Okay, full disclosure -- the version of BiaB I'm working on at the moment is 2017. I have 2019 in another computer, which is suffering from audio problems, so I'm being forced to use my laptop with 2017, but which doesn't have enough room for the 2019 installation. I have run into this same problem with v2019, however.

It is fairly often when I choose to replace a Realtrack instrument that comes with one of the many Styles BiaB offers. But I have noticed that, in some instances, BiaB will not allow a Realtrack to be selected, usually defaulting to another that is at least somewhat close in style.

I find this infuriating. Especially when I'm trying to get rid of a track that BiaB insists on defaulting to. At first I thought the desired Realtrack might be one that is being shown, but which I don't actually have installed. Nope, that isn't it. I definitely have the set it comes from. I have also suspected that this inability to get the Realtrack I want is tied into the tempo. And I find this to be at least partially true. Even though it shouldn't be, in my case. The track I was interested in specifically was 2189, which has a recommended tempo of 85 bpm. The tune I want to use it with has a tempo of 110, so I was thinking maybe that's why BiaB wouldn't load it. But then when I read a description of 2189, it sez its recommended tempo range is from 70-120. So, that apparently isn't why it wasn't being loaded. But I decided to play my hunch, and reduced the tempo of the song to 85 bpm, and guess what. It loaded. So huh. And then I increased the song's tempo back up to 110. Nothing catastrophic happened. The piano is playing along happily at 110 bpm.

Okay, this is just one example of many I've had where I've had to put up with this. I guess what I'd like to know is, is there any way to turn off BiaB's desire to control things like Realtrack selection? If I can consistently fool it by reducing (or increasing?) a tune's tempo, then I reckon that's what I'll do, as long as other factors aren't involved.

Your initial guess is correct, the substitution is tempo related.

In BIAB go to; Options/Preferences/RealTracks.
Second checkbox on Right column-Allow Auto-Realtracks substitution based on tempo.

Hope this helps.

Hey Vintage, thanks for the tip! I have now disabled that "feature." I also noticed another checkbox where BiaB will automatically substitute MIDI tracks with Realtracks -- another "feature" I haven't liked. So, killed two birds with one stone.

Something I noticed after posting the above message is that, even though I was able to "trick" BiaB into loading 2189, as soon as I hit Stop and Play again, it reverted to its preferred substitution (2190). So I hadn't really gotten away with much.

Hi Michael,

With the tempo-based substitution deactivated, RT2189 should stay in place.

If there is a Realtrack change to #2190 in place in Bar Settings, that would load the Realtrack. Also, check that the style is not frozen.

When BIAB starts doing things that seem a bit unusual, my first step is to reset to factory settings. It's under "Options". Before you run that, though, make sure to save the current settings.

There are two Factory Resets. The upper one keeps all the sound/MIDI setup intact. Run that first. It maybe all that's needed.

Regards,
Noel

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
