That Sadder Day Dance on SoundCloud That Sadder Day Dance on YouTube Today is super bowl Saturday. I liked when we used to do a Stupid Bowl jam during the game with a group called Charlie's Stupid Band, but I've been to a few super bowls too. In 1990 it was in New Orleans, and a group of 5 needed a 6th, so I went for the music. This song is about that adventure. Thanks for listening and your helpful comments. RealTracks in style: 2165:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm NewOrleansSwinginPop Sw 130 RealTracks in style: 2164:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm NewOrleansSwinginPop Sw 130 RealTracks in song: 764:Clarinet, Soloist Older Swing Sw 140 (Bluesy) RealTracks in song: 440:Trombone, Older Sw 140 (Bluesy) RealTracks in song: 438:Sax, Alto, Older Sw 140 (Bluesy) RealDrums [in style:NewOrleansSwinginPop^05-a:Funky Snare, HiHat , b:Simple Ride I played bass and sang. That Sadder Day Dance One more round and we must fly away to New Orleans Take a limo ride to the countryside overlooking Tennesse We stop the bar-cart in the airport to refuel our aging souls And by takeoff time we were outta line cuz everybody knows that CH: You gotta step out on the town sometime. Believe you me if you like. So duck down on Bourbon Street when you get the chance To go looking for that Sadder Day dance. We land right into a jazz band. Oh, what a welcome they provide. We got this far so we get two cars and in a high way we did ride. We drive right by the Whoopie Cushion to the West Bank, or so it seems. Check-in alive with a quick high-five, and take a cab back to New Orleans cuz CH. w/ A horn man named Willie with his rockin' blues band was playin' at N Bridge: Oh, that Sadder Day Dance, it isn't what it used to be. You're takin' a chance cuz what you see is not all ya can get when your whistle's wet and forgets. Maps for the West Bank drivers are a must if you go downtown. Smelling tires burn after 4 U-turns, to Tipitina's we were bound. The Neville Brothers could not invite us so we burned down the Cat's Meow. Oh, Lord VJ said to look both ways if your're looking for that unholy cow. Man, CH: You gotta {Fess-like dribble} sometime. Believe you me if you must. But don't put on your aligator shoes When you're looking for that Sadder Day dance. CH: Because Fess don't live here on Rampart. No, Professor Longhair is gone. But there's rumors in town he invited me down to chapparon N [yadda yadda] I'm coming home to my Happy Day Dance. Wow, seems to be so many words that it might start this post on the 2nd page.

Made me smile from beginning to end :-) Many of the references went over my head, there was a tinge of melancholy in there, right? I almost missed it, if so :-( ... simply because I didn't get the references. But great stuff!!! Loved it :-)

Marty,
Me thinks you are just getting betterer and betterer. This is a really fun, funky blues listen. Not sure where to even start with my comments: Great vocal? Check (with a little scatting included to boot). Popping chorus? Check. Killer write? Check. Cool Instrumental? Check. Pro-production feel? Check. Yup, you got all the boxes covered. Wonderful tune—very impressive outing.
My very best to you,
Deej

Marty, very clever lyrics that tell the story. The instrumentation is perfect and of course your bass playing is exceptional. Very well sung and it is a fantastic listen. Well done, Tom

Marty, You are having FAR too much fun. Clever title. Solid write. Marvelous BAND. LOVE that bass!! (always). Good vocal. Good mix. Very much enjoyed. Memories of New Orleans - or something somewhat resembling memories. Not sure where the glitter came from... Keep 'em coming. fj

N'awlins! Hard to go wrong with that. We are watching the series Treme for the second time. If you haven't...it's well worth the time.
For us loving NO and the music there were a lot of familiar references in this and, man, was it ever well written.
Great BiaB selection and a good choice with that bass guy.
Vocally you did a fine job with the spirit and sheer fun of the write.
That video is worth the price of admission. Love those images.
Enjoyed it all!

Hey Marty ...
You're noit just a good songwriter, musician and vocalist ... you're also a great entertainer! That was a real fun listen. I haven't been to NO since the middle 90os. Maybe I need to go back again.
That was a great listen. Still smiling and taspping my feet. At my age, too much toe-tapping could be a major medical issue! It's all yor fault!!!
Take care.
Alan

Everything to love...fun, swing, solid performances. There's a bit of essing that's accentuated by the vocal processing but no one will care. COOOOL.

Hi Marty. Being a Brit puts me at a slight disadvantage to understand all of this but it sounds like fun to me.

Hey Babu,
I really like the conversational lyrics in this one! I also tend to enjoy a story song! The BIAB horns work really well in this application. For some reason I've not had good luck getting the horns to do what I need. But here they absolutely SHINE
I like the little NOLA instrumental segment in the middle
Your vocals are not only strong, they are also very animated and confidently entertaining! I do enjoy a confident vocal performance!
Nice mix too... all in all I'd say you score a solid 10 out of 10 on this one!

What a great write and performance, Marty! The title play on words is fun and the lyrics tell an authentic tale (no doubt you were there!) with wry humour. I think this is the best, most energetic vocal I`ve heard from you and the horns kick up the atmosphere. Very very good!

Hello Marty,
It's a very mysterious work that fuses blues and Dixieland. Chord progressions are also a mixture of blues progressions and commonly used in Dixieland (eg I-III7-IV). Your vocal fits the performance very well. Enjoyed my listen a lot.
Best Regards.

Hi Marty,
Everytime I hear a song from you, a smile comes on my face. You have a voice that belong to the kind of music you make. All the time I expect you to burst out in laughing or do something you inimitable. And you do! Like in the end of this song, the 'doodle a doodle a' thing. Very funny!
Enjoyed the song very much, Marty Hans

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
