YIKES! MY HITACHI 2TB/TO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE HAS FAILED ON ME!! frown And neither my PC nor my laptop recognizes it anymore. frown

The short story. After hearing a constant, and VERY annoying, beep beep beep (which I originally thought was coming from my PC) and being unable to silence it (even after checking YouTube and Google searches for answers), it turned out it wasn't coming from my PC at all but from my Hitachi 2TB/To external hard drive!! frown

One estimate to recover the data (and from a trusted computer "geek") was for $600 and I sort of expected that because I do know what is involved. But nothing wrong with checking for a less expensive place that might be able to recover the data, right? . Okay, so there are a few places online that do it and one (without checking into it too much) was for $299 with a $100 coupon (how that coupon is used I haven't checked into yet) but I will when I get some extra money and REALLY feel the need to recover the stuff.

Anyhow, as of now, there is NO hurry for this but I do have some 359GB of data on it that I don't want to simply forget about.

In the meantime, any suggestions?

TIA

I've bought a couple of these over the past several years. They are very reliable and cheap. I use them for incremental backups of my main PCs media files.

Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB External Hard Drive HDD (STEA2000400)
$54.99

P.S. - The 4TB version is less than $100 too if you want to go big.

Apologies...….. I didn't realize you were looking for a recovery option. I thought you were looking at new drives....

What failed may be the controller, not the drive, especially since you heard the sounds.

Try a hard drive enclosure and mount your questionable drive in that. Cheap fix first. It might work!

If you get hard drives from PG Music, some of them have a removable enclosure you could use for testing.

Can't hurt to try it, thanks. But have to say, that when I brought it to computer "geek" it was no longer beeping but making a sound he knew as FAIL. Like the head (or whatever it's called) seems to be stuck on the disk. I probably never should have stood it upright so it could have easily been knocked over (as it has been more than a few times), should have laid it flat. He did suggest to plug it in now and then just for the hell of it but he was doubtful it'll ever work again. Not just that but the light doesn't even come on when the AC is connected.

But the light is from the controller. Try it.

If by chance it works, don’t turn it off; bring another drive and back it up immediately.

I do know about the heads of course; I taught computer science in college. I used to bring a disassembled IBM drive to class to illustrate.

Good luck!

One "trick" that MIGHT work one time is:

Place the hard drive in a zip lock bag. Remove as much air as you can and close the bag.

Place the bag and hard drive in a freezer. Keep in freezer until frozen solid. (The hard drive components will contract)

Remove the hard drive and bag from the freezer.

Remove the hard drive from the bag, set beside your computer, connect power and cables.

Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the hard drive case as fast as you can.

The quick temperature change may cause the hard drive components to expand and loosen up enough to spin up.

May be an obvious suggestion that you already checked, but have you tried a different power supply to the drive?
If the power supply or adapter is bad the drive wouldn't fire up correctly no matter what machine it was connected to.
You did say it was an external Hitachi HDD, and most of those I've come across had a separate power supply.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

If it's lost data that may be recoverable, I've used Active@ File recovery successfully before

Active@ File Recovery Professional

I've got the professional version, about $45.

The claim is: "Efficient & easy to use recovery tool for deleted or lost files, damaged or re-formatted volumes, even if your PC doesn't boot. Recovery software provides ability to detect and recover files, volumes & disks lost due to deletion, formatting, physical damage, viruses & other..."

This program definitely worked for me. A customer had provided me with a completely failed disk (C: drive) and I managed to recover just about everything.

Once you've exhausted all other methods and have decided to pay a pro try Kroll On-Track.

I used them once before for a business application
Cost me good money (about a grand). I remember I bargained them down about 20% from their initial offer.
But it wasn't cheap.

They recovered ALL the data save one temp file.
More than worth the grand I would have spent to re-create.

I'm sure there are others in the business just as good, perhaps even cheaper
However, I would call OnTrack first if I ever again have that problem.

Good luck

I'd be interested to hear back from the OP on this. Did any of our suggestions work?

I WILL try the suggestions. But I have to say, I am in no hurry to attempt to recover the data now. Not just because a lot of the data on the drive that I want I can simply download again but also because I hate stress. Mainly the former. But there WILL come a time when I want to recover it all. I will do the suggestions then.

No money will be spent on it now (or for MONTHS from now) considering I want to get the Zoom R8 (thankfully American Musical Supply has payment plans), upgrade my BIAB/RealTracks to 2020, purchase the Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone, purchase the Joyo OMB looper/drum machine pedal, have a tall palm tree removed (complaining neighbor) and a few other things which are more a priority to me.

It sucks looking back as I never should have put the drive upright (so it could be knocked over, and WAS a few times!) and, hell, why did I leave it plugged in 24/7 when I rarely used it to back up some stuff? Live and learn.

Anyhow, thanks for everyone's help. I'll get back to this sometime next year.

cheers

P.S. Happy Holidays!!

Understood, other things in the list first. But do come back with an update. I hope it's a good one.

Perhaps you should consider the possibilities of Steve Gibson's SpinRite for $89...
Gibson Research Corporation
https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

I wonder if computer "geek" repair places buy & use his product to make their miracle recoveries grin ...

In addition, he has a lot of other PC information available at his site.
BTW...
It might be a good investment for other PC users...

There's a name from the past. A very good one, though.

I think I still have an old copy of Steve Gibson's SpinRite somewhere in my cache of old software. We were having some issues at work and I ended up communicating with Steve Gibson himself to help solve it.
