Hi all,

December: cold, rainy, stormy. And Delta and Omikron lurking behind every single corner... Wanna go out? To Bud’s bar? Or the racetrack? Nah... How about that instead:

Let's Stay Home (website with lyrics and German translation)
Let's Stay Home (Soundcloud with lyrics)

This one is quite different from my other songs and it was a bit complicated to put together, because I started with the bass and the drums (both MIDI) and sought for appropriate RealTracks later. Which means that I did not take into account what BIAB can do and what it can’t. Maybe you will notice that there are some triplet pushes in the song - although it seems to be able to do the most wondrous things that’s something BIAB doesn’t support (yet), I think (please correct me, if I’m wrong!).

So I had to literally cut out small parts of the guitar and organ tracks to make them fit which luckily worked out better than I had feared.

Maybe you will notice that the whole thing doesn’t sound as good as my former tunes - no wonder: Maha is still ‘out of office’ and I had to do the whole sound thing almost all on my own. And I admit that I’m a complete mixidiot (and I'm afraid I cannot blame my tinnitus alone). When

I played the result to Maha, she advised me to slightly tweak the voice and bass EQ. What the heck - I tried my best and all I can do (for a million reasons) is hope so much that Maha will be on board again soon !!!

There's no video yet and to be honest: I don't know if there will ever be one.

I'd be glad if you enjoyed the listen - take care everybody - stay sage and safe,

Stefan

=============================

This is the band:

Gene Rabbal, B3 org (RT 671)
Mark Lettieri, g (R T3251)
Miichale Thompson, g (RT 1435)

The wonderful solos were played by

Mike LeDonne, org (RT 1493)
Ian McDougall tb (RT 1334)
Eric Marienthal,ts (RT 1776)

Additiona MIDI

Drums: MTPowerDrums 2
Bass: Native Instruments Factory Selection
Horns (tb, tp): Big Fish Vintage Horns

Me: vocals

I used BIAB, Reaper and the BIAB VST plug-in (great stuff !), Neutron 3, Nectar 3, Ozone 9 advanced and Tonal Balance.

=============================

These are the lyrics, but you’ll also find them everywhere where you can listen to the song.

LET’S STAY HOME

Ooh, my baby, she looks swell tonight,
that new skirt really looks good on her.
Her brown hair, that white shirt, what a gorgeous sight,
The mere sight of her makes me purr.

She says, ’Honey, let’s go down to Bud’s bar,
meet our Friends Jack, Sue, Anna and Fred.’
I said, ‘Baby, you know how I can't stand that Fred,
But I think I’ve got a better plan instead:

Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home
And see what the evening will bring...

=================================================

Sports car racing, that’s my kind of stuff
Bought two tickets for tonight's big show.
Put my Vette (*) t-shirt on and got beer enough
With my girl by my side, who could ask for more?

Hurry up, girl, can’t you hear the engines roar?
We’re late, the race has already begun.
She said, ‘Too loud, too smelly, don’t dig racings anymore.
But how about some good old home-grown fun?’

Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home,
Lei’s get closer, the nigh is still young...

Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home,
And let love be our guide through the night.

Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home
Let’s stay home,
And listen to the beating of our hearts.

Note: Vette = coll. for Chevrolette Corvette)

Nice one!
Sounds like home is the place to be.
You done good, yes, yes, maybe not as flashy as most of your stuf but very smooth and enjoyable.

" I’m a complete mixidiot" Ha....that could apply to many of us.

Hope Maha the mix master gets back in the game soon.

Hi Stefan,

You did a good job with this real Blues.
The melody is very nice and the lyrics are wonderful.
The mix could use some -small- improvements, like in the volume of the brass section and reverb.
But beside that minor issues, I enjoyed your wonderful laidback Blues.
Compliments for this all.

Besides that, I hope Maha is getting better and better, so 2022 will be splendid then!

Hartelijke groet,
Hans

Nice. Those horns are smooth and right where they need to be. And man ... That organ sounds like it's right out of the black southern Baptist full gospel church downtown.

Loved it.

Excellent work!

As usual, you do a great job singing. You always do excellent work with the horns. Love the horn screams and falls.

There are places were it could use a bit more polish, but only if I was really paying attention. wink

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Stefan ...

Man, you know how to create and produce some terrific music! yes, we miss Maha's great mixing ... but what you did here is pretty dang good! And, of course, we are hoping for Maha's recovery. Not just for the music, but for every other reason, too.

Your vocals are always top shelf, my friend. And wow, those horns!!!! You know how to use those things! And, as Herb said in so many words, the organ is just so sweet!

Every time I read your lyrics in German, I learn something new. I guess you didn't realize you are also a German language teacher ... Ha!

Di and I think of you guys all the time. Please take care. Big hugs to Maha from both of us ...

Alan & Di

PS: You can have a hug, too!

Hoi Hans,

thank you so much for your very kind comment. Yes, 2022 will be fantastic if Maha will finally improve. Aside from everything else she simply mustn't let me alone with the first mix criticism ever laugh...

I'm glad you liked and enjoyed the song.

I'm so impressed by those horns, wish I could do that. Vocals are great, too, as usual. I didn't feel like the resonator fit, but you can't hear it that much anyways. Great package as we've come to expect from you.

I LOVE THIS! Of course that's no surprise to you, Stefan. Barb & I have been singing this sentiment for awhile now. First of all, the song drips with a very inviting sound that truly supports the title. It always amazes me how your lyrics far exceed the expected --so many interesting twists, and so many cool ways to express it. Speaking of expression, your vocals are always so right-on when it comes to expressing your feelings. The production and mix sound perfect to me. Everything is so clear and distinct --not an easy accomplishment with so many instruments on stage. Hugs and smiles to Maha.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks a bunch, guitarhacker, I'm really glad you liked it. As for that organ: Took me quite some cutting & pasting to get it where I wanted to have it.

Take care,

Stefan

Hi Dave,

thanks so much for your kind comment.

Although I've been using the Vintage Horns for quite a while I never really tried out all the possibilities they offer. Now I started to and I think it paid off.

Yep, hope that 'The Polisher' will be back on duty not too far from now.

All the best,

Stefan

The Soft n Sexy Sound of Stefan "Night Home" Nachtsheim.
No need for a video, (though one would always be very welcome), the song communicates directly.
warm, smooth, excellently arrangement, narrative, melody & vocal performance.

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks

MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:

There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:

1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track

Review - Band-in-a-Box® 2023 for Windows is Overflowing with Features!

"Band-in-a-Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is, without negative connotation, a monster of a program. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. No DAW can do some of the things BIAB does, while BIAB can do a lot that DAWs do."
