I have a Yamaha DSR500 and I have been advised to get a Midi to USB cable - a UX16 USB-Midi.
Will BIAB (which I have) enable me to receive the Midi data and thence to edit it etc?
Help badly needed as I know nothing about Midi. I'm not a professional musician but a happy dabbler - a poor guitar player and am almost totally lacking in keyboard skills - but it's great fun
Cheers

Hi,
Yes, you can record MIDI into Band-in-a-Box. Normally, the purpose of doing this is to record a melody for your Band-in-a-Box song. You can edit the notes in editable notation mode after you record them, the same way you can edit the melody tracks of existing demo songs etc.

Steve, Like Manning, I looked at the specs on the DSR 500 keyboard. Released in 1987, it has 80 sounds, uses FM Synthesis technology, and predates 'General MIDI' which is the standard that Band In A Box uses. It *can* work with Band In A Box, but will take quite a bit of effort to get it to work CORRECTLY, and even in that, will be severely limited in capabilities, and the sounds will not be 'realistic' as they are today with other, new(er) gear. If you want to, a new keyboard, like this one: http://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/musical.../?mode=overview would allow you to seamlessly connect Band In A Box to the keyboard with the addtion of one of these: http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Midisport-Uno-MIDI-Interface/dp/B00007JRBM One of the other things is that the keyboard comes with the 'Yamaha Education Suite' which is a fancy term for 'follow the blinking lights on the keyboard.' However, since you have some musical knowledge from being a guitar player, it should help you transition to the keyboard a bit easier. This keyboard sells 'bare' in the U.S. for about $90US, and with the 'Survival Kit' for about $140. http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co...-Kit?sku=583835It is a relatively inexpensive way to get far better sounds than the DSR 500, the ease of connection to your computer and Band In A Box, as well as an educational experience. Regards, Gary
I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

The trigger to expanding the keypad's capability came from my grandson, age 6, who enjoys fiddling around and has graduated to: C - root and third and F root and third in the left hand, varied as the mood takes him, and random 'scale' runs, stabs and tinkles, with the right. At his mate's house their "compositions" are burnt to disc and greatly admired by mum's, granma's and grandad's. He would like to do the same at his grandad's. So, that is the entry level. However, I am fired up to extend my song writing and arrangement abilities. My musical theory is ahead of my present guitar playing capability - not having seriously touched the guitar in 20 years - the flute is my present bete noir - a support for my grandaughter in her learning curve on the flute - especially her sight reading. So the Yamaha DSR 500, at the moment, will do if I can segue sounds from keyboard to Mac relatively easily. But, I am willing to lay out the = of $140 for a smooth and unfrustrated transition from KB to Mac, thus satisfying my grandson's immediate interest and hopefully his longer term need and giving my songs a fuller sound. The following is a sample of my song writing and guitar playing http://c1.ezfolk.com/bands/4536/index.phpThanks for your observations and I'll drop into the sites given above - thank you very much Steve

Having fallen for the in/in and out/out trick I have now amended same - in/out out/in - and can use keyboard with GarageBand - no probs - with GB I opened a file, clicked Record and - 'glorious' music .
However, with BIAB I'm at a loss. I cannot make the Kybrd speak to BIAB. What am I missing? Clicking Record gives me nothing - although thr drop down rectangle tells me that the input from the Kybrd is recorded.
My BIAB is V12
Cheers and Help!!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
