...

bluage (and Floyd),

This is a fun, toe-tapping listen—really slick country groove going on here, accentuated with Floyd’s fine vocals, which fit this tune so well. Terrific choice for a vocalist—and great job, Floyd. Some nice choices and touches on the production as well—those wedding bells, and then the decision to up a half step on the last two verses, which resonate coming off the bridge. Excellent tune!

My best to you both,

Deej

Hello, 'rayc'...

Hey, I'm tickled pink that you thought it was a 'pretty nifty' song. Thank you smile !!!

So, on the technical side, I agree that the sax sounds louder than the electric guitar. What could I do about that? And, when you speak of 'sibilance', do you mean that "s-s-s" sound?

Dear 'Robertkc'...

Ha, ha, art mirrors life, eh smile ???

I was happy to read the song got your toes to tappin'. Country swing is s helluva lotta fun to listen to! And, yes, Mr. Floyd Jane's voice was a natural for this song, as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you for taking the time to listen, 'Robertkc'.

Sincerely,

LOREN

Hey, there, 'dcuny'...

Thank for your comments, sir smile !!!

Concerning the F# thing, is there a rule that explains which note to use in cases where a note has an enharmonic equivalent?

I thank you for listening to our collaboration!

'Tunemonger': our resident 'big band' specialist laugh !!!

You're the second listener who commented about the song being 'fun'. Well, that makes me smile smile.

And, the vocalist, Floyd Jane? He took those lyrics and made 'em his...and, I ain't got a problem with that, for certain!

Thank you, 'Tunemonger'

Dear Stefan...

I didn't expect it, either, as you already know I compose mostly jazz, but 'country swing' (as 'Texas Boogie', the Real/MIDI I used) is a close enough cousin, eh? smile.

I'm glad you enojyed it as a 'treat'. It's a nice way of putting it.

Thank you, Stefan!

Floyd Jane really took the lyrics on a ride, for sure!

My dear, humble, Mr. Floyd Jane...

Concerning your comment that "It is always a bit strange for me to sing someone else's song...", that is probably the strongest reason that explains why it took me so long to ask you to collaborate with me. I remember thinking, "This man sings his own songs. He'd probably be insulted if I asked him to do the vocals for my song."

Yep, that's what was on my mind. So, could you imagine my surprise -- no, 'shock' would be more like it -- when you agreed to do it ??? That's exactly why I said in the introduction to my post, "...but now I believe that you're a kind and generous person, too. God bless you, sir!"

It was quite definitely a 'ccollaboration', 'cuz it took your half, to make my half work. Fair 'nough ???

Thank you, again, Mr. Jane.

Most sincerely, and most respectfully,

LOREN (a.k.a. 'bluage')
