Part of my work is to compose background music for a corporate video ( mostly talking heads) How do I specify a specific length, say 5 minutes 10 seconds?

I would do that in my DAW. Studio One, in my case. It has a setting for bars, seconds, Samples and frames.

Others here may be able to show you how to do that in BIAB software.

How are you composing the background music?

“Amazing! I’ll be working with Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich, and you’re telling me it’s not that great of a gig?
“Well…” Saint Peter, hesitated, “God’s got this girlfriend who thinks she can sing…”

Usually you have the video to work with. That way you can line up edit points to any changes in the action on the video.

In BB, when you have a song loaded you can see the total run time in the upper right hand corner tool bar. You can then adjust the total measures and the tempo to get the run time you want. Account for the count in and the ending fade but you can get pretty accurate that way. Use time stretch and compression in a DAW to get it precise.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Go to Melody Menu

Click On Generate Soundtrack

Click On Desired Duration

Set Time

It seems to only offer Midi choices.

I loaded in a realtracks song.

The Duration choices didn't seem to work with it; unless you reset the

"Adjust Tempo" button.

Still its a starting point, you could go back to main screen, and change anything you want and still get the right duration for your song.

Spared me the keystrokes to say the same thing.

I made my bones on analog tape. Back then we used a metronome and a stopwatch. My very first digital gear was a stopwatch with a built-in metronome function — not only could I get the track to the exact length but it would generate the downbeats on a different pitch. I was in heaven. My tape machines striped one track to SMPTE time code, a trick I learned at AMPEX where my dad worked and I had interned.
