I might as well ask this here..... maybe someone knows the answer.

I used Sonar X1 32 bit on XP pro32 before I upgraded my system hardware to W-10 64 and loaded Cakewalk by BAndlab.

So I'm on 64 bits. I want to use some of the older legacy synths such as Cakewalk Sound Center because I have a lot of sound packs for it and it sounds pretty good.

I loaded X1 to the new machine and it loaded and runs.

When I scanned for plugs in CWBL, the legacy stuff was found (some of it). I loaded CSC and then loaded a concert grand piano. It sounded like crap. All distorted. So I checked a couple of other sounds and got the same thing. It's not usable at this point in CWBL.

However, I can open it in X1 and it plays crystal with almost no perceptible latency.

In CWBL it shows as VST2 32 bit in my "Insert Synth" drop down. So I'm thinking the distortion has something to do with the 64/32 bit thing.

Interestingly, I can use some of the other 32 bit plugs and they appear to run smoothly. FX plugs and such.

Obviously, I could work in the 64bit CW and export a mix as wav, then import that into the 32 bit X1 and effectively use the CSC in that manner, get the tracks into WAV and send them back to CWBL for final mix..... a bit inconvenient, but doable. Ideally, I'd like to figure out the issue and effect an all in one solution.

EDIT: In preferrences..... audio settings driver mode..... I set it to the safe side. It plays fairly clean but with some crackle. And latency is more noticeable but not prohibitive. AND... in MIDI, the only driver option is MME which I believe is the root of the issue. I'm asking this in the CW forum as well since this is specific to CW.

Maybe right-click the icon, choose properties and try having it run in Compatibility mode.
Sometimes this can make 32 bit stuff run better on 64 bit systems (?)

In the past I used to run jBridge to get 32bit plug-ins to work in a 64bit system:

https://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/

I used it in Sonar and Studio One Pro. It worked most of the time but on occasion a plug-in would not function properly when bridged. It may be worth a try.

Now I'm all 64 bit.

good advice.... but I think CWBL has a built in compatability app like J-bridge. Most of the other things run and if I switch to safe mode, it works fine but then the latency is horrid. If I freeze it.... it runs perfectly smooth.

Just another day in the studio..... and all because I have started using synths in the work process.... old synths....

I do have a work around as a last resort.

Herb, you're right, Cakewalk does have a built-in bit bridge but I'd still follow Mario's suggestion and try J-Bridge. Bit bridges are like screwdrivers, sometimes one won't fit the head of a screw while another fits perfectly. It doesn't hurt to give it a try.

I've got J-bridge. I just need to figure out which computer it's on and transfer it to the new machine. Might do that later today and see if it makes a difference.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
