Composited and ultimatized in Logic Pro with: Piano / Organ / Synth / Mellotron / Cellos / Percussion
With appreciations to Ravel, ELP, Tomita.
This is somewhat "boxy" but it has its moments. I really like the transition to the middle section, the way the fuzz guitar morphs into mellotrons and strings. And the octave doubling of the guitar for the last few notes, I am particularly pleased with that.
Cool tune. Do I hear more instruments than you have listed or am I hearing things. I liked that slow down at the midpoint. Lead sounds hot (as in intense).

Sorry, I'll update the notes (was just doing that when you posted!)
I an huge fan of Mellotron - even the sample versions. I think the lead guitar coule have the top end rolled off a bit - it's close to icepick in the earness in some spots...OR a decent cab sim IR to give it the natural EQ a speaker offers. The 'tron parts are REALLY lovely. It does have a sense of ELP with Satriani aboard. Excellent progress in prog land.

Ouch. Yeah, I hear that. But no need for virtualization fixes, the recording started fine and I broke it. Really. I took a perfectly nice, shiny pop RealTrack and goosed it up for no good reason with Logic’s “Crunch Guitar / British Invasion” patch – apparently too much, if “icepick in the ear” is meant in a negative way. This will be corrected. Thanks, and thanks for the rest.
Mark, I hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread, but Ezekiel's Storm mentioned he's looking for a Mellotron VSTi.
There are a number of free Mellotron VSTi that are available, but most of them are based on free samples of varying quality that have been released over the years. In some of them, you can hear the loop points (and they shouldn't be looped at all); others are out of tune because... well, the Mellotron was ridiculously hard to keep in tune.
Some Mellotron vendors have gotten around this problem bu going back to the original tapes to get pristine copies, while some vendors have simply added distortion to new recordings to give the that "Mellotron" sound.
But people only recognizes a handful of Mellotron sounds, such as the flutes, strings and those terrible, terrible brass sounds. So that seems a lot of work for nostalgia.
Since even BiaB comes with free strings and flutes, I'd suggest running them through something like this free tape emulator that will add grain, wow and flutter for that classic Mellotron sound.
Icepickness? Check with Trotsky as to his affection for the affliction.
Apparently his assassin used the wrong end of the tool, so the guitar solo could have done it better:
“A mountaineering ice axe has a narrow end, called the pick, and a flat wide end called the adze. The adze of the axe wounded Trotsky, fracturing his parietal bone and penetrating 7 cm (2.8 in) into his brain. The blow to his head was bungled and failed to kill Trotsky instantly.”
Really cool music Mark! The great Gate of Kiev is a great piece of music. You can still hear it in your version.
I like Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" very much, especially "A Night on Bald Mountain". Do you know Disney used the "Pictures" for his animated musical film Fantasia (Sorcerer's apprentice) in 1940?
But... what's going to happen to Kiev now?

RnAM: Thanks, I do like this piece in all its versions. I believe "Bald Mountain" is a separate work, but by the same composer. It will indeed be familiar to fans of "Fantasia" – when I was in high school, seeing that movie on LSD was a rite of passage!
Bloc-Head: I'm a little embarrassed to admit that to me this will always be an ELP tune. But at least I had the courtesy NOT to write lyrics. (Google "Pictures at an Exhibition" and it brings up Mussorgsky's picture with Greg Lake's lyrics under it, grrr!) Anyway, glad you enjoyed, thanks.
