So, for the last week of FAWM (February Album Writing Month) I did something VERY experimental. I think this is the most simple, and yet most musically complex song I have ever written, and BIAB was definitely a co-pilot and not a “tool” on this one.

Notes and Real tracks below lyrics:

https://soundcloud.com/davidsnyderfawm2022/kings-and-queens

For James Taylor fans:

https://soundcloud.com/davidsnyderfawm2022/james-taylor-says

https://soundcloud.com/davidsnyderfawm2022

The song goes from a verse in A to a chorus in Em and back again. Not quite sure where this came from but I have been learning the hard version of Moonlight Sonata on guitar (more than 50 chord movements as far as I can tell, so far) so that might have something to do with it. It also might have some Beatles type stuff going on, not sure.

Anyway, here it is and the others I have done are all in the channel.

For my last one I think I might do something called “Goodbye Fawming Friends” which will be an ode to Elton John.

KINGS AND QUEENS

By David Snyder

V1

I wish that I could take you back
to another place in time
perhaps we were just younger then
or in a different frame of mind
the skies were clear no sound of war
a world of reasons just to smile
and in your eyes the morning light
came sparkling for just a little while

CH

I wish I could
protect our hearts
from all the poison in these days
but until I can I'll just play our song
and we'll close our eyes
and sing along
and say a prayer
that it won't take long
before these kings and queens
are gone

V2

I wish that I could promise you
that things will not get worse
but sometimes it takes us all fighting back
to break this kind of curse
and I wish that I could hold you now
I need to feel your heart
the thing I hate the most about this place
is how much it tears us all apart

CH

I wish I could
protect our hearts
from all the poison in these days
but until I can I'll just play our song
and we'll close our eyes
and sing along
and say a prayer
that it won't long
before these kings and queens
are gone

It's a cracker David,
it makes the month effort worth while just for the 1st verse....but we have the chorus and the lyrics that add even more to the BAM.

The bass seems misplaced to me but I can hear this song fitting into the sorts of arrangements on Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" particularly "1st They Take Manhattan" OR REM's version of that song even more so.

Cheers

NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE

I've got some catching-up to do. And that is certainly worth doing...

That devil living inside your head knows how to spit out some killer lyrics.
I'm envious.
Did you pick him up at a crossroads somewhere?
I need that address.

Back for more later.

THE SCOTTISH SONG.

HA! HA! HA!

Not a fan of Scottish Folk songs (hate 'em, actually), but this is the best one I ever heard (the parts I understand, anyway)

I liked that.... but..... I dug into the list of FAWM tunes..... The Scottish tune was hilarious..... loved the writing. And of course the accent was killer.....and verse 3 with following chorus....and I quote

Quote:
V3

Bha peant lionn aig Molly
thog i air a chroit ??
agus chuir Seamus 'eudach air
le barrachd air poitean ghiomach?

CH

agus chan e dùthaich mhàthaireil a th’ ann an Èirinn??
agus Sasainn faodaidh e grodadh???
agus faodaidh tu falbh uair-eigin do Chanada ???
mas e Albannach eireachdail a th’ annad?

couldn't agree more ! I can't even fathom how to begin pronouncing some of those words..... but.... cool song.

That's a cool sound David! You definitely were getting outside of the box with the rhythm bed and it's lovely! Thanks, Torrey

Great write … sounds like a lost cut from a
CSN&Y Album.

James Taylor Says

You definitely captured the vibe of many of his tunes. And we have listened for decades.

The Scottish Song

We think you did the lads justice smile

Fun.

Loved the chord progressions David. Made the song so interesting. Really draws you in. Super delicate vocal and lyric and the acoustic in the background wow. Up there with one of my favorite tunes of yours. Well done..

Floyd,

I would not suggest signing the paperwork at the crossroads. You will end up working at a very weird place. I can't get specific but it is located in a place they called D.C.

Hi David,

Wow!!!

This is fantastic. It's really engaging on listening. I love everything about it. If this is what you call "experimental", please keep on experimenting!

All the best,
Noel

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
