Is there a way to edit MIDI notes in BIAB without the mouse? I've found that going into Piano Roll, moving the attack of notes a little ahead, extending some notes, and altering the velocity of notes on certain beats makes for a more realistic guitar melody. However, it's quite a pain to do each note one at a time. Is there an editing tool that allows the user to change velocity, attack, and note duration by changing the numbers?

Yes.

BIAB has three notation modes. The viewer is the first, and the piano roll is the third. Try the second, Editable Notation Mode. Then right/click on a note to bring up a box with options.

It’s still one note at a time, but I find it quick and easy to work with. If this isn’t what you want, let us know.

Thanks for that. I kind of knew that, but I hadn't considered it. It is faster and more consistent than using the mouse. I started doing this today because I had a SW16th track, and step-entered melody. I realized after the fact that the 16th notes entered would not come out with the swing feel. So, in piano roll, I moved the 2nd 16th of each pair to the right to start late, and elongated the 1st 16th to match. I'm not sure that this is the way I'd want to do an entire tune, though. Is there another way to do this? Maybe the notes in a list? Something in which I could specify the first note of each beat as a particular length and dynamic, second note shorter, 3rd beat longer but maybe a secondary length, etc.?

Or is there another way to make the 16th notes swing?

When you are in editable notation mode, there's an option to right click on a note and go to 'edit note" where you can go adjust velocity, duration, forced accidentals, etc. If you using a style with a feel of sw16 it should have that feel to it already though.

Okay, well, it takes a long time to right-click on each note and alter numbers for it. Is there a list of the notes in a song, some way to alter multiple numbers at a time?

I used a SW16th style, but added the melody by step entry after the fact. The melody played back as even 16th notes.

When using MIDI specifically, you can edit events including all MIDI events and lyric events using the Event List Editor. It can be launched in several ways:

- In the Melody menu, choose Edit Melody Track | Step Edit Melody.
- In the Soloist menu, choose Edit Soloist Track | Step Edit Soloist Part.
- In the Window menu, choose Notation | Event List Editor.
- In the Notation window, by pressing the event list button [#]. The dialog will display events on the selected track in the Notation window.

The list uses a color coding based on Event Type, Channel, Duration, or Velocity. If the color coding is based on “Event Type,” the list shows the event as follows:
- Notes starting near the beat boundary are dark pink.
- Notes starting on the off-beat are light pink.
- Patch changes are cyan.
- Controller changes are yellow.
- Pitch Bends are grey.

The Event List Editor allows you to modify, insert, and delete notes as below:
- Double-click on an event to edit it (or press the [Edit] button.)
- [Insert] puts an event before the current event.
- [Append] puts an event at the end of the track.
- [Delete] removes an event.
- [Show] exits the dialog and highlights the note in the Notation window.
- [Play] plays the current event and moves the next event.
- [Update] redraws the notation screen.
- [Edit Lyrics] – [Edit Soloist] – [Edit Melody] selects which track to edit.

It doesn't allow for editing multiple notes at the same time, but this is the closest to a list that I believe you'd be able to find in the program at the moment.

I would, at this point, suggest sending your SGU or MGU song into support@pgmusic.com for review in regards to it not swinging with a SW16 style and freeze the tracks so that our team can take a closer look at the settings on the song and best advise you.

Funkifized,

Another feature of BIAB that you might like to play around with is the "Humanize" functions. These are available for use with MIDI notes that are located on either the Melody or the Soloist tracks.

I suggest that you save your file with a slightly altered name and use this new file for playing around with. This will allow you to get back to the original file should you need to.

All the best,
Noel

I find that after I get a MIDI track or tracks I take them out to a DAW, many of which have multiple and easier ways to work on the track, i.e. being able to select several different events and altering them all with the same change which sounds like something you are trying to do instead of having to do the same thing over and over with different notes. Cakewalk by Bandlab is free and allows this type of MIDI edits.

My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

You probably should quantize it as, e.g., 12 beats per bar, that should give it the swing feel you want.

Menu Melody->Edit Melody Track->Quantize, Time Adjust->Quantize Melody.

There are also options there for "Humanize with swing feel" that may be a viable alternative.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
