I'm trying to use a keyboard for midi thru to play along with BIAB. Everything seems to be working except that the sustain pedal that is plugged into my M-Audio Keystation Mk3 does not seem to have any impact. Is there something that I need to do to get BIAB to "recognize" the sustain pedal? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

FredB,

I think the first piece of the puzzle is to find out what the sustain pedal is transmitting to Band-in-a-Box. It's likely data expressed as a channel and continuous controller or CC numeric data. A good way to find out is to use a Band-in-a-Box tool called MIDI Monitor.

You can open the MIDI Monitor window by navigating to Windows > MIDI Monitor. The best way to learn about MIDI Monitor is to look at pages 394 & 395. Note the Help button on the MIDI Monitor window gives an error message.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have the Midi Monitor in my version of BIAB. I only have BIAB 2019 for Windows.

BiaB 2019 does include a midi monitor AND an event editor. These tools provide the info you are looking for.

FredB, Look in your 2019 Band-in-a-Box user manual, pages 410 to 412.

Thanks Jim - I did a search, and on my manual, it refers to it on page 416, but after following the instructions, etc, I finally noticed that there is a notice to say that it is not available on the 64 bit Windows version. I guess, I need to try to see if I can get the 32 bit version to work.

Martin - Apparently it is not available in the 64 bit version. I was trying to take a screenshot with the Window menu option open to show you that it was not listed, but I could not get a screenshot with the menu dropdown still active.
I'll have a try later to see if I can get the 32 bit version installed and working.
Thanks,
Fred.

Hi Matt - it does not show up in my version under Windows, Midi Monitor.
I took a closer look at the manual, and apparently it is not available on the 64bit Windows version, so I'm going to try installing the 32 bit version later and see if I can find it.
Thanks again for your help.

Please have a screenshot provided with the pertinent manual entry - I could not find it.

Usually both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions get installed during the installation procedure. Look out for bbw.exe (32 bit version) and bbw64.exe (64 bit version).

Here is a screenshot of the BB2019 64 bit version with Menu entries for the Event List Editor and the MIDI Monitor.

OK - got it working but only in the 32 bit version. Maybe my 64 bit version is not up to date..... not sure. Anyway, it took me a while to get the right midi driver setup to get the keyboard working again, but when I finally did. I was able to get the following events in the midi monitor - any thoughts on how I proceed from here to get the sustain to work with the midi through. I've attached a file showing the screenshot from Midi Monitor, but I'm not sure how to get that file to show up in the post.

Edit update - as soon as I submitted the post, the file showed up.
2nd Edit update - I've added a second screenshot to show what happens when I play a chord, press sustain, lift my fingers from the chord and then release the sustain pedal. I looks like when I stop playing the chord, the volumes are reset to zero, and the sustain has no effect..... so the chord does not get sustained after I lift my fingers.

I was hoping that by having my foot on the sustain, the chord would ring on after I had stopped playing the chord.

Any help someone can give on how to get the sustain working would be most helpful.
Thanks

Hi Martin - I don't know why, but for some strange reason, my version does not seem to have it. Here are the screen shots as requested.

In the meantime, I got it working on the 32 bit version, so I've posted some screenshots of what is happening in another post. If there is anything you can suggest to get the sustain working based on what is happening in the midi monitor, or any other suggestions of what to try, that would be really helpful.

Thanks,
Fred.

That’s interesting - for some unknown reason we do have different BB2019 Manuals. Here is a Screenshot of the pertinent section of my BB2019 Manual - without the note, that the Midi Monitor would not be available for the 64 bit version.

The Download version of this manual lacks this note as well -> https://nn.pgmusic.com/pgfiles/support/misc/manual/bandinabox_win_2019_manual.pdf

My BB2019 version has patch 639. I see that the PGMusic Support pages offer patch 644, which I do not have installed here, because I am at version 2021 in the meantime, and I am not sure what happens to this installation, when I run a BB2019 patch even over a dedicated BB2019 installation folder – RealTracks, RealDrums or VSTs of newer versions might get affected, so I leave BB2019 at patch 639.

Running bbw64.exe of the BB2019 version and opening its Midi Monitor makes BiaB freeze here, indicating some trouble with the 64 bit version. The BB2019 bbw.exe version (32 bit) opens its Midi Monitor without problems.

All that said, it might get you hopefully to second base, if you make sure to have the latest BB2019 patch installed.

Good luck.

With respect to your Sustain Pedal problem, you might check on some Record Filter ->

Hi Martin - I've checked the Record Filter as you've suggested.
While I was doing that, I just thought of something else... I've tried with a few different patches, and now the Sustain seems to be working - not sure if it was working before or not.

I'm still having problems with the original patches that I was hoping to use sustain with e.g. Warm Pad patch, some strings patches, etc. However, the sustain does seem to work with Piano patches, Electric Piano patches, also some Guitar patches.

Just not sure why it would not work with the Pad and Strings patches.

Thanks again for your help.
Fred.

I just checked to see, and sure enough, my patch number is only 612. I've tried to download the update, but it seems to keep stalling on download for some strange reason, So I still haven't managed to update it to the most recent version.

In the meantime, the 32 bit version seems to be working fine for me. Just having trouble witht the sustain on some patches, but not all.

Thanks for the pointer on the difference with different patch number installations.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
