The Russians are coming!

State Sponsored Soviet Synth Rock with Choir.

https://soundcloud.com/athanorsoundlabs/red-menace-wav

I started this with BIAB but it is so heavily edited and revised I don't think much if anything is left from what it gave me. I think it still counts.

The Soviets produced some very cool and unusual synthesizers. Very unique and full of character. I was playing around with virtual versions of some and decided I wanted to do a piece with all Soviet instruments.

While there is a plethora of information on Soviet era synthesizers and even guitars, I have been unable to find any information on Soviet guitar amplifiers. Surely they must have played those cruddy Soviet guitars through something!

Using my imagination, I just took a wild guess as to what they would have come up with and played my bass through through a Sunn 1200S and two layered guitar parts through a Silvertone in Amplitube.

The rest of the instruments are:

LEL drum machine from Rhythmic Robot

Polivoks from Hideaway Studios

Soviet Synths from Mars

Vox Continental from Sample tank

EastWest Symphonic Choirs

Recorded and edited in Cakewalk.

Mixed in Harrison Mixbus 32c. The only effects are Harrison's console EQ and compressors along with IK Multimedia Tape Machine, Tape Echo and Sunset Sound reverb.

Mastered in TRacks.

Amusing title - there's nothing truly "red" left in Russian other than in the memories of some older citizens.
Nice industrial mechanical robotic masses choir construction - I enjoyed it.
I think the title is amusing but given the current circumstances it may be wiser to use something like Ghosts of the Ancien Machine Reunite.

Thanks for the comments.

I actually had the whole thing recorded before all that recent unpleasantness started and was sitting on it. I like to sit on things for a bit before mixing them so I can come at them with fresh ears.

My wife found an LP in a thrift store from Soviet Russia of what can best be described as bombastic patriotic music. I tried to imagine what it would be like if the Ministry of Culture or whatever it was put out something like that in a "Rock" style. You know, to appeal to "the younger Comerades."

When I first listened, I thought you had completely nailed the stuttering vibe of broken machinery... They I realized my audio driver driver had gone on the fritz again! grin

Well done - it captures that nationalistic anthem sound in a minor-ish key played on State-produced (but not State of Art) equipment.

All things old are new again, and with all the classic (and beloved) instruments well sampled, more and more obscure Soviet-era synths, tape recorders and other instruments are getting their own VSTis.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I didn't care for the intro but once it got going I was all ears

I think you nailed the Red Menace perfectly

Super sound sources

Two thumbs up

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

I have Hainbach's "Landfill Totems" plugin for which "complex sounds have been expertly created from vintage test equipment collected from nuclear research labs and scrap heaps". It's tons of fun.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
