Everybody's Cheatin'

I literally put this together in about 2 hours last night. I guess you could call it an ALT Blues Rock. It's the first time I've used any of the lap steel RTs. Glad I did - like it quite a bit. Mastered it using Soundcloud's Mastering Service. My last 6 songs were mastered in the same way. I've been happy with it.

Did I pan the rhythm guitars to far left and right? Sometimes I think so; other times I kinda like it. I saved the song a little bit too loud, I think. Whatcha think?

Hey Al...cool tune...I love the lap steel lead...I think the mix is great...I'm listening through headphones and it sounds like a good stage...I think your panning is fine...so...using BiaB as we do is "everybody cheatin'" just a bit? smile I know I'm not going to quit...don't think you will either...cause we love what we're doing!! Great use of the Band (in a Box)!

Al,
You are a master of progressions and arrangements. Fantastic work, especially considering the time it took you. This is more done in a form of a song than instrumental, so all you need is a vocalist. Otherwise it sounds perfect and finished to me. I don't think it is loud. Thank you for sharing.

Hey there Al, this is not fair! It takes me forever to come up with something barely presentable - and you can put something like this together in a couple of hours! I really liked this sound. As much as I love pedal steel, I don't like lap steel nearly as often. I'm going to have to be more open minded and check these tracks out. I really like what you pulled out of it!

Nothing jumped out in the mix as unbalanced. Easy listening blues! smile

Hey Al,

I noticed the hard-panned guitar right away, but I really like it and don't know why it isn't done more often. As others have said, this sounds like it's ready for a vocal! Good work, I'm working on a straight blues myself right now, getting back to my roots as it were.

Hi, Al!! The Blues is meant to be played loud. A friend of mine plays pedal steel, but, man, you got this guy to rock out some good blues. Great Blues. Love the baritone too --heck the whole band is just perfect. Yes, I like the space the panned guitars provide. Really fun Blues progression. That was definitely two hours well spent, Al.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Dan ...

Thanks for the listen and feedback. And nope, not gonna quit. I'll be 76 on my next birthday. Age is a number - it's what you do behind that number that matters. I played professionally for almost 55 years. Seven or eight years ago I began losing feeling in my left hand. Until recently I had almost no tactile sensation my fingers of that hand. I total reconstructive elbow surgery earlier this year and the feeling is starting to return.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Misha ...

Not sure I'm the master of anything, but I appreciate the nice comment. I don't have a voice for this style of music - and a lot of other styles. My wife, formerly a fabulous singer, is no longer able to sing at that level any more - declining general health and early dementia.

So I'm pretty much stuck with the instrumental version.

Thanks again for the listen very nice comments.

Hi Brad ...

Many thanks for your kind words.

My favorite instrument is the pedal steel. I think it can induce more passion, upbeat or sad, than any other instrument. But UI have to admit these lap steel RTs are pretty dang good!

I've posted mostly instrumentals in the 8 or 9 years I've been on the forum. Although there have been several exceptions, most of them took less than 6 hours to create and post. Chord progressions just seem to come to me naturally = although the often require some tweaking.

Anyway, thanks for the visit and kindness.

We liked the mix and the soundstage it presents - would not change a thing.

The lap steep was a good choice.
Those licks have a very melodic feel.

And as always with you the chord progression and arrangement are top notch.

Enjoyed it!

Alan,

Wow, you did this in two hours? Jeez, it's sad how long it takes me to do a song . . . and they never sound as clean and complete as this one does. Outstanding tune. Nicely done!

Super choice of instruments that were blended together perfectly.

Hi Alan,

No the guitars are panned just right - typically in a busy mix you would pan L/R around 35 to 40.

Hi Deej ...

Yep - just under two hours. Being a caretaker for a wife with dementia and keeping the house running is a full time job - have to use my time as efficiently as possible. Actually most of my posts (the few with vocals take a bit longer) are done, inception to posting on Soundcloud, in 6 hours or less, usually about 4 hours.

Glad ya liked it. Thanks for letting me know!

Wow..... really good jam.

The lap steel really reminded me of David Lindley and the tone he had on Jackson Brown's Running on Empty album.

Yeah, that jam worked well for me. Nicely done.

EDIT: regarding the panning of guitars. On my speakers, I couldn't really tell much about the panning. The only time panning too far is a problem is if the playback mode is mono and it's not a combination of the 2 channels.

On practically all my songs I tend to put the rhythm guitars 100% right or left, generally with 2 guitars and each recorded uniquely. No cloning. My latest song is a good example of that. Rhythm guitars are close but not exactly the same and they are panned 100% opposite each other. This gives a very wide and full sound to those instruments. You can also do this with say a piano and a guitar playing a rhythm part. It balances the stereo spread or sound stage. I saw something about mixing recently that confirmed what I have been doing. The individual was saying that you shouldn't be afraid to commit to hard panning. I also do the same thing on vocals to thicken them up. Again.... I did this on my last song. The panned vox are considerably lower in the mix than the main vox. Harmonies are around 50% IIRC in that song. I wanted them to blend more rather than stand apart.

Edit the edit:

Sounds good in the cans. Leave it alone and do it again on the next one.

Regarding loud: As long as you don't compress the crap out of it, which it looks like you didn't.... let it roll. I'd rather have a loud mix with dynamics in it any day over something weak sounding. Whatever you did.... it worked.

I caught a brief glimpse of "Jackie Blue" in there towards the end.

Al,
That is some sweet, fast work with Biab.
Panning sounds right to me and the lap steel zips around the brain beautifully.
Enjoyed!

I rarely use a steel guitar, usually it just doesn't sound right... but in this song it is the star, works really well. I had to try that one in one of my WIP blues rock songs and seems to be a good fit. And you can always trust on that baritone guitar. Great mix, the drums rock hard. Beautifully working chord progression, as always, no cheatin'.

I like the mix and the instrumentation.

And no, you can't pan the rhythm guitars too far left and right, they are supposed to live out there.
100% left, 100% right and balance with levels to taste. Instant wide stereo field in 2 minutes.

The song is pretty cool with the very good arrangement. I could see it working well with vocals, but it also works very well on its own.

Making bits and bytes sound good...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
