Say for four bars, maybe only two, and then the bass comes in. But what does one program to make ONLY the drums sound?

You can mute everything else in BB or do as I do.... use volume envelopes in the DAW....

I use this quite often. In my latest song.... Tropical Sky, I used this along with copy and paste to get the light intro that builds.... volume envelopes absolutely rock.

In BIAB:

C.d | Am.d | f.d | G.d |

C.bd | AM.bd | F.bd | G.bd |

C | Am | F | G |

This will provide 4 bars of drums only then

Four Bars of Bass and Drums only then

Four Bars of all instruments playing.

[The chord locations in the above examples assume each Chord is placed on the first beat and the lines delineate between bars irrelevant to the BIAB 4 beat grid for demonstration purposes of the chord programming.]

There are several other ways to achieve the same results. This is one way of many.

Thank you. I'll make a mental note of this but my DAW experience is so limited I don't know what a volume envelope is. (But I will learn!)

Envelopes.... volume or panning as well as other things... are essentially automated control over a specific parameter in the track.

You can automate or envelope almost anything you want. I generally use the volume and panning envelopes. With more than a few tracks in a project, adjusting volume and panning on individual tracks manually is an impossible task. Envelopes get the job done.

Another option is to use the count-in as a drum intro.
1-click on preferences/options
2-count-in/met
3-allow lead in bars
4-select lead in type

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Thank you! I think I can follow that.
Although I've had BIAB for a few years now, it was mainly a practice tool for playing along to jazz standards and basic blues. Now I want to use it to record my own songs, so I have to build from the ground up! It's a learning experience but the sounds I hear other people get are so good that I want to have them to and I'll get the hang of it, however long it takes.

That sounds super useful. I'm sure I'll be using those "just as soon as I'm able" ("Rocky Raccoon")

Thanks - that simple notation make perfect sense to me and its a simple way to engineer an intro.

Better than fiddling with dialogs, but I get the fact you can do more with the software.

I experimented with a gentle bluesy shuffle start:
C.d
C.bd Am.bd F.bd G.bdp
C Am F G

Simple but powerful. I like the fact you can just look at it and know what is coming.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
