Hanging you out to Dry - Wynona Dove

This was posted in one of the BIAB FB pages announcing this artists new commercial single release. I read the back story and watched the video and listened to the song on YouTube. The artist states most of the backing tracks were made using BIAB 2021 Mac. It's a nice performance and production. I've attached some screenshots from FaceBook of her BIAB comments.

A very well-done production no matter how it was done.

The guitar work she or whoever did was first class and she obviously knows how to sing. If you notice, there was not the typical through everything BIAB has into the mix.

Even if you understand the BIAB software it is very easy to overproduce with many instruments.

It is also obvious that whoever mixed and mastered this knew what they were doing.

BIAB is a tool, and like any tool, it is the job of the craftsman to get the most out of it.

I actually liked the song. I can say the bass line was typical unimpressive stuff. It's not bad, it's just not what a high-quality modern-day bass player would play on a rock-style song. The drums also are OK as far as they go but again not what a professional studio drummer would play.

Overall the song works and I wish her the best.

Billy

David Castle was the guitarist, mixer and mastered and was the producer for the single. I checked his website. He's in VA and is the owner/operator of what appears to be a fairly small but busy studio.

I agree the BIAB tracks were understated in some places but it also appears the artist was responsible for the BIAB tracks and not the producer/engineer, Mr. Castle. From the video interview, I'm also assuming the artist is also a newcomer to the BIAB product.

Tasty song. very deft hand at arranging. Definitely not the Kitchen Sink production.
The guitar licks are, I assume, added as they are the sort of thing that, when coming from a Real Track, stamps a song with the difficult to avoid generic tag BIAB can add.

Cheers

I agree rayc. Yes, the guitar licks were live recordings but I felt this song to be a great example of BIAB's versatility and quality to be included into a commercially released song.

Her song sounds nice. She did a good job.

If by "commercial" you mean selling stuff there are already people on here who have been using BIAB for commercial stuff and selling it for years, but it is good to see another.

Also, I hear it through the producers' grapevine that PLENTY of producers use BIAB for commercial commercial stuff every single day, but they just won't tell anyone.

It is, as I hear, the best kept secret in many a studio, and I believe it.

So true ! That's what I'm here for to make it more usable in a studio after experiencing all it's pitfalls working with artists and adding tracks to there recordings. It's not easy but it's getting their, just worn out from all the nagging frown

<< If by "commercial" you mean selling stuff there are already people on here who have been using BIAB for commercial stuff and selling it for years, but it is good to see another. >>

It's hard for me to accurately describe how I mean "commercial". I think your description quoted above is correct and so is your thought that recording studios that are run as full time businesses use BIAB in their tracks as a component of the product they are commercially 'manufacturing' to sell to the public. That's one element.

Another element comes from the artist. Whether they produce the BIAB tracks or the studio makes uses BIAB to create some of the tracks, Here the artist is more than just a complete unknown, want-to-be, struggling musician that hasn't developed a following but has a regionally well known name in their community. The song(s) in their project containing tracks from BIAB has financial backing and the recording project will be presented to the public with an image that projects credibility, sort of a "this is the real deal" vibe.

This isn't a reflection to home studio enthusiasts self producing and financing a personal dream project and using BIAB to save on costs nor on the quality of their efforts. There's plenty of examples in the Users Showcase of equal or better sound, arrangement and production to this release. The difference is in image only.

The marketing for the release of this song on Facebook, if not 'the real deal', has projected that vibe to me and that's what prompted me posting it here onto the BIAB forum. It feels as if there's an organized and financed push behind the artist and song.

Hope this makes sense.

You're right. The artist explains the guitar fills and lead were done live by the song's producer.

Thought I'd add a bit of info. Even though she used BIAB for some of her tracks (which is great) I see no evidence that her music has broken through any more than a lot of artist on this channel. My clue was that she's distributed through CDBaby which services primarily independent artist. Her Spotify Channel has 25 monthly listeners, and her YouTube video of the song has around 250 views. This is not slight on her talent (because she does indeed sound great) so please don't take it that way. I'm just stating what I found. In perspective I have BIAB produced tracks on the same platforms with over 6k plays on Spotify alone, over 100 monthly listeners and video views in the thousands. The BIAB product is a great tool and has definitely given me the ability to release commercially. In the end it still comes down to marketing.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
