Hello all,

I believe it has been about 3 or so years since I participated in this forum. Life gets interesting.

On my now-dead computer, I had an old version of Power Tracks installed. I was using a SoundBlaster Live, a very old computer barely powerful enough to run Windows XP, some music programs, and a Midiman Oxygen 8 controller, along with the Roland Sound Canvas and a few other software goodies. This was, I believe, around 2005.

I would use the soundfonts to compose tracks on the Power Tracks program so that I could avoid the time-lag latency of my Roland SoundCanvas that came with Power Tracks. When I was happy with it, I would record it to a WAV file using the Sound Canvas and a few other software-based goodies that I had acquired here and there. I got some nice things with it.

Now, I am getting a computer with Windows 7. I gather there are no sound cards that load Soundfonts. So here are my questions:

With the new more powerful equipment, do problems with latency and software samplers like Soundfont players still exist? Is there a soundcard that will load soundfonts that are compatible with Windows 7?

I cannot spend much money as I am on a fixed retirement income. So the Ketron SD2 Orchestral Wizard is definitely out of the question.

Regards,

Alan

Well Alan, at least you picked probably the best sound module you could not to buy.

Depending on which version of Windows 7 you get, the Roland VSC-DXi will work with the 32 bit, but not the 64 bit. The Coyote Forte DXi, for $40, would be a good choice for you.

I would upgrade to the latest version of PowerTracks Pro Audio, and if you were a Band In A Box user, there are some huge surprises in store for you in that arena. However, upgrading to the latest 2010 version of BIAB is probably more than what the most expensive version cost in 2005. If you use it, however, you'll find that it'll be worth it.

The original SoundCanvas that you were talking about, the VSC, is NOT a DXi, which is a software synthesizer. The new ones are, which means with ASIO, no latency. The Coyote Forte DXi also will show no latency with ASIO. ASIO is a driver for your sound card.

You can Google 'SoundFont DXi plug in' or 'SoundFont VSTi plug in' and find software solutions to using SoundFonts. This is a free multi-timbral VSTi, a different sort of software synth, that PTPA supports, and you can load SoundFonts into this, and use it.

Welcome back, and I hope this helps.

If you have a PCI slot on that new machine and WANT to use Soundfonts install the SB Live. You may not be able to get Win 7 drivers from Creative however do a search for KX drivers. Third party for the Live card and Win 7 support. A bit tricky at first.

Thanks, you guys.

I appreciate the feedback.

I found my old disks, and it appears the last version I had was BIAB 12 and Powertracks Pro 9. The little upgrade book I had for BIAB is dated 2003. But I think I got it in 2005, if I recall correctly.

So here are a few other questions:
  • Would I be able to install BIAB-12 and PT Pro-9 on 64-bit Win7?
  • Garry Curran says the Roland VSC-DXi doesn't work in Win 7 64 bits. Isn't there some kind of compatability mode where it would work?

No compatibility mode for VSC DXi, simply won't run. Many have tried.

PTP 9 may run on Win 7 if installed in the programs x86 area for compatibility. Win 7 itself is pretty good handling the 32 bit programs .. you may get an error the first time it is run, and Win7 may ask if you want to try it in compatibility mode which should work. PT9 was quite a while ago though. I am pretty sure it is 32 bit. I remember the 16 bit versions, but I think they were around PT4 though 7.

How about BIAB 12? Would that work in Win7 64 bit?

Also, do my licenses for BIAB and PT9 allow me to have those on 2 computers at home? I would be the only one using them and not at the same time.

Alan,
As Bob said, Windows 7 64 bit runs older 32 bit apps just fine, and since even the newest Band In A Box is still a 32 bit version, I'm willing to say that v12 will run just fine.

The licensing agreement indicates that you can run one copy on one computer at a time. There is no registration key, and no database for keys. If you are moving from one computer to another, i.e., your old one to the new one, then I don't see an issue. Running the applications on two computers at once though would be not consistent with the EULA.

Finally, I would say that IF you plan on using Band In A Box, and can find a way to afford it, upgrading to the UltraPlus Pak will amaze you. This will give you the latest Band In A Box, fully stuffed with all styles, all Real Drums and all Real Tracks (wait until you hear Real Drums and Real Tracks) plus give you the latest version of Real Band, which takes components from BIAB and Power Tracks and combines them, giving you the best of both worlds. Three hundred bucks is a lot of money, I'll admit, but if you can swing it, you'll be happy you did.

Gary

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
