Hello Friends,

I am new to the Band in the Box forum. This is my first post.
2 years ago I suffered a severe brain injury and concussion. I am still healing. As part of my healing I am using my photos and writing music to learn Smart Show 3D and Band in the Box. This slide show was made for the end of the year meeting of the Photographic Art Society of Florida which I am a member.
Photographic Art Society of Florida www.PhotographicArtSociety.org

Since my injury, I am mostly home bound, all the photos taken this year are from my back yard. I wrote the song to go along with the photos, using Band in the Box. I still have a long road ahead until my brain heals, but I hope to share some more videos with you in the future. I hope this video will be an encouragement to you in some way.
Hugs and blessings, cheryl anne

Hello Cheryl Anne,

Welcome to the forum!

This is a great first post. Very lovely and heartfelt--and cheerful. It made me smile. Loved the slide show.

Based on what you said in your intro note, this is probably the very best thing you can be doing--writing songs and singing as loud as you can. There's a lot of healing magic in music, and you have some magic going on here.

Thanks for posting, and again--a big hootin' and hollerin' welcome.

smile

P.S. I absolutely LOVE these lyrics. Kinda Joni Mitchell, who was a painter, too. Interesting since you are a mixed media artist as well.

Cheryl Anne,

Welcome!
That is a sweet song...I'm listening & typing so not watching the vid.
You've a good grasp of the basics in BIAB.
The stereo image is a bit mid 60s The Beatles but the sounds are cool.
There're plenty of good ears as well as voices, songwriters and performers in this forum.
Do some listening, drop a comment and don't be afraid to ask for help, advice etc.
Folk here are most accommodating.

Cheers

Hi, Cheryl Anne.

Welcome to the forum!

Nice song and vocals! smile

It sounds like you were playing BiaB on the computer, and singing the vocals into your Zoom. Which is fine - anything that gets the job done is good!

But I'm pretty sure that the Zoom can also function as a USB microphone with your computer, so you can record your vocals directly into BiaB.

There's an Audio track in BiaB, and pressing the red Record Audio button on the Transport toolbar - not to be confused with the extremely similar red Record MIDI button sitting next to it wink - will let you record the audio track.

Of course, you'll probably need to wear headphones so the playback doesn't record into the vocals.

The advantage of doing it all in BiaB is that you can adjust everything with the built-in mixer, as well as add things like reverb to the vocals. You can also "punch in" and just record a portion of the vocal, so you don't have to re-record the entire track if you want to do another take of a verse.

Just a suggestion you can feel free to ignore! laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

What a nice song, sung by an equally nice voice! Slide show was good, too, I know that it takes a lot of work to get so many nice flowers to thrive in your backyard like that. Really good first post and happy holidays to you!

Cheryl Anne,
Welcome to the Showcase!
Neat tune, well composed and sung. Thank you for sharing.
Misha.

P.S. Seems like you have all you need, talent, hardware and software and a will to learn. David (dcuny) has good suggestions on using your mic as a USB mic. My mother in law, who is a professional musician uses similar Zoom mic, so I am certain what David mentioned can be done, as that is one of the ways she uses it. The forum is great to ask things if you get lost in the setup. People are friendly and will explain how it can be done in a "user friendly" manner. Good places to start would be: "Beginners Forum" and "Recording, Mixing, Performance and Production" sections of the main forum.

Hi David,

Thank you SO much for taking the time to write. I am very fortunate to be alive. And yes, I agree, writing music and art are a great healing power for sure.

So funny I really enjoy Joni Mitchell, she and Neil Young and Dan Fogelberg were my favorite artist growing up.
Some of my new favorites are Amy Grant, Casting Crowns, David Meece.

Every time I sing the song, I smile because i am so grateful to the Lord for all He has done for me.

I was so excited to see that other artist are using Band in the Box, what a great program and great group of people behind the scenes, without their help I would never been able to start with my music again.

Thank you for reaching out and thank you for the kind welcome.
Have a very Merry Christmas.

Hello Mr. Rayc,

Thank you for writing. I appreciate you taking time to listen. With my brain injury, I am surprised it came out at all. LOL. But I am having fun learning. Band in the Box has so much to offer, that I would have to live until I was 100 years young to try it all.

