I've FINISHED.
I did the stripped versions as I trod water waiting for the master to be prepared...end of year backlog as usual.

A different M.E. - just because a change is as good as a seasonal holiday?
Here it is mastered by my usual chap...

The man who keeps his powder dry
And neither smokes nor drinks
Will have you plead for hard relief
With just the way he thinks.

The narcissist’s wife.
She
She lives alone
Despite his presence in the house
His word
Cuts like a knife
Despite his calm
She
Knows he isn’t
Cut close to the life
Of the narcissist’s wife

His foreplay has been perfected
Scripted blow by blow
Each moan or cry in place
The wife tells friends it’s so.
Each moan or cry
The wife tells friends it’s so

The narcissist’s wife.
She
She lives alone
Despite his presence in the house
Always
Plays the jack-knife
Despite his charm
She
Knows he hasn’t
Cut close to the life
Of the narcissist’s wife

solo

The narcissist’s wife.
She
She lives alone
Despite his presence in the house
His word
Cuts like a knife
Offhanded harm
She
Knows he means it
Cut close to the life
Of the narcissist’s wife

The calm impassive voice
Of a man who wields power
Who knows he can make you
Never to have existed
Within the subsequent hour.
Never to have existed

Cut so keenly close to life
With just the way he thinks

A big sound. It fills the room and wraps all around you. Huge.

I can imagine this being BLASTED from the rooms of several of my college buddies. (There were familiar strong scents emanating from those rooms, as well) smile

Enjoyed...

Ray,
Good deal! As you mentioned, it does sound FINISHED smile
Drums are nice and loud. This tune definitely got character, not an average listen. Cool mix and vibe! I am certain this tune was not an easy one to work on, compliments to you and Stephen!

Ray,

This sounds s-o-o-o-o impressive. The sound is filling my little music studio! It's like I'm sitting in a cinema with dolby all around me and audio everywhere.

I have no idea how to achieve a sound like this but I can certainly sit back and admire it.

Excellent work!

Noel

Altered states between mates in the United States ...
Thanks Floyd,
I added electric 12 string after the last posted full mix. It seems to have helped with the size.

Thanks Misha,
It wasn't too bad to build and mix - working my way through what to leave out was the biggest headache along with managing the distorted guitar after the solo.
All done now.

Nothing like wide panned guitars with a touch of spring reverb. Oh, the added 12 string electric seemed to open things up a tad.
Thanks for your generous assessment.

Thanks Dave,
there's a bit going on becasue I can't tell myself NO when it comes to an idea or brain fart.
I think thinning the mid mud but swapping in the 12 string, (newly acquired cheapie Harley Benton Rickenbacker knock off for AUS$270), was a plus though.

Hi ray,

This song reminded me of a musical (British) stream in the 70th's. Peculiar but also intriguing. It's not easy to hear a recognisable melody in it. The style is a bit psychedelic, but as I wrote; intriguing.
I like the song. The organ was littlebit massive, but I think that that contributes to that psychedilic sphere. Nicely done.
A bit a pitty is the absense of the lyrics. Now I had to guess what was wrong with the narcissists wife, or with the narcist himself.
I have one question about that: can narcists fall in love with someone else? But maybe this was covered in the song...

Hans,
the lyrics have been included, above, for your perusal.
Yes, the organ was intended to ground the song in psychedelia - particular reference for me is a Greek band called Wil'o'the Wisp,( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA2_8_8Q66U ). The organ and the thick fuzz on the guitar after the solo are touchstones for that.
From my reading a narcissist cannot actually fall in love with someone else but they often marry or take a life partner so that they appear "normal" or so they can use the person as they see fit. I only know one narcissist and his partner is, to him, an ornament.

As others have said, the sound on this track is *huge*. It's wide as well. There are several impressive things going on here. I'm wishing I still had my large speakers set up so I could just sit back and let these waves of sound wash over the entire room. You've done an excellent job of making the sounds lush and big, but without losing the resolution and keeping things separated out. On top of all that I really like the psychedelic vibe and the unexpected shift changes in the melody, that just keep it turning and turning. Very reminiscent of some of the best 60's and 70's psychedelic rock. Top notch all around.

EdZ314,
Thank you very much.
Wide is easy...I always pan a matched pair of something at the extremes to establish the soundstage and put the traditional things up the middle as per mixing for vinyl LPs.
The "huge" aspect is another matter.
The psych vibe is, largely, due to the excellent BIAB organ sound, ( rendered to mono so it's easier to pan).
Stephen did a cool job with the melody - it almost meanders, but not too far and the metre really holds the words together.

Stupid me...

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your answer. I completely missed the lyrics while they were in front of me! I will see a doctor for that right away.
And what I asked about the narcissist (In Dutch a narcist) was completely covered by the clever and sensitive made lyrics.

