I can do just about anything with audio, but video is quite another matter. I would like to know what software people are using to create those videos where you multitrack a performance and show a video of each part being played. Example: Jacob Collier https://youtu.be/pvKUttYs5owThanks for suggestions.
BIAB 2024 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 6.5 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6; Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus Studio 192, Presonus Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors

They are pre-recorded in multiple takes and then set as Picture-in-a-Picture using a non-linear video editor. Very time consuming...

Thanks. Non-linear, I get. So there must be an equivalent of a DAW for video, just with tracks that are video with audio, instead of just audio?

Thanks. Non-linear, I get. So there must be an equivalent of a DAW for video, just with tracks that are video with audio, instead of just audio? That's essentially it, Matt. I've worked some in Cyberlink's video editing software. I think straight out of the box, you could learn to create something like this relatively easily with their built-in capabilities. But, like an audio DAW, there are myriad Fx available 3rd party. Most likely there was a separate audio track mixed with the videos. It's possible (likely) the video clips contained sound if only to help with synching, but ultimately there was a single master audio track. The main point is...thinking of it as a Video DAW is the right way to think of it. That helped me learn the software (which isn't terribly hard) more easily than I might have otherwise, having been messing with audio for some time. ------- I'll throw this in for free. BIAB "save as video" feature (and the apparently abandoned Video Real Tracks feature) may get you a long way. I was looking into it back when I had time, but haven't thought about it much lately until reading your post.

Very helpful, thanks. Especially the name of software to research.
My particular project doesn’t involve BIAB so I posted in Off-Topic.

I use Cyberlink as well Matt. It's easy to sync up multiple takes. This particular tool allows you to do so by lining up the audio.

I would expect to mix a single audio track, so it’s a question of aligning the multiple video takes.
Cyberlink has a bunch of versions. I prefer to purchase rather than subscribe. What version do you recommend? Would the $99 DVD marked to $59 do it?

I'll stand by that, Matt. Though you'd have to do some "out-of-the-box" thinking to get what you want. You know how the program works better than me, I'm sure. Play with that a little, I'd encourage.

I think that's your ticket. That was my version before I lost my system. Annual updates available, usually at a discount (unless they've changed that with the subscription service. But compare and contrast the two versions, ultra and ultimate. It's too early to talk about workflow, but you may need to do some trimming of the individual video clips. Easy enough, if necessary.

I use a product named Edius, from GrassValley. It's a real-time non-linear editor, expensive though, but is used by television studios. The workflow is very similar to a DAW, but of course allows chroma-keying, video adjustments, green-screen, effects and much more. I also use Camtasia from Techsmith which could probably deliver something quite well, but maybe rendering to mp4, mpv etc would be required to get the final output (single track vision would play real time off the timeline, but multiple PIP would require rendering first). They have a free trial. It's much cheaper than Edius, but still not as cheap as others.

I would expect to mix a single audio track, so it’s a question of aligning the multiple video takes. Right, if you record a 'scratch audio' of the master track to each video clip you make, the audio tool will sync that audio on all video clips to get them all to align perfectly. Cyberlink has a bunch of versions. I prefer to purchase rather than subscribe. What version do you recommend? Would the $99 DVD marked to $59 do it? PowerDirector ComparisonI agree with you Matt, I only get the owned version as well. I get Ultimate as it has all the features available. As a first time user it's a little higher price. Once you own it though, the upgrade for the following year is a little cheaper. I purchase it once every two years similar to what I've been doing with BIAB the past couple of times. They also upgrade every year about the same time that BIAB does. I've owned the tool for about 5 years or so now. Here's a few examples of using 2 video tracks to one audio: Berklee Intro to Music Prod Videos

Looking at Steve's link, I think I must have upgraded to ultimate bundled with photo director at one time. I started at version 10 or 11. I don't see anything in that list that would preclude you from doing what you want to do with the less expensive option, but when I decide to bite the bullet and purchase again, I'll go with the Ultimate. Owned. You spend your own money.

There’s some really good info in this thread. I had no idea we had this kind of expertise here. I probably should have started the thread in the YouTube forum but I didn’t know better.
Steve, good info. Was that Mario playing the guitar solo in your first video?
Joanne - very nice!

It was originally a Sonic Foundry product (1999) (having started as a video off-shoot from Acid - so its origin was audio). It was sold to Sony (2003?) (along with Acid) and then acquired by MAGIX (2016). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegas_Pro

Matt, A paid product ($75 US per month) called +++ Livestream +++ is a tool many musicians are using to broadcast home concerts. The limit seems to be three video feeds at the same time.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
