My music computer is off-line except for updates and registrations. Thus when it is on-line I check for Win updates. So this computer is always up to date.
My Internet computer is on-line for 12-15 hours a day! I have it automatically update itself. Or at least I thought it was updating itself. Just for fun I clicked on winkey + R, typed in winver, and found out that it was version 1803! What! Windows can turn off my USB ports and rearrange how I have things set up but it can't tell me that it will not update! So I DLed Windows Media Creator and updated to 1909.
I thought that I should pass this on just in case it can help someone else.

The update feature associated with Win 10 is simply horrible. Two nights ago I was giving a presentation via a laptop and projector to large audience (the day job) and in the middle of my slide deck the slides froze! Took a look at the laptop and there was a message "Win 10 would like to perform an update NOW" OK? or Wait till later? I thought best to wait till later.

This is exactly why I turn off my Ethernet card and anti-virus and anti-malware programs while using BiaB and my DAW. I also have had things freeze and/or crash while recording do to Windows doing something in the background.

My stage computers and the main music computer in my office never-ever go online and contain minimal apps. Nothing that doesn't contribute to the making and playing of music is on those computers. No AV, no office, no games, and that makes the machines more stable and quicker.
If anything gets passed from my up-to-date on-line computer it goes through an extra AV scan before copying to move.
The music computers are older versions of my Internet computer passed down as needed. I keep a disk image of the computers when they were new, so I can restore them to their out of the box state before I pass them down.

Anything that passes from my on-line Internet computer to my music computer also gets extra AV and anti-malware scans also. My problem is that a lot of my software now demands on-line activation, sometimes more than once. Thus I need to stay updated on my OS, Defender and anti-malware bytes. Its not like the good ol' days when I could keep my music computer completely off-line.

I don't worry about going offline much anymore. I just have a scheduled task set up to turn off the network card overnight and my PC sits behind the AT&T DSL Modem/Router so I have a little firewall protection there.
I don't seem to run into many problems with Windows Updates. If I get a pop-up that Windows wants to update, I just postpone it if I'm in the middle of something.

My computers sit behind a Netgear router that has a firewall. I keep my music computer off-line most of the time but I just might try disabling the Ethernet card at night on my Internet computer. Thanx for that tip.

Hey Mario,
Here's the commands I put in a .BAT file to turn it off and on:
netsh interface set interface "Ethernet 2" ENABLED netsh interface set interface "Ethernet 2" DISABLED
Your network card may be another name than Ethernet 2.....
Then just create a Scheduled Task to run it every day. For the disable one, I use a sleep command of 5 minutes or so before the DISABLED in case I'm working on the PC and don't want to get knocked off the internet.

Mario, I'm with you on that.
Fortunately my stage computers never-ever have to go on-line. The minimal software I use stays activated.
My studio computer can go online, and I'll do that temporarily if it needs an additional activation but then it's off again. But my music software isn't subscription based, all my synths are hardware units, and I don't have any non-essential music apps on it, I haven't had to go on-line on that computer in years.
I also keep disk images of my computers and I keep older copies, once a month, for over a year. This protects me in case I get infected with one of those malware things that rear their ugly head sometime in the future. The data on my music computer is backed up separately and since it is MIDI, WAV and mp3 files it's resistant to malware.
The best malware protection is the proverbial ounce of prevention. Follow all the safe computing suggestions and minimize your chances. The bad-folks go after the easy targets first unless there is a ton of money to be made by breaking in. I don't have a ton of money for them to get (unfortunately).

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