Good mastering done by someone with REALLY good ears always helps a dullard like me.
There's an alternate mastering in the OP.

Ray,
I can hear the difference that 12 string makes... big sound getting wider.
A very impressive production in a style I enjoy; sure there`s a kind of time-stamp on it, but if you were there you`ll understand how well crafted this song is.
Thanks for that tip on rendering the organ to mono for panning btw- I`ll try that.

Thanks Robert,
"...people of a certain age..." is also accurate.
It wasn't until I thought to make the organ mono that I was able to wrangle it into a mix properly. The stereo is usually fabulous to listen to but a mono track with bottom and top end happy together makes mixing and panning way easier.
I quite like the cheapie 12 string.

Whoah, that is loud! I'd be really curious regarding the results if you ran it through:
https://www.loudnesspenalty.com

Might be wrong but I'd guess the streaming platforms would pull it down 6db+ or so.
I've been limiting at 14 LUFS lately and this puppy nearly blew my monitors off the shelf!

The mix is great...actually all is as perhaps the ME remains engaged in the loudness wars smile
And forgive me if I'm reacting only to having listened to mixes I’m prepping for streaming over the last couple of days!

Along with a big ole FWIW from the old guy.

Enjoyed it!

Thanks J&B,
It was mastered for CD.
I didn't request a streamer level copy.
The reduction, according to Penalty, (I was reading about that yesterday), varies from -2.8 to -5 so you were close.
The song file is loud but not mashed at all
Here's a view of it in Waverepair:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4yw16rgik3zqa7d/narc%20wave.png?dl=0
It retains dynamics and a bit of head room. mastered at 24bit as well to allow that scope.
I do know the shock of something loud coming over the monitors and apologize.
Thanks for you comment on the mix

No, no, I didn't mean to imply in any way that it was mashed. The dynamics are obvious in all your mixes. I've been dragged kicking and screaming into this 14 LUFS thing. I finally decided to adopt it after reading Spotify's comments on mastering.

And yes for a CD I think the objective is for the levels of all the tunes to approximate a target -- loud or quite.

Again, I detest stuff for which the waveform looks like a 2x4 board, i.e., squashed. And yours never sound that way.

There is nothing for you to apologize for as I've had my monitors set at a certain volume, comfortable for me, for my remastering some songs...well remastering only in the sense of lowering the loudness.
Guess I'd kinda gotten used to it. We stream everything we listen to in the home, in the vehicle, etc., so I just decided that for our next EP I'd go with the trend and master specifically for the platforms.

Again, FWIW!

I was pleased you mentioned the relative volume because, in this instance, I hadn't checked the master except by ear and I was prompted to do my usual follow ups: look at the waveform, do a freq analysis etc. I've been doing the extra checks because I fear my tinnitus may be masking something.
I was pleased to see the Waverepair image reflected my preferences too.
I chose the M.E. I use because he's quite an experienced musician and producer. He's also renowned for his use of analogue equipment and oddities like Minidisc, (he likes the compression that format uses - prefers tape but is keen to use things that fit the song). Though he's stuck with digital from me. He's also a creative chap and has contacted me with suggestions regarding songs that could be tweaked or augmented in some way. On one track he suggested an Eventide like effect on the snare drum to get an even more Bowie/Hansa sound. He said he'd do the usual mastering at the usual fee and, if I sent him the relevant files, would do the snare thing, mix it in and a separate master for gratis. How could I say no?
I'm still an old fuddy duddy: I don't stream except when using the computer and this forum - though Utub et al are really streamers.
Thanks for the follow up and the deeper explanation. I was, as said, pleased to have been prodded to have a look. I've only had one mashed master so far - & that was from someone different. It seems that, given the prominence of streaming and the audio impact of gain reduction on those sights, the loudness wars ended with a whimper from the bluster side and a pyrrhic victory for the dynamic dudes.

“It seems that, given the prominence of streaming and the audio impact of gain reduction on those sights, the loudness wars ended with a whimper from the bluster side and a pyrrhic victory for the dynamic dudes.“

At the risk of continuing my hijack of your thread I have to say that the above summary is priceless!

And, BTW, I’m a septuagenarian with tinnitus and a profound high end hearing loss. Were it not for a brilliant audiologist we would not be having this chat!

Thanks for the back ground info. I think Spotify drove the final nail in the loudness war coffin with their statements this year on the 14 LUFS levels.

And thanks for sharing the waveform image. Yep, for the genre the dynamics are there and, yep again, it is up there in volume. The cool thing about the newer and some of the older maximizers is how the dynamics can be maintained while increasing the volume to levels never thought possible w/o smashing it. Nothing new there but to a guy who came outa the analog school in the 60’s it’s amazing.

Cheers,

Bud

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
