I remember (vaguely) that in PowerTracks I could render a midi file to audio within the program. Select midi track, select destination track and there it was - midi became audio.

Doing that allowed me to normalise the audio of midi tracks that maybe were too quiet and which turning up to 127 wasn't enough.

Now in RB i have to render an individual track to wav by exporting and then re-importing. Easy but lengthy.

Is the old midi to audio command still there but buried? Anyone else remember it? I think I've asked before but no one could tell me if it was still possible.

Maybe its still there in PT - I'll check later but in RB it would be useful.

As long as you have a VSTi synth assigned to that MIDI track, you should be able to use the right click menu on that track to render to an audio track. i believe the command is called "Auto Convert Individual MIDI Track to Audio Track"

Yes John I use this one a lot.I find choosing a different track to write the audio to works consistenly well. Not so much writing over the midi.

I never overwrite the MIDI. I need to make sure the audio track generated well before I make the MIDI go away.

Yes John I agree. You used to have to use a different track then they changed it but it doesn't work most times.

If you are going to render a track to audio, you need to make sure the target track is an audio track.
Long as you do that it works fine in my experience.
I have my default setting for track type set to Audio, so any blank tracks are audio tracks, makes this a non-issue here.

I'm sure most people wouldn't want to make the target track the source MIDI track and thus lose all their MIDI work by writing over it with audio.
Not sure why that isn't actually more difficult to do.

thanks everyone - works no problem. i used to do it in PowerTracks years ago but with the RB upgrades (I only just got up to date in 2018 when I got RB for the first time and now I'm on 2020) i lost track of where the function was.

<< Doing that allowed me to normalize the audio of midi tracks that maybe were too quiet and which turning up to 127 wasn't enough. >>

Hi Bob, I'm curious if you ever use any of the PGMusic plug-ins such as PG Dynamics or PG Peak limiter to increase the volume on those quiet tracks rather than render the track to audio? I don't recall having to render to audio to increase midi tracks on a project to bring the volume up to a sufficient level. Using the plug ins has been a quick and easy fix for me in the past.

To get more synth volume there is also the not-so-obvious Trim function for the track ... but it affects the instance of the synth, so if you use the same synth on all tracks it should make them all louder (from memory).
As mentioned, the PGPeakLimit inserted after the synth would work also.

yes charlie i do use pg dynamics but converting to an audio file, then using the normalise process means i can control volume through the mixer slide/fader and even automate it if i wish

plugins need values entered - the mixer slide/fader is much easier

some midis seem to be balanced to the style they are in so volume varies

No problem. I just wasn't on the same page with you in terminology. Normalize applies a fixed gain across a track and sets a ceiling. You're converting the track to audio and mixing if you're moving faders. Mixer faders do not affect the initial input gain. What you're doing works equally well.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
