from a previous thread you'll know i now have nectar 3 plus which means - as i've said before - my voice still sounds crap but perfectly eq'd and compressed.

there is a feature called 'unmask' which talks to other tracks which have either relay or neutron elements as plugins and - i think - carves out a chunk of their eq that might 'mask' the vocal.

for novelty value - and my voice needs as much help as it can get - which tracks are masking my voice as being in the same part of the frequency spectrum?

and if its not easy to name particular instruments - is there a way i can find out?

Hey Bob, the Izoptope tools normally do that stuff in the background. It analyzes the frequencies of your vocal track and will adjust those same frequencies lower on the other tracks, kind of like an inverse EQ of what vocals are. Any of your other instruments could have related frequency ranges. As far as if you want to do that kind of thing manually, yourself..... Get your vocals EQ'ed the way you like and perform the opposite EQ tweaks on the instrument tracks. You probably wouldn't want to cut as much on the instruments as you boosted on vocals, etc... Not sure if this is the kind of answer you were looking for.

thanks steve - i was wondering whether to put relay or neutron on all the other tracks or just some.

sounds like they all need it.

Grab a spectrum analyzer plugin (a good free one can be found in the MeldaProductions Free Bundle) and put it on your vocal track. It'll show you what frequency range the bulk of the "energy" of your vocals is in. Then you can use an EQ on your other tracks to cut a bit at that frequency range to give your vocals some room.

Or, even better, get a Dynamic EQ (like the wonderful and also free TDR Nova plugin) and use that on your other tracks (or a bus with your other tracks in it), and sidechain it to your vocal track so that it automatically adjusts the EQ gain whenever your vocals are present, and use the aforementioned spectrum analyzer to set the frequency points of the dynamic EQ.

Let me see, I'd guess piano, guitar, drums, bass and 'X' (any variable) all share the same frequencies as your vocal. <grin>
I'd stick with basics and find the right compressor/EQ combo that brings your vocals out, regardless of whether you like them. To me it sounds like the problem is that they are lacking the presence needed.

First; get them to the front of the mix, then you can worry about other stuff.
One problem people often have is approaching this backwards; focus on the vocals first. If I can get a vocal to sound like it is right in my ear or in my face, then I worry about the next layer, but often that first step solves the following problems right away.

Judicious EQ (cut more than boost), efficient compression to bring them out front (so you hear the 's' and 't' sounds and other annunciations etc), then less reverb (often used to try to improve a vocal but actually muddies it in the end) can help isolate your vocals in a mix. That's how I read your dilemma; vocals not standing out.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
