Does anybody else remember that band? They are from the very early 70s. They came from Champagne Illinois and were founded by Terry Talbot and John Michael Talbot. They really didn't make a loud splash as a band but the Talbot brothers went on to achieve some success as a duo. I thought about them today because I want to do a remake of Hank Williams "You Win Again" the way Mason Proffit did it. They were one of those bands that people would see them play (they were mostly an opening act) and ask "Which one's Mason?", much like how Jethro Tull and Lynard Skynard were addressed. (And obviously none of them were named Mason Proffit.) They lasted about 5 years as a band and disbanded when the Talbot brothers went solo and did a lot of religious stuff. I think they won some Dove awards, which I had no idea existed until a few months ago since that's not my thing.

They did that song in a slow bluesy manner and it was great. Might be a candidate for my covers album which is "slowly" in progress.10 songs done a totally different way than the originals were done.

Any harp players here? I can't play one worth a damn and this song begs for one.

THAT album (Rockfish Crossing) or the first one? I have it on CD (I disposed of all mu vinyl years ago when I needed the space. I had 24 crates. Made a few bucks and got my space back.) Near the end of their run a friend from here did some work with them as one of those "also played on" people. Their cover of that one song will always be stuck in my mind.

Thanks for putting this up here - never heard of them, but that one link you provided is a solid tune and I think I'm going to dig into them now. Best of luck with your cover!

I have the first two as I recall. We have hundreds of albums — as many folks do. Mine are all late 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Got all the original Beatles vinyl including the Butcher Shop cover (had two but sold one). Lot of underground stuff. I oughta dig them out someday.

I remember them. There was a radio station in Philly WMMR, that played a wide variety of music. Mostly rock but really, anything that was happening at the time. Mason Proffit was one of those bands that garnered some air play. I do not recall the song(s) that were played on the radio. A quick listen to various snippits did not bring anything to the surface as being familiar.

They remind me of Goose Creek Symphony in some ways.

Eddie,

Here's you a full album of The Talbot Brothers, essentially Mason Proffit.

The Talbot Bros -The Talbot Bros (1974) (Full Album)

Time to pull out the grouchy old man thing.

Why, you young kids today wouldn't know good music if you sat on it! Why, when I was young.... We didn't have snow days! We had to walk to school in -10 degree weather though 3 feet of snow. Uphill. Both ways.

There was so much good stuff back in our day from bands that came together, did 2 albums and then broke up to go to new projects. There was a band in the late 60s called Moby Grape. They were out of San Francisco and considered to be in the "psychedelic" category. The name came from a corny joke "What's big and purple and lives in the ocean?" They had one minor hit called Omaha.

Then, as often happens, money did them in. Bands like that came and went often back then. It was a different kind of drug environment then and as people were experimenting with LSD and such there was a lot of transition.

This has nothing to do with Mason Proffit. More just to tell you what the 60s were like. Also look up The Blues Project and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Outsanding blues bands of the time.

"Murder in My Heart for the Judge" is one of my favorites.

And don't forget "Just Like Gene Autury" with Arthur Godfrey. The only 78RPM song I have on a 33RPM album!

I liked Moby Grape and those Grape Jams!

Bloodrock was fun too. Remember the MC5,who were really the template from which Kiss was constructed.

Kick out the Jams, what a great album and song.

"The Motor City's Burning" is a great blues song that as true today as it was back in 1968.

Its too bad that most of the band has died already!

They lived hard! I hung out with Wayne Kramer one night in Cleveland after their show and breweries were adding shifts to keep him supplied. And that doesn't even consider the amount of drugs he used. He has had a hard life. For about a decade I remember he was doing carpentry work because he couldn't find a music gig. Ironically with all that he is still kicking! Sonic Smith was only 45 when the drugs sped his heart up for the last time. Sad.

That is a sad story of a lot of 60s and 70s bands. When people get too much money too fast they look for places to spend it.

Here's a youtube link to that very album. The fidelity is awful by today's standards, but this was a "wild and crazy loud in your face we're gonna rock you whether you want to be rocked or not" party band who didn't care about such things. LOL!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXxsyhpTeJQ&ab_channel=MazNourII

This is also the band that Brownsville Station tried to emulate.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
