STEELY DAN

A while back, I posted a tune called Dire Straits, which was supposed to sound like...mmmmm. I forgot. Anyway, I now have done one I call Steely Dan. I forget who it is supposed to sound like.

By the way, I have almost run out of space (again!!!) on soundcoud so will soon be making a permanent switch to ReverbNation and www.davidsnydersongs.com.

So the soundcloud link will be here, but the "transition" links will be below.

Hope it makes you smile at least. I am playing piano, bass, and 3 guitars (two rhythms and a lead), but I was inspired by and started with some jazz sounds in the XtraPro styles Pak4, which include additional Real Tracks. They seem to have a really modern, legit sound to them. (* In other words, I studied what the BIAB artists were doing and then proceeded to copy them, or interpret the style myself, as it were. This is another huge learning advantage to BIAB, I think. Listen to people who know what they're doing and study them.)

STEELY DAN

V1

Give me the red pill sugar
To set me free
I may take the blue pill later
So I can sleep
It’s fine all right
If the world lasts one more night
Although New York City is burning
The house party is in sight

CH:

And the girls don’t care what you’re doing
As long as you do it all night long
And the girls will give it all to you
If you play their favorite song
And just
Be man
Keep it up and have a plan
Make it jazzy if you can
If your skin has a deeper tan
play some Steely Dan

V2

Find me some politicians
To treat me nice
Give me some sweet molasses
And banana spice
It’s fine all right
If the world lasts one more night
My house is owned by China
But the party is in sight

CH:

And the girls don’t care what you’re doing
As long as you do it all night long
And the girls will give it all to you
If you play their favorite song
And just
Be man
Keep it up and have a plan
Make it jazzy if you can
If your skin has a deeper tan
play some Steely Dan
The girls are tight
yeah the girls are tight
so be a man
and play some Steely Dan

I like your song, even though I absolutely can't stand Steely Dan.
So, either you are better than them, or you failed to copy their style.
It's your choice grin

It's impressive that the smooth, sophisticated jazz rock slid the smooth metallic object by it's many prudish fans for most of the 70s.
The blue pill and the red Kool Aid make an interesting combination.
Well, David you've made a good stab at their sound...the almost atonal piano interludes are great.
SONG - yes, it works - it sings.
The arrangement is ace.
Enjoyed it!
Not really a fan of the original band - I'll take your take.

Cheers

David,

This totally works for me. In fact, I think your sound is more grounded than SD. You've taken their essence, but completely put your individual stamp on it.

So well done!

David that was really good!

I have so many flashbacks listening to this that I was Reelin' in the Years.

My doc, Doctor Wu, said take two aspirins and call him in the morning.

Love it!

Hi David,

Certainly has a Steely Dan vibe happening in places, groove reminds me of Rikki Don’t Lose That Number somewhat.

Good job on all the instruments, especially enjoyed the tasty lead work.

Enjoyed!

Listened over on ReverbNation, I ditched Soundcloud years ago.

Such great lyrics! The sound is loose and right in the ballpark of that band ( not a fan, but I`ll listen to you in any style).
The musical skill and scope of Mr Snyder is truly impressive!

We never disliked Steely Dan and found a lot of their stuff entertaining - albeit we are not students of classic rock.
While we didn't study them we definitely feel the vibe here. Well done.

For us the lyric is worth the price of admission ... excellent!

And fine performances by you and a tight mix.

Cool,

J&B

Ha!

Sort of like if Donald Fagen suddenly forgot the lyrics and had to made something up. laugh

Nice piano work, too!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

So well done, David. Sounds like a Steely cover, but of one of their very best songs that was lost. The electric piano has Fagen's sound in the chorus. Excellent playing and you lyrics and vocals steel (sic) the show.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Cool and jazzy, another DS/SD song that I cannot listen without smiling...and I haven't taken any pills laugh Steely Dan is a nice band, but after hearing this song, I would rather listen more from David Snyder. Funny party lyrics, Very pleasant instrumentation, the drums have enjoyable 70's groove, the electric piano is full of fun and the sax supports elegantly. The mix and the vocals are top class. Very multi-talented work, there's certainly no genre you couldn't master.

Wow, David. Just wow. One of your best, for me, without a doubt. How do you do it??? That, I do not know, but the end result is nothing short of outstanding. I know nothing about Steely Dan or anything like that, but this song stands on its own. Hats off to you, sir.

Loved this David. That bass sax was excellent. What a cool add to the song. Super vocal and lyric. Cool guitar break. Well done

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
