Hi, what I was wondering was this. When you post a song to this forum should you have all your songs copyrighted? I have been using band in a box for a long time and at first I used it for doing covers, but, I know that you're not supposed to post links to covers or anything on this website. So, I started doing a lot of Originals since I found that out, but, I didn't know whether it would be safe to post them here if they don't have a copyright through the Library of Congress? So, do any of you have an answer to this question? Should I copyright all my original material before I posted on this forum? I know that if you have a time time date stamp on the date of the original creation of the song that it's considered copyrighted. But, should I do a copyright through the Library of Congress for stronger protection to make sure these songs are copyrighted? And if any of the moderators read this post can you please answer it also? A long time ago I used to copyright a lot of my originals when it was more affordable, but it's gotten so much more expensive even with the copyright office to do it online that sometimes you wonder whether it's worth copywriting at all or if you should just let caution blow to the wind. Anybody that has any suggestions for me I would appreciate that thank you very much and happy band in a box creating.

You're required to use your song or one you have permission to use OR a song that is in the public domain.
Copyright requirements vary from country to country.
This question has been asked in various forums on this site so I suggest start by doing a search & then, when you're thoroughly confused, seek legal advice.

Cheers

trapper456,
User Showcase is mainly reserved for musical posts.

There are several main forum threads, where this would fit better, like:
Songwriting
Off-Topic
Band-in-a-Box for Windows

or couple of others...
Kindly consider posting there...
Thanks.

Thanks I just got a definitive answer from another user, he said no ones going to steal your music, no ones going to steal my music. You can't make any money off of music anymore. So I guess no you don't need to copyright it anymore, because in my thoughts, everybody's writing their own stuff.

That's an amusing answer and allows you to shrug your shoulders & move on BUT
It's not true on any level.
Someone might like the song & use it or elements of it. If you post a song on Soundcloud etc. and make it clear you hold copyright, if you send yourself a copy of the file, if you state when posting and make it clear then you have an argument in most jurisdictions.
Money can be made from music - "plays" on streaming services, placement in movies/adverts etc. via Songtradr, making an album & selling it in physical &/or digital form can all generate income. Probably next to nothing but some. Sites like SoundClick and Soundcloud as well as many others allow covers to be posted and rip offs too.
Someone's blithe/off hand/dismissive, nihilist of amused remark does not a truth make no matter how close to a reality it may veer.

Cheers

I'm putting together a resource to make this more simple, I was trying to keep a conversation going on my other thread, but some members didn't take too kindly to it. Send me a message and I'll keep you in the loop. I'm going to pay for a lawyer and run my notes by them to make sure it's sound as well.

That just shows you ow often I come to this forum: all my songs are copyrighted. I was not aware that I had posted something about this in 2020. I will continue to copyright thanks again.

Copyright

Excerpt from the site:
If you’re a musician, there are a few key things to know about copyright law and the protections available to you.
First, you should know that copyright protection exists from the moment an original work is “fixed” in a tangible medium. For example, fixation occurs when a song is recorded in an audio file or when a musical work is notated in sheet music or a digital file. You don’t need to do anything else at all for your work to be protected by copyright. As the owner of your work, copyright gives you the right to make and sell copies, distribute those copies, make new works, and publicly perform the work.

I was one of many who had a hand in the drafting of that legislation.

As I have posted earlier, this applies to Unpublished Work only. If there's a problem, not one word of that does you a damned bit of good if you can't prove it to the satisfaction of the Federal Courts. That's why a Registration service exists.

Again, notice that paragraph does not include the right to be paid for your efforts or performances or to sue for monetary damages if your rights are infringed upon. Those rights are only included in Published Works that are properly registered with the LOC (USA) or the proper authority in your country.
