I usually run BiaB from an external HD on my MacBook Air. I found I had a 256GB PNY SDXC card left over from some old audio equipment and wondered if it would be fast enough to run BiaB.

I was expecting the SD card to be too slow to run well, but hey I had some time to kill so gave it a try.

The simple answer is YES it is fast enough. I installed 2019 UltraPak, along with all Xtra styles packs 1 - 8, loops style Pak 1 and a few extras that came with the upgrade. The SD card runs as far as I can tell as quickly as an external HD does. Loads pretty much as fast as far as I can tell. This is great because I no longer need to carry the HD drive with me when I leave the house.

Anyone that Knows Apple gear will know that the Air does not have an SD card slot. I use a Vanmass 7 port hub that plugs in to the two USB C ports.

As I said it was an experiment, but there may be other users out there who might like to give it a try on their own laptops. If I hit any snags I will amend this post later on.

Not a Mac here. But a full fledged installation of Band in a Box runs perfectly smooth from a 400 GB SD card within a Windows 10 Surface pro here.

Since it can run from a mechanical hard drive, it probably will work. Different SDXD media are rated at varying speeds. A SATA III SSD in a USB3 dock is a lot faster.

There is an issue switching the pointers in BIAB to your Real Tracks and Drums libraries in 64 bit and it has not been fixed. Unless in Catalina, fire up the 32 bit version, switch the pointers, Save and then quit. The 64 bit version will read the Preferences change and behave.

Further to the experiment with the SD card I can say there have been no problems at all. I just cloned the data from my external HD so there have been no issues with switching pointers that Mike mentioned. I cannot see that it is any slower than a mechanical HD either.

So with those results I decided to try it on a USB memory stick to see how that worked. Again it works fine, no issues and the speed is pretty much the same as far as I can tell without using a stopwatch. The stick I used is a SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive 256GB. It is a tiny device and not likely to be damaged when plugged in to a laptop.

Did you install the app onto your system drive or are you runnung everything from the external drive? You may not have encountered the scenario I described.

That's only 12x faster or more than the mechanical HDD so, yea...

I installed the app on the SD and USB stick, so only the plugins etc are on the SSD/HD.

Ok, I don't know if you understand my issue or not but it doesn't matter. You cannot have encountered it.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
