Hello! laugh

My DAW is Studio One 5 Pro and I also have the latest version of Band-in-a-Box. It's great I can use B.i.a.B. as a plugin "instrument", and since I find typing in my chords in B.i.a.B. extremely tiring, I was hoping to, let's say, record some kind of basic track in Studio One, then use the chord detection to generate a chord track and then let B.i.a.B. play along, using that very chord track just as it does with the set tempo. But unfortunately it doesn't seems to work this way... I know it does the other way around; I know I can transfer chords from B.i.a.B. to Studio One - but that's not what I want and not what I need; as I said: typing my chords is such a bother; it doesn't suit my workflow at all since I know how to play the chords of my song and when to change them, which I do not (or at least not without thinking) when typing them - it's a bit like, let's say: imagine children playing, but before they can, they have to write a script; see what I mean...?

So, is it really not possible to sync B.i.a.B. not only to the tempo Studio One is using but also to its chords? And if this really is not possible, does anyone maybe have an idea for some kind of workaround...?

The BIAB plugin does not have the Audio Chord Wizard functions that would enable it to figure out the chords from whatever you record into Studio One. You would need to record, load that recording into the standalone BIAB, use the Audio Chord Wizard, then open that song from the BIAB plugin.

I don't know if this helps, but if you can record a MIDI file of the chords in your DAW, you could save that and then have the plugin read the chords from that file.

It is true that not all features of the full Band-in-a-Box program are in the plugin at this time, but who knows! More and more features are being added every years. We can't guarantee certain features will be present, but it helps to have people letting us know what they'd like to see for enhancements to the plugin.

Thanks for the quick answer!
Well, that's quite a detour... Is such a feature in some kind of planning stage for future versions? I mean, the combination, the interlocking of Studio One and B.i.a.B. is quite good already, but that would make it perfect, don't you think?

(I really hate typing chords instead of playing them! grin )

Oh, wow; you guys are too quick! grin While I was writing, you half answered my question. wink Thanks! smile

Well, PLEASE do add such a feature with which one can use the chord track of the DAW as soon a possible! Did I mention that I hate typing chords...?

No, serious: I wouldn't mind typing in a few chords at all - but all the chords for a whole song?? That is such a drag - particularly when it's about long and complex songs such as the ones I often write...

No, that's exactly what I asked for which does not work...

I believe we are comparing apples to oranges here. I know what you are saying and I would also love to play a chord MIDI track in Studio One Pro and have the BiaB VSTi read the track.

I believe what Noel meant (Noel if I am wrong please correct me) is that you can play a chord MIDI track in Studio One, save it as MIDI file, then have the BiaB VSTi read that saved MIDI file. That is a work-around to your suggestion.

This stuff is awful confusing. Let me see if I can mess it up more.

BIAB-VST will not interpret the notes in a midi file and assign a chord name to them which can be then viewed in the Chord Chart section. This requires "chord labels" present in midi file. BIAB and the BIAB-VST both will write chord labels to a midi section. But that is based on what you have typed into the chord chart.

BIAB will open a midi file and interpret chords then translate them to chord names and place them in the chord chart.

Scaler will open a midi file and interpret chords and translate them to chord names and place them in the scaler chord chart.

Scalar will allow midi track you have recorded, to be dragged from Reaper into Scaler and will interpret the chords and translate them to chord names and place them in the Scaler chord chart. And then will assign Chord Labels to be dragged back into Reaper.

Here is how it all comes together.
Once the midi track from Scaler is back in Reaper with the chord labels, you can drag it into BIAB-VST to appear in the Chord Chart. That's what you wanted, right? There is currently a small bug with this action listed over in the beta forum, which the BIAB developers have indicated they will soon fix.

I did a video on this whole workflow several months ago... crazy

More confused?? Or maybe just thinking, Cheese and Crackers, if you have to do all that, when do you get any music made? grin

ThorstenV,
That’s a good idea and we plan to add features like that.

Have Fun!

Exactly! See, I know it was never more easy/affordable to produce great sounding music on your own than it is today - and yet we can't, because we have to spend so much time installing & understanding DAWs, plugins and software like B.i.a.B., solving problems, installing & understanding UPDATES of our DAWs, plugins and software like B.i.a.B., solving new problems - and so on....

Then again: great to have a place like this forum where users help each other in no time and the PG Music staff actually seem to care about what their customers say; that's not to be taken for granted. So, thank you all, guys!

It will do it now with UJAM instruments:
"A new custom dynamic mapping API provides auto-mapping with third-party instruments from UJAM, Vienna Symphonic Library, and more coming soon."

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