I am also amazed at ALL the amazing artist on this forum, if I could be 1/2 as good as you all are, that would be something for sure.

Thank you for reaching out and I appreciate the offer to help in the future. You never know I just might take you up on it. smile.

Well thank you again and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hi David,

Thank you for writing. Yes, I did use Band in the Box for the music part, then played the music, then sang into Zoom to combine the 2.

I was not aware i could do what you suggested. So thank you for telling me how to do that. I am going to cut and paste your letter and print out, so I can do step by step and try it out for next time. I have 2 songs i am working on and I could do that for one of them.

I wanted to use Band in the Box today, but my head is swelled up and painful, but hopefully in a couple of days, I can try your suggestion.

Thank you for reaching out. I appreciate the help and suggestion. Have a very Merry Christmas.

Hello Mr.TuneMonger,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really had fun making the slide show, but yes, it does take a lot of work to keep my little garden/yard growing.

In Florida we are fortunate to have nice weather most the year, so flowers love to grow here.

I hope you have a blessed Christmas also. Thank you for reaching out.

Hello Misha,

Thank you for the welcome. And thank you for the suggestion. Yes, so many talented folks on Band in the Box forum its amazing to say the least.

After my brain swelling does down in a couple of days, I plan to try out what David suggested for sure. If I learn one new thing a day and apply it to any project, that project can have a chance to be better. I like to learn, just have to do it in little steps, for now until i get better.

Yes, I do plan to look into the other parts of the forum, I can read for about 1/2 hour then my head starts pounding, but if i research some each day, I agree with you, the other forum areas will be a HUGE help in my journey.

Thank you again, have a Merry Christmas.

Hi Cheryl Anne.
This is a sweet song to brighten up the day.
Recording and BIAB is a steep learning curve but you can learn from others here.

A friend of mine from London has a condo in St. Pete's. A lot warmer than the UK at this time of year.
At any time of the year in fact. smile

Enjoy the learning.

Welcome to the forum, Cheryl Anne.

Great first song post, I really like the song and your video.

As David said, creating music (or art in general) is a great way to get better.
And if you're like me, music puts you in a better mood and keeps you positive no matter what.
All the best from my side of the pond.

Hi Anne,

Welcome. Nice song but the recording may need to be reviewed. Biab lets you record your voice and incorporate it directly into the instrumentalization. This will give more breadth to your song. You will find many tutorials about it. But it's already very well thought out and done.

Chyrl Anne, you are quite an inspiration. I loved the upbeat, appreciative lyrics in your song and the melody you developed fits it well. Great idea to help your healing come along with this tool. I know it can be frustrating when you used to be able to do things so much more easily, but just keep at it as you can - and enjoy the journey. Welcome to the forum, I think you'll like it here. I think you'll find many (all) of the people who have already commented on here are very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help. I've been in the forum for only a few months and they've helped me a ton. It's going to be fun and I look forward to hearing your next one.

Cheryl Anne—

Welcome to the BIAB Forum! It’s a great community of artists and BIAB enthusiasts, and I have no doubt you’ll enjoy your time here. Your first effort is impressive—really good song with a great message—and you have a lovely voice. So you have all the tools are your disposal.

My only advice going forward is to just keep writing, recording and sharing. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from others on this board, both from their comments and suggestions on my own songs, but also by listening to their songs and hearing the things they chose to do as artists from a production perspective. And folks are plenty helpful in sharing tips on how to improve your use of BIAB.

David has given you some good suggestions right off the bat that will help improve the quality of your recordings. You might also want to explore recording outside of the BIAB program using a DAW such as GarageBand, Logic Pro or similar PC software—but no rush in doing so. It gives you a little more choice and flexibility in mixing (and I think most here take that approach, though I could be wrong about that).

Most importantly, stay patient while you’re learning. I remember being quit intimidated (and quite honestly, discouraged) by the program and the whole recording process at first. And while I’ve still only barely scratched the surface of what can be achieved, the improvement over the years is measurable (and very much attributable to lots of helpful folks on this board). So stick with it!

Lastly, sorry to hear about your health battles, but glad you seem to be on the right track, and as others say making music is often the best medicine. Wishing you all the best for your continued recovery.

Hope you have a lovely holiday,

Deej

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
