Good morning,
I have a little problem…
My Biab songs take a long time to regenerate, it's very very annoying,
I had a 2013 macbookpro which worked great but had this problem.
I was able to invest in an MBP M1 max/32Gb ram, a nice racing beast and I thought that would solve this problem.
Nay, I'm still at the same point, sometimes almost a minute to absorb a few chord changes and even just the change of a chord spins the wheel for 30s, the M1 max hasn't changed anything at all? this is the case even with just 1 verse of 16 measures
Is this “normal”, I watched BIAB tutorials on the internet or the loading is almost instantaneous, but it was on a window system, can this be the cause of this problem?
I have an audiophile version (with AIFF files, much heavier) but I just redid the installation of BIAB with only MP3 files and it's the same thing, no improvement, sometimes I have time to go make me a coffee...
Does anyone have the same problems or is my system (monterey 12.6.3) the problem. how is your workflow?
thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Take care smile
phil

No that's not normal at all. In the RealTracks Preferences dialog, is "Speed up generation" checked? With your system it should probably take a split second for playback to start, however if you had the setting unchecked, BIAB would be generating the whole song prior to starting playback and it would take a bit longer. Still that doesn't sound like your issue. Try closing BIAB, then duplicate the Preferences folder (in Applications\Band-in-a-Box) and name it Preferences_backup. Then, delete all the files in the Preferences folder. Now you can test playback with the factory defaults.

Did you actually try installing the program to your M1's internal HD and running it from there?

hello,
"Accelerate generation" was unchecked.
by doing so, the improvement is obvious, but by regenerating the prefs it is even better.
I had installed BIAB on the internal disk with only MP3 files (I thought it would speed up the loading of the RTs, but it did not improve the loading) but I was also using the disk provided by PG for the audiophile version with AIFF files. I did some testing before posting to see which setup would work best.
now with the external audiophile HD it's very good, so I'm only going to use this installation and fire the other...
Do you think that copying the HD audiophile on an external SSD will speed up the program ?
Thanks a lot Andrew, you saved me a lot of time. ;-)
take care

It should be quicker with the aiff on an SSD as Biab don't need to decompress the m4a first to write to RAM.

I don't think so, I took the audiophile version because it provides a HD with the original AIFF files (well, there are also the MP4 files…), and this precisely to avoid the MP4 to AIFF conversion, because the conversion will not be a true AIFF file, it will have lost a lot of information. the audiophile RT folder weighs 1.61TB, that of an MP4-only version is 130Gb.
thanks anyway
phil

"In the RealTracks Preferences dialog, is "Speed up generation" checked?"

I don't recall ever seeing this setting, where exactly will I find it?

hello, the problem is solved thanks to Andrew-PG team, indeed the box was not checked and in addition I regenerated the prefs and now the loading of the RT is almost instantaneous, I tested and no notable difference between a system installed on the internal SSD HD and an installation on an external HD, namely the HD provided by BIAB for the audiophile versions...thank you for your comments

I've run that test many times over the years. My findings are the same.

I have everything installed on a Thunderbolt connected SSD, however. It's no faster, true, but USB connected drives and hubs sometimes fall asleep and don't wake up unless you unplug and re-plug. Hard to believe that Apple has never fixed this in the 20 years since I first observed this on the G5.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
