Does anyone know how to move the Band-in-a-Box sounds folder (located in C:/Program Files/PG Music Inc) to a different drive? Of course I can copy and paste the folder, but I want to make sure BIAB recognizes the new location.

This question intrigued me since historically BIAB has put very little in the Program Files folders. In fact, one of the frequent errors we see people attempt is installing the main program there, which will not work (that's about the only place you should not put it).
On my system, I have less than 4 GB of files for RealTracks and Drums in this folder.
But given its location in that place, where we never before could put BIAB, I recommend we check out WHY it's there before moving it. I have asked the developers if they can comment.

Thanks Moultipass,
I just checked out Symlink (never used it) and it can obviously do the job. I was hoping to find some preference in BIAB that would automatically look in the new location (which some other programs allow you to do) but if BIAB can't do that, then this solves the problem. I think I will use it for some other data heavy programs that clog up my C:drive as well!

I am not aware of any preference setting, but then again, until your question, I did not know these files were there. Hang in a bit until I can come back with an answer one way or another. I'm actually surprised BIAB would put something that takes up any real space on the boot drive without a choice. Things like Fonts are nothing by comparison.

Thanks Matt, The Band in a Box Sounds folder installs on the C: drive, and is over 7GB. I rarely use it (just for playable realtracks, I guess). So it would be great for BIAB to let you choose where to install it. Maybe it did and I didn't notice, but even so the program should have a preference to change it. Perhaps it does, but in any case Moultipass's advice to use Symlink will work.

I did this a few months ago, think I found the answer here on the forum somewhere. It's something along the lines of uninstall Sforzando and then reinstall without doing it from the PG installer. Go to BB/Data/Installers and you should find the installer there. Edit: I think this might have been the thread. https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=742224#Post742224

Thank you Lee, I searched but couldn't find that thread myself. So it is a great help. But I'm glad I asked here, because while this method works, Symlink (recommended by Moultipass) is actually a little easier and faster. In any case, now that I know about Symlink I am using it to clean up my C:drive of other memory hogging folders (data only - not programs) and am in the process of reclaiming over 50GB of space. I found a free program called Spacesniffer ( http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/) and it told me visually which were the biggest folders on my C:drive and I am symlinking them to a different drive. So all good.

As a sideline, there's also a neat program called 'WinDirStat' that presents a graphical display of what files are stored on the drive, and how much space they take. You can click on any of the colored squares in the display and it highlights and shows you exactly which file and the amount of disk space being consumed by that file. It's also ideal for showing disk fragmentation.

ThomasS, OK, it turns out this question arose during beta testing. I can't post that thread, but the bottom line is that you would need to run the installer again to place the files on another drive, because of registry entries. I think you already know this, but if you have more questions, I can try to repeat some of the discussion without revealing anything else from the testing process, nor the names involved.

Of course I can copy and paste the folder, but I want to make sure BIAB recognizes the new location. Yes, you can move it to a different drive. Then, run the Playable RealTracks installer and point it to the new location. It will remember the location for future PRT installs.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
