You Just Way Too Sweet

I have revised this song using almost every suggestion offered.

Thank all of you - those suggestions were extremely helpful.

I dropped the horns a bit in the verses to give the vocals more room. I dropped them a little bit less on the choruses. I gave the piano a little more beef in its solo. I also, per Floyd's suggestion, added a hefty dose of slap-back delay to the vocal. Also, I lowered the middle-mid EQ and lower-low-end EQ on the vocal. In addition, I brought the vocal track a little more forward. Too much? Let me know what you think! Thanks!!!

This is just a WIP at this point. It's pretty much a throw-away lyric. And, my vocal is simply a placeholder for someone who can sing this genre as it should be sung. That said, this one is more about the instrumentation/beat than the singer or lyric - not that they should be ignored, by any means. A good singer would definitely improve the overall presentation. But the band is the main focus. Any helpful comments/suggestions are welcome.

24 Bar Intro

(v1)
Bees staying busy making that honey all through the day
And birds are a singing their songs while the people all sway
But they can’t do it sweeter than you, there just ain’t no way

CHORUS
The first time I met you, you swept me right off my feet
I knew at first glance you were the one that I’d wanna keep
I couldn’t help myself cuz baby you just way too sweet

(v2)
Those birds and bees gave up cuz they know that it’s true
They just can’t conjure their sweetness half as good as you do
Although they try their best, they just don’t compare to you

Chorus
The first time I met you, you swept me right off my feet
I knew at first glance you were the one that I’d wanna keep
I couldn’t help myself cuz baby you just way too sweet

Alan,

This was a great song to begin with. Now it sounds tremendous!

Wow, it sounds like late 1940s big band meets Rocket 88.

LOVED IT!

Thanks, Bob. You're just way too, uh ... nice! loved the Rocket 88 reference ... that was way too cool!

I'm delighted you liked it. And thanks for the feedback. It's always nice to know the extra work made some improvements. My vocals have always been pretty iffy the past 15 years or so - had an accident that compromised one of my vocal cords. I used to have a mid-to-high baritone voice. I have copies of about 25 or 30 songs I sang before the accident. They actually sound pretty decent. Can't post them here because they're all cover songs.

Anyway ... thanks so much for the kind feedback!

Take care ...

Alan

Hi Al.
I didn't hear the original but you got a handle on this one.
Is that slap back I hear? Maybe a tad too much as I noticed it more in the first verse.

Good and bouncy.

That's a pretty hot band!

The singer's not too bad, either. smile

Hi Vic ...

Thanks for the listen and your thoughts. I appreciate it. And yes, that is slap-back delay. Maybe it's a bit too much, but Floyd suggested I "drown it in slap-back delay" - so I did! Glad you liked it otherwise. Appreciate you letting me know. best to you ...

Thanks, Floyd. I'm delighted to hear you thought it was better. I've never been a producer, mixer, etc. - just a guitar player who made a good living off those six strings. I have no technical skills in those areas - just what my ear tells me.

Thanks again. Your suggestions and support always make my music better.

Thanks a bunch, David. Yeah, I was real happy with the way the band performed. The singer, though, could use a little help. Glad you liked it - thanks!

I thought for sure I'd commented on the song, maybe I pressed the wrong button or something.

But anyway I really love this. Great piece of work! A great old school rockin' feel.

And I love that photograph! That is a classic.

Hi David ...

You did comment, but it was on the original version. This is the updated effort.

Thanks a bunch for the really nice comments. I do appreciate them!

And yeah, she's a camera's best friend! She's almost 77 and still sizzles!

Glad you liked it. And thanks for letting me know.

We’re late to the party so we just listened to this update and it is definitely a winner!

We bet the lyric gave Di a big smile and your performance is very good. Love the band and it makes us want to “move” as Elvis would say. wink

And, hey, with the Merritts a shuffle is always right in the wheelhouse! smile

We also loved the beautiful photo of Di.

Enjoyed it!

Alan, consider this one finished.

Great vocal with that slap back Gene Vincent type echo.
The band in much improved.
The mix was spot on.

Loved it.

Hello Alan,

What a swinging song!
In my mind I saw a big band in a semi-dark, smoky saloon with you in white pants and a red jacket behind the microphone making everyone mad there.
I think that slap back delay accentuate that image. You could think it is a bit to much, but not here!
And what nice lyrics you made. Everyone must fall in love hearing this...

I enjoyed it a lot, my feet were twisting (still are).

Have a lovely day,
Hans

No problem with a late arrival - we saved some cake and ice cream for you. It's over there on the table at the back of the room.

I tell Di every day how sweet and wonderful she is, but loved hearing in song! And yeah, it's pretty hard to not like anything shuffle. That's one of my favorite photos of Di. She's always been beautiful!

Thanks again! Take care.

Hi Mario ...

Ah ... I haven't thought of Gene Vincent in years. But you're right about that. I also heard it on several Carl Perkins songs. When I revisit this in a couple of weeks, I'm gonna cut back the slap back just a smidgeon. Gonna give it a layered opening and give it a small (maybe 4 bars) spot that's not nearly as busy as the rest.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!!!

Alan
